Basic layout of map file lines are:
Lines:
L -X0, -Y0, Z0, -X1, -Y1, Z1, R, G, B
where, -X0 is starting X position reversed sign from in-game E/W direction (2nd number in in-game /loc), -Y0 is starting Y position reversed sign from in-game N/S direction (1st number in the in-game /loc), and Z0 is starting elevation (same as 3rd number in in-game /loc), X1, Y1, Z1, are similar but the ending positions, R, G, B are the 0-255 color values for the line.

Labels are:
P -X, -Y, Z, R, G, B, S, Text
where, X, Y, and Z are similar to X0, Y0, and Z0 above; R, G, B same as above, S is size of text from 1-3, and Text is the label

As an example, say some website gives the in-game location of an NPC named John Doe as +155, -411, +15, then to add a Large Dark Blue Label of his name, you'd put the following line in the appropriate map file:
P 411, -155, 15, 0, 0, 128, 3, John_Doe

Note how, the first sets of in-game nubmers get swapped, and their signs get reversed in the map file.

That's the basics, and all that most files have.

Yeah, I hate how they reverse the map coordinations. To THIS day I have trouble using /loc to get somewhere based off the coordinates. I wish every zone had 0,0,0 in the bottom left corner and every coordinate was positive. Would make moving around to a specific /loc so much more intuitive!

I got here and necro'd this post because I was still looking for a good guide to explain how to modify the height numbers when in a dungeon to avoid those maps with all the lines from different levels overlayed over each other. I've been playing this darn game since 1999 and still have trouble with that concept! I guess nobody's going to hire me to do any mapmaking in a New World!

I've never really discovered the right combination of button options and filter settings to get multilevel dungeon maps to behave the way I want them to. Zoom in, zoom out, click this toggle, switch that switch. Change line colors. Drop stuff in Mappie. Fiddling with the cartography tools and spamming /loc usually got me lost and then more lost. I'm thinking of Kaesora? However it's spelled. And the botched x/y axis stuff is maddeningly counterintuitive.

I just did a internet keyword search and one of the top results has something like this; "I can't understand how people don't know how to use coordinates." That's from 2004ish. And I'm reading that -and thinking- how unhelpfuly snotty people can be - considering the person who typed that insulting remark was supposedly leading a "help" comment thread.
