An Ear for Quality

Armorer/Blacksmith

Class Storyline

After reaching Rank 20 Armorer or Blacksmith, speak to Bodenolf to start this quest. You must have reached a certain point in Fade to White in order to get the quest.

Contents [hide]

Preparation

You should come to this quest prepared, or you'll have to spend your gil on ore. If you plan to smelt all of your own you will need at least:

  • 12-20 copper ore

But if you planing on already having the ingredients ready you will need:

  • 2 copper plate
  • 1 copper rivets
  • 3 copper squares

These nuggets will craft what is necessary, which is two things. One requires one Bronze Ingot & two nuggets, the other requires 3 bronze nuggets.

Starting The Quest

To start this quest you must go speak to Bodenolf who is behind the counter in the Blacksmithing Guild.

Once you talk to him and choose 'An Ear for Quality' you'll instantly be instanced, so I hope you prepared like was recommended in the above section. I never tested to see the boundaries of this, but i'm sure if you want to leave the instance you can just run down the bridge leading back to the Adv Guild. Note: The armorers are close enough that they don't boot you out of instance.

Objective #1

The first objective when being talking to him for the first time will be to seek out an elderly Lalafell who has a tendency to never look you directly in the eye (I encourage you to watch your characters facial expression in the midst of all of this). This Lalafell should be standing remotely close where Smydhaemr stands when not instanced. Refer to this image for a rough positioning of the elderly Lalafell. Click Here

After speaking with this elderly Lalafell he will tell you to he wants you to prove your worth by crafting something for him. He wants you to craft a Naldiq Gramophone. He will tell you that this requires two copper plate and one copper rivets. If you prepared yourself like was mentioned above, you should just hop right into synth stance and start crafting! Note: The second you get down into synth stance/mode, hit 'requested items' then under the dropdown hit 'quests' then click on 'An Ear For Quality'. This should put nothing there, and you go ahead and add your materials and craft the Gramophone. But know that if you hadn't done that, the recipe itself wouldn't be there, you would only see the Birdsbeak Hammer head and the Bronze Pickaxe Head recipes. If you see only these recipes it means you failed to hit requested items and follow the instructions.

This item for me was very easy to craft. Even after the rapid nerf was very simple to just rapid it.

If you have no items for the craft, you can either speak to Smyd. or Joellaut and one of them will provide the proper materials for the craft.

Objective #2

After you have succeeded in crafting this for the elderly Lalafell, bring it back to him. He will seem astonished, and ask you to make him one more thing to prove you're more than just a one trick pony. A Nalqiq Trembler. This time, however, he will not give you the recipe and you must find it yourself! Luckily he tells you that one of the forge hands around the forge have some useful information. And sure enough, they do.

Run down the stairs, past Smyd, and talk to the NPC named Trinne. She will give you the recipe (In text on the screen). Be sure to read it. She says you need three copper squares for the Vymelli Trembler but she cannot provide the nuggets. Lucky for you, you planned ahead and already have them.

If you have no items for the craft, you can either speak to Smyd. or Joellaut and one of them will provide the proper materials for the craft.

Now just do what you did in the previous objective by going through Requested Items again. This synth (atleast for me) was a bit trickier. I didn't need facilities, but if you do, you can always go back and talk to Smyd and I think he will offer them.

Once you have completed this Trembler, bring it back to the elderly Lalafell and a cutscene will arise. He will explain why he always moves his head, and for some reason an array of attractive women walk in and whisper sweet nothings into his ear. Just watch this cinematic and you have completed the Quest!

In Closing

This quest gave me a huge headache, but in the end with a reward of 20,000 Gil, 2,000 Guild Marks (Which are traded in behind the counter to Qhas Chalahko), this quest is definitely worth doing. The only problem was finding it, or figuring out you had to hit requested items.

Hope I helped someone. I NEVER found this quest described anywhere so as far as I know I am the only one to write a guide and I will repost this to as many wiki's or informative sites as I possibly can to get the word out about this quest and the confusion.

Thank you, Soi Fon, Besaid Hand and Land (Crafting LS)

Journal Entries

After convincing Bodenolf to accept you into his guild, he suggested that you speak with veteran forgehand Mimidoa and have him instruct you on the basics of metallurgy.

A queer conversation with the tiny forgehand leads to Mimidoa asking you to create him using two and . Procure the ingredients and follow the recipe provided to test your mettle.

After judging your work on the gramophone case, Mimidoa has given you a second task─this time to create him a more difficult piece. Speak to the other forgehands to receive the recipe. Inquire with Joellaut at the guildshoppe should you require materials.

You have successfully created the item requested by Mimidoa and handed it over for inspection. After judging your handiwork, he presents you with another task. Once you have completed crafting this new item, speak with Mimidoa again for a final evaluation.

Thanks much. My recipe was for copper also, but your walk through saved what remains of my tenuous grip on sanity! Thanks! xoxo

If you do this on one Class, you can't do it on the other? I did it on Blacksmith, but when I try to start it on Armorer nothing happens.

I believe the required items are random but all can be bought from the vendors within the instance area.
As a R20 armorer, I needed:
1) Copper Plate x 2 + Copper Rivet x 1
2) Bronze Wire x 2

I don't think this unlocks the marks on levequests, as I am blacksmith rank 20 and already earning marks on levequests rank 20+ and I have not done this quest yet.

Another note, Trinne holds the second recipe for the armorsmith quest.

Just a note, I did this a moment ago and for my first item task the recipe called for 2 copper plates and a handful of copper rivets, so it seems sometimes the recipes will differ.

Please disregard my previous npost as when I try to Edit it the page comes up to Edit the original post from Aveline.

The first Synthesis for Armourer quest does indeed take 2 Copper Plates + 1 Copper Rivet.

The Second Synthesis for Armourer quest takes 3 Copper Squares.

Just a heads up by the way, although the quest items do not require any Crystals if you intend to synth the mats yourself then you will still need those Crystals.

These recepies are for Blacksmith, Armorer have different ones. First needs 2 Copper Square and 1 Copper rivet.

Second I'm trying at the moment and seem to need at least 3 Copper Square (info from Trinne).

This may have been written based on Blacksmith quest. It seems Armorer and Blacksmith share this as the Rank 20 class quest. The items mentioned above are the ones required when I did this just a few minutes ago as Blacksmith.
