Speak to Hereward and get the quest from him.
Go back inside the guild and speak to the 3 NPCs, Upstanding Adventurer, Mischievous Adventurer and Elderly Adventurer.
After that you will see CS with Agile Adventurer and your Master Lalatta.
Head to Lifemend Stump (23,27) outside Gridania.
Upon Arrival you will trigger CS.
Go back to Gridania and head to your Guild.
once you are there, head inside the guild and you will enter instance.
Speak to Upstanding Adventurer, Mischievous Adventurer and Elderly Adventurer.
Now you have to play Parley against Mischievous Adventurer, and then speak to him again.
Speak to Beli.
Speak to Maddeline and she will ask you to craft 5 Toadskin Hunting Belt.
You need x Toad Leather 1x Aldgoat Leather and 1x Steel Ingot per Belt. (5x Toad Leather - 5x Aldgoat Leather - 5x Steel Ingot Total, OR buy it from Markets)
Speak to Maddeline again when you finish crafting all 5 Jackets.
Craft 1x Boar Leather. (OR buy it from Markets) *NB This used to be buffalo leather and marmot fur!
Start Synthesize then click on Requested Items then select the quest name from the list and click on Begin.
Add both items to the materials and start repairing the Vintage Fen-Yll Boots.
Speak to Hereward and you will start CS.
Speak to Lalatta and click on Yes.
Speak to Hereward to finish the quest and receive your reward.

i am getting the same thing the quest freezes and i cant proceed. can't even hit the esc bottom.
Same, quest freezes when I talk to the npc and it says I dont meet the requirements when I access the quest through the synth menu

5 Leather Satchel Belts
Also of note, the recipe provided in the Journal states that Brass Rivets are needed but they are not. I suspect this recipe was changed when they did the whole simplification patch but the text of the quest log was never updated to reflect that.

Be warned about this >< Based on the previous posts I synth'd the 5 leather armguards (black) in Ul Dah prior to starting this quest. It wasn't cheap either, as I don't have much for leather supplies, this being a secondary class for me. Anyways, the quest item that Madelline requested of me is 5 pairs of leather jackboots. So back to Ul Dah for take two of this expensive quest. TBH, I'm not sure if the item requested is somewhat random, or if SE has changed the quest, but I strongly suggest you open the quest and get to this stage of the quest before you go to the expense and possible inconvenience of synthing the wrong item ><

Items you will need to make or buy to complete this quest.
5 Leather Armguards (Black)
1 Buffalo Leather
1 Marmot Fur
Go to the clearing where from the main story line where you meet the moogles who can repair items. Upon reaching there, you find out from another student that the items are all gone... someone took them all. You then need to head back to the LW guild to find out whats going on. By walking to the back part places you in another instance. Talk to all the npc there. After that talk to Hereward out in the main lobby. He suggest that you parley with the fellow student who took the items. (This was the frustrating part for me here). I talked to all the npc again and again but the option to parley never showed up in my menu. The student you need to parley with is the Mischievous Taru. Keep clicking on him until the option to parley comes up. Beat him to get the key item.
After you win it removes ya from the instance. Once again talk to Hereward. He suggest talking to people in the guild to find out on how to repair the boots. You only need to talk to one npc (Maddeline, she's near the door to the back of the guild). As a test she ask's that you create 5 Leather Armguards (Black) and come back when you are done. When u have the 5 made, talk to her again and she will give you the recipe you need and the missing info on the ingredients to repair the boots (1 buffalo leather and 1 marmot fur). One you have all that done, repair the boots and talk to Hereward.
After talking with him you are put into an instance again talk to Lalatta and use Echo, once that is done go back and talk with Hereward and complete the quest.

Not sure if it has always been this way or perhaps a change with the resent patch, but for my version of this quest the npc wanted leather armguards (black). Was pretty bummed seeing as i had collected the mats for the above listed synth.
With doing a lot of research online for info on this quest, gonna add a brief walk through to help those when they reach this point.
Items you will need to make or buy to complete this quest.
5 Leather Tool Belts (Red)
1 Buffalo Leather

Quest doesn't work. It has you create leather tool belt (red) but the recipe seems broken. Put in all the materials the quest asks for and I get the message 'you can't craft anything with these materials'. The iron rivet or nails probably got changed with something else like brass or copper.
