I remember that :) but the thing is that it stopped working at one point... was very useful.

There is an MP3 player for EQ? /mp3

To buy most of your spells, it took a lot of work and running around? Now with the recent patch, most/all of them are available in PoK (All the way up to 85)

There is a clickie throwing weapon that Paladins can use?

Not to mention the quest spells. I remember doing the temp quest for my cleric. I had the worst luck getting the drop off the boats in dulak, took about 10 hours total of farming.

Thanks be to John Capozzi (aka "Kendrick"). One of the reasons he's easily one of my favorite MMO designers of all time (add Chardok revamp, Velketor's Labyrinth revamp, Ring of Fire in Acrylia Caverns and ring events in general in EQ as well since those were all his doing)

Here's my entry and it's recent.

Did you know....the difference between permanent and reusable cosmetic augs in the marketplace? Generally speaking, the reusable ones are slightly more expensive than the permanent ones (for example, a bow aug that costs 300 is permanent and the aug is destroyed when you use it. A bow aug that costs 400 can be reused and only requires the cheapest aug distiller (Class I) to remove it). Read the descriptions ('Inspect') and you'll see.

Did you know...the racial xp bonus that halflings enjoy was not intended for them? It was intended for HUMANS due to their inherent disabilities (lack of night vision being chief among them). But due to how the database was sorted, the xp bonus property wound up assigned to halflings (due to alphabetizing or something). After all the code and such was done for the game, the mistake was realized but at that point, it would've been too time consuming/costly to change it so they left it alone. (I forget the source but this was explained at the Fan Faire in Baltimore an age ago)

I posted this in another did you know thread years ago (my other account which I forgot, then found after I made this one...ugh). If you back yourself into a corner good and start casting a long cast spell you can run forward, left, right, run circles...doesn't matter as long as you go back to the spot where you started casting and you won't be interrupted.

I'm pretty sure Oakwynd came out during Kunark or Velious era, not classic. One of the rewards related to one of the storyline events. If you look at the item entry here, there aren't any comments about it until 2003.

Did you there once was a dragon in Lake Rathe?

It's OK if you don't since there never was one. Rumor had it that one was intended to be spawning there but the developers couldn't work out the mechanics in time so they just scrapped the dragon.

In one of my old guilds there was a female cleric who was terrified of mobs in water, especially dragons, so whenever as a group or raid force we had to swim thru water, or even just cross a stream, inevitably somebody would warn her in general chat to watch out for that particular body of water's local dragon---even water like the streams in Crushbone!

After Kunark went live we had her convinced that Sebilis frogs could randomly loot one equipped item from any player they killed so in Seb she always kept her epic water sprinkler bagged.

Yeah, that was mean but all meant in good fun! ;)

Did you know many years ago a clever guy wrote a utility program which allowed you to explore zones risk-free? It's called EQ Zone Viewer. I do believe it was/is legal because it would just use the info in the zone files on your own computer and build a 3-d representation inside of his own interface which you could explore without being in-game or even on-line.

The zones came with no mobs, no PCs and no interactive items like doors, ground spawns, etc.

It was great for exploring and learning zones. A blast to wander around Plane of Fear, Plane of Hate, Sebilis and other dangerous zones enjoying the design and learning the layout at no risk. Since I was the guild's lead puller at times it helped me an awful lot with new raid zones.

I believe at some point EQ changed the structure of their zone files and the original developer of EQ Zone Viewer had moved on so nobody was around to update the viewer. Too bad since 100s of new zones have been released since and many would be fun to wander thru just to gaze around.

EQ Zone Explorer (the actual name, but you were very close Sippin Smiley: smile) used the old Tutorial engine and when that was changed and removed is when EQZE quit working. From what remember back then, even though it was legal, Sony or maybe it was just the general population frowned upon it's use, claiming an unfair advantage.

EQIM (EQ Instant Messenger) was the old out-of-game chat program that was mentioned earlier and it quit working when Sony made a change to U-chat and cross-server tells to remove the workings of link bots (send a x-server tell with an item name or partial and receive a reply of matching items in the link format). You could log in with the same account as someone else who was in-game and it would work. The only problem with that is the in-game person would often lose all non-standard channels, same as if U-chat had went down.

There was a big problem with getting stuck everywhere when they switched to DirectX 8. Due to this problem not being fixed right away, is when they implemented the /rewind command. It took several months for stuck problem to get mostly fixed.

There was a directional graphics bug that was very annoying (screen would lose all terrain and objects, and only show the sky background when facing certain direction(s)). It took a long time to get fixed (over a year as I remember). Along a similar line, the Mechanical Guardian in DsH was invisible to those not using Pixel Shader 2.0 or higher when SoF first came out. Thankfully target rings still showed up when having it targetted, so you could at least have a general idea where it was at.

When I first started reading Sippin's post about a Dragon in Lake Rathe, I was thinking of the one time Dragon in Lake of Ill Omen (or was it Swamp of No Hope). I don't remember exactly as I didn't get to see it, or even know about it, until it was over. I think I was on a break then, plus if I was even guilded, it wasn't a progressive guild, but one several expansions behind the current expansion.

That's enough for now.

People actually used to do PuRs? (Pick up Raids) - while generally not the most successful, it was fun to group with people you didn't know and kill a raid mob for flagging.

You can use the bankers in cities that you're KoS in? It was a change made to the game since people killed bankers, they were made to no longer be killed.

At one point you used to be able to kill the Guild Masters everywhere? Used to be a lot of people would accidently attack them, or even raid cities and kill the GMs (Guard Treitan in North Qeynos can still be killed... as long as Kane Bayle isn't up in his place...) Was always a jolly good time accidentally attacking one of them.

It was Swamp of No Hope, in one of the tunnels to Trak's Teeth. Disease based DD/DoT AE. Mob's name was Ithiasor the Fallen. Dropped crap loot, even for that time. The one time I remember doing him, he dropped one piece of loot: a beastlord belt. We never did him again.

Stolen from someone who stole it from someone:

If you visit the lakeshore in the West Commonlands, you can find a lonely man skipping stones. His name - Skippyn Stoneshear. ("Skipping Stones Here")

In the Qeynos Hill area, you’ll find Guards Regis and Philbin – a reference to Regis Philbin, the popular American TV talkshow/gameshow host.

In Kithicor Forest, watch for three tigers by the names of Reggit, Eenot, and Hobbes. These look to be plays on three famous tigers: Tigger (from Winnie-The-Pooh), Tony (the Frosted Flakes Tiger), and Hobbes (from the comic strip ‘Calvin and Hobbes’).

In South Karana, there’s a Bard at the fountain named Vhalen which is interpreted by many as an abbreviation for Van Halen, the famous rock and roll band. If you talk to Vhalen, you’ll find he has some interesting things to say about another Bard named "Metala". A reference, perhaps, to a rivalry between Van Halen and the band Metallica?
Staying with the Metallica theme, there are two Barbarians in West Karanas named Lars and Ulrich. Lars Ulrich is the drummer for the Metallica!

In Steamfront, watch out for Feddi Dooger - which is believed to be a reference to horror-film villain, Freddy Krueger, from ‘Nightmare of Elm Street’ fame.

In Freeport you’ll find a Bard Merchant named Jekel Enheid. Get it? "Dr. Jekell and Mr. Hyde"!

In Steamfont, look for a pretty little spider named Charlotte, from the book ‘Charlotte's Web.’

Underneath Qeynos there’s a Gelatinous Cube named Cubert – an obvious reference to the 1980’s era arcade game called Q-Bert!

In the Highkeep music room, you can find two Guards named Chopin and Bach.

At Lake Rathetear you can find Prince Kyrmt Keroppi - a frogluk. So… here we have an interesting mélange of the fairy tale Frog Prince, ‘Kermit the Frog’, and ‘Hello Kitty's’ frog friend Keroppi. What a triple play!

In Kedge Keep there’s a reference to Shakespeare’s MacBeth - two sharks that go by the names of "Cauldronboil" and "Cauldronbubble".

When I first started in '99 and for several years afterwards, when it rained in game the clip plane was reduced to effecively 5% by mist. It was so easy to run into mobs and get killed. With no in game map, a barely working compass, and no view of the horizon, you would always find yourself lost and totally clueless where you were. I would often sit the rain out, hiding, or even camp out and come back in 15 minutes.

Later, I was able to find Meteorological Rockets made by tinkers, but by then SOE was already toning down rain effects and they were barely needed anymore. I do still carry one - partly for nostalgia.

Actually Yther, Sippin is remembering right.

I also used to have EQ Zone Viewer, and used it to learn how to get through Siren's Grotto and Chardok. This was while I was working on my 1.5 epic (OoW) on my ranger, so I know for sure it was before the tutorial.

Maybe the original developer quit the original project and someone else picked it up and updated it to use the tutorial engine, and changed the name a little bit? I don't know. What I do know, though, is that this kind of program is no longer around. =-(

EZE.exe = EQ Zone Explorer. I wasn't aware of anything that worked past the Tutorial change (Not long after PoP, definitely prior to OoW).

Maybe someone expanded on it to make the Zone Viewer (and probably did since EZE came with source code, by including the original Tutorial.exe probably renamed to something else to avoid the Patcher deleting it). Because they sound very similar; No server side anything (doors, mobs, etc.). Although EZE included the 3 or 4 Tutorial mobs, if the zone allowed a space for them (always the same coordinates).

It's hard to say for sure, as there used to be tons of apps directed at EQ. Looking through an old cd circa 2001-2, I found at least a dozen apps. I miss one of them alot; EQ Server Check, which gave continuous updates on server status, and even population.

EDIT: Different spellings, reminded me of Gods names are mostly re-arrangements of letters for real words, like Tunare for nature, E`ci for ice, etc. I don't remember the others atm, but most others are re-arrangements or deformations of words, like the earlier post about NPC names. Speaking of NPC names, there's a Bryan in East Karana and a Bryan McGee in Highpass Hold, and I was disappointed to find an Ytheri Coldtouch in Nektulos in EQ2. There's some more common names in EQ, but I don't remember any other than several Johns in The Buried Sea.

I leveled to 50 on guards and Bards.

The main reason guards and Bards were so popular was because they could be single pulled thus soloed. All "regular" places to level to 50 like Sol B and Lower Guk were suicide if you tried to solo.

The Antonican Bard NPCs that were quite popular "non-monsters" to kill for XP for soloers include the cleverly named Vhalen Nostrolo in South Karana.

I used to level on guards as well. Easy to quad-kite dorf guards in Butcherblock Mountains. Always felt bad about it since halflings shouldn't be on bad terms with dorfs. But I'd rationalize it that there were no evil guards of appropriate level to earn XP nor placed appropriately for quadding. Druids get quad spells so gotta use them... right? :)

Using EQ Zone Viewer, whatever the name, was indeed a god-send for learning zones like Kedge. It was hard enough to convince a group to go INTO Kedge to kill the druid epic tainted mob. But the chances were NIL if you couldn't lead them to the spot confidently and safely. Remember those were the days that if you died deep inside a zone like Kedge you were in for a whole lot of hurting, inconvenience and loss of time trying to recover your corpse and gear.

But let's not derail this thread!

Did you know that Veksar was originally supposed to be added with the Kunark expansion? Evidently the developers had so much trouble putting this zone together they set it aside and did not activate it with Kunark. It didn't go "live" till years later and IIRC correctly it went live all by itself as part of a game patch, not as part of a future expansion.

BTW, people still do "pick up raids" on some servers, which is a great thing. Have to give kudos to anyone who's got the drive, motivation and leadership skill to run a raid of random players, for sure!

EZE was pretty short lived. EQ zone viewer definitely existed, definitely STILL exists and actually still works.

http://www.eqclassic.de/wiki/EverQuest_Zone_Viewer

It dont have all the zones but it still works. It dont put you in the game like EZE did but it will still give you the same idea.

For those that dont know EZE worked off the tutorial which was a single player back then and just substituted the tut for other zones. It put you in the offline tutorial so you where actually "in the game" just not connected to live, the zone just wasnt populated by mobs or players. EQ zone viewer is a standalone program that lets you view zones by reading the zone files.

EDIT: Just found out you can manually load a zone through EQ Zone Viewer so it should work with all zones.

EDIT 2: The old tutorial zone is still there in the EQ folder!!

For a while after the release of Kunark, there was a froglok cycle in The Swamp of No Hope that the "named" would drop a diamond as his loot. It doesn't mean much today, but when you had a level 15'ish mob dropping a gem worth 180pp, it was huge back then. I made a small fortune (by Kunark standards) on that with my druid.

At one of the expansion releases, I think it iwas Kunark, forage got messed up. If your forage was high enough to forage the "rares" from the zone, the loot table was messed up and you have a chance to loot something from a person's inventory that was also in the zone.

Mobs have a finite amount of mana. Back in Kunark it was common for a bard to kite and mana drain Gorenaire while the rest of the raid go ready. Gorenaire was a wuss wihtout mana.

Mobs that could debuff used to dispell the first X buffs that you had on you. It was very common to have some clickies that you could quickly reclaim those spots so you didn't lose the important buffs later on.

At least through Velious, there wasn't a raid feature or raid channel. In the Temple of Veeshan, it was common for one raid to use /shout and nother raid to use /ooc. You could turn off the other channel so you don't get their spam. Old raids were a collection of groups. You wanted to be in the KS group. This group would routinely get a bulk of the kills on a raid and could actually make experience.

The loot lock-out on mobs was because of loot stealers. On old raids, anyone could come up and loot the mob immediately. In the open zones, it was common to have a lurker that would try to steal the loot. The raid would normally have someone stay in looting mode on the corpse to "lock it out" from the lurkers.

Kunark introduced several "one-way" dungeons. These tended to have a cliff drop off to prevent you from leaving easily. As a melee, you hoped there was a teleporter in your group or you had to run out of the dungeon the long way.

Kunark also started the trend of having long areas before the zone line. In the original EQ, people would routinely camp right at the zone line so you knew safety was a step or two away. Kunark (except Karnor's) put the mobs far away from the actual zone line so camping right there wasn't as feasible.

Gates of Discord was originally tuned for a level increase to 70, but it never was implemented. GoD is commonly considered the downfall of EQ. It didn't help that WoW was released at the same time. Players that sought refuge elsewhere since GoD was hard finally had a decent game to keep their attention. As an end game raider, I really enjoyed the difficulty. It was about the only time in EQ that people from competing guilds would group together to knock out the various tasks.

At one point (if given consent), you could loot someone else's corpse. On a corpse recovery, it was common for someone to allow someone to take all of their coin as payment but leave all of the items.

When Fay-mart and the EC tunnel were the trading hotspots, you gain a great reputation as someone that would honorable enough to hold loot transfers without taking anything. My warrior had that reputation. Word of mouth spread too because I would get random tells from people asking if I could hold stuff. People would give up serious coin as payment. Heck, I just liked drooling over all of the cool stuff that I knew I would never see (at that point).

Following zone walls was how many people travelled across many of the open zones in the original, Kunark. and Velious. Mobs didn't path that high, and you'd eventually find the zone line.
