Is it just me, the recipe, or is there a hick-up with SE? I have the toughest time achieving success with this Brimstone recipe. My Goldsmith is now rank 29 and it is still failing most of the time. Even though I gave up on the recipe, I'm still curious to know about it.
I can confirm that 4 Phyrite only give 1 Brimstone, (after December update), just made 14 synt attemts at r18 GS with Guild support, Failed 2 times, so endet up with 12 Brimstone, at the cost of 56 Phyrite and 14 fire crys, my advise, Vendor the dam Pyrite and try for HQ with yellow copper, i promice at R18-20 GS, u will get 12 Brimstone faster and cheaper that way!!!
Just snythed 4x Pyrite to 1xBrimstone using R12 tool at GSM15. Difficult synth so 20 seems right. I can confirm it produces only a single Brimstone (although this seems like a bug to me).
I was able to complete this synthesis with a 4/9 success rate as a rank 14 Goldsmith with a few pieces of crafting gear, a rank 7 tool (main hand), and Master's Gemmary support in Ul'dah.
I would estimate this to be a rank 12 or 13 synthesis given the difficulty.
On the Lodestone, it lists the pyrite x4 recipe as only resulting in 1 (one) brimstone per synth, as opposed to getting 8. I have not tested this myself to see which is correct.

Updated. We'll go with the Lodestone recipes until someone can prove otherwise.
Cannot find it in shops since the update that changed the NPC prices and items etc... Need at least level 9 Goldsmithing to try, also need the Guild level Facility's for the process. I tried it a few times at 9 Failing horribly each time so you might need at least 15 in Goldsmithing to make it with a decent Success rate ~maybe don't quote me on it >.>~
