Yesterday, I started a Female Drakkin Paladin. I moderately twinked it with Sinew Wrapped Owlbear Ribcage and Jeldorin among other items. When I logged out, I noticed that the ribcage gave a chain look to the char that was awesome. It got me to thinking of an old friend from my early years in EQ. He constantly tried to keep his Druid looking like he was in plate armor. It was an interesting approach to armor.

I kind of doubt I will try the same as Defiant gear is just too good to forgo unless it is for a specific leveling experience. Has anyone else done this armor look technique with a char?

Dark Elf Cloth Robe Ornament can be inserted into leather armor. It's a nice offbeat look for a druid! So I'm looking to acquire one. Only thing is it sells for like 300-500k on FV so I'm going need to pharm me some dark elf mobs in Neriak Fourth Gate until I get lucky.

This was a big deal before armor dye and stats max/min overtook the roleplayish aspects of the game.

Plane of Sky armor is the gold plate look.

Gnome skin armor from Tower of Frozen Shadow was the stealthy black ninja look.

There's the odd melee useable robe...

Some of the original cultural armors had "odd" looks. For example the dark elf caster stuff was chain (just like some of the casters in Najena).

Original model iksar helms were insane compared to the Luclin models... and so on.

Pretty sure there's old threads and/or some wiki bits about getting the "alternate" looks.

There is newer instances of this too, Blackfeather Roost has a silk shirt that isn't a robe for casters.

One of my first "main" characters way back when was a human female cleric. Someone gave me a Burynai Legion Gi and I wore that thing forever and hated having to take it off and lose my robe graphic. Thing was ugly as sin, too but it was a robe, damn it!

They should introduce a new tradeskill option to convert old gear into a Type 20 augmentation. Now THAT would fire up the market for player-made items and encourage people to develop their tailoring---or whatever---skill to make such items. I'd say it would never happen because it would impede Sony's ability to sell ornamentations thru the Marketplace BUT Type 20 augments require a cash upgrade to your account to make use of them so they could see this program mod as a potential income generator for Sony.

Flowing Black Robes used to be all over the place, and it's a great look. But now it's not even good gear for noobs so the item isn't seen anymore. My enchanter has a 3000 HEM robe but the look isn't interesting at all and I'd pay the cost of allowing her to wear a FBR look or one of the other very sexy old school designs!

And Fernando says "And you look mahhvelous!"

/hattip to Billy Crystal :)

For me, in the three MMOs I've played over the last 14 years, there's been one pretty consistent rule for me..... I never care what my gear looks like! I guess I'm an outlier in that respect.

Before Defiant my DE SK wore long time Kylong Shinguards, because I liked how these looked like - nice chain with skulls.
(I had full set of Blood Lord's armor.)

When I returned EQ, she still wore "in public" these Kylong legs combined with Defiant plate Smiley: nod Kylong armor looks just gorgeous on DE!

I've known for a long time that some other folks were real concerned about 'EQ fashion,' and I'm one of 'em.

I like to think of a 'theme' for each one of my characters. For example, my beastlord has two ice hammers (ornamentation) and uses blue leather (with armor graphic upgrade) and a 'snowstorm nimbus' for a really obvious winter theme. Pet uses the 'snow spider' petamorph illusion (also shrinks the pet which is handy). Only thing missing is the frost wurm mount, which I can't get because it's a rare drop from one of the LDoN packs. Currently uses a giant spider mount, so with the snow spider pet, it's a winter / spider theme.

But all of my toons have a theme going, usually either fire, ice, forest (green), and 'regal' (fancy threads for the int-casters).

My monk has a hadal templar illusion clicky, and a hadal scout familiar. Gets a *lot* of looks.

Another one I really like is how you can put the armor graphic (for the upgraded armor option) at one class better then what you can actually wear, IF your armor is cloth or chain. So a shaman can use the plate graphic for example, and a wizard leather. But a monk or beastlord could *not* use a chain graphic.

My shaman has the violet plate armor pieces, a purple dragon mount, purple petamorph amethyst tricordent, and 'obliteration ornamentation' for the shield and mace, which are also purple. Sounds like overkill, but looks really good. Been thinking of adding a purple nimbus of some kind, but that might be a bit much.

I like to think when people see that my characters have had a lot of work put into them, that means that I'm familiar with the character and therefore know how to play my class.

I THINK he means ornaments for type 20 slots allow use in one armor type "above" the usual default type. Like the Dark Elf robe ornament I mentioned above can be worn by cloth AND leather classes. He's saying plate ornaments can be worn by chain or plate classes. (Not sure if leather can be worn by chain or v,v,...)

I'm with Tat, I never cared. Had to have a Guild Leader almost insist on me dying my armor before I started doing it in 2004 or so. But the colors were horrid, a mix of browns and greens (ok combo) with pinks and lavenders.

I didn't care though, I knew the gear was temporary and served a purpose.

There is a way to glitch out the look of your armor (like me, a druid, looking like I'm wearing plate). I use Platinum Efreeti Chestplate along with the other pieces of that corresponding Efreeti set. You put all the gear on, then hit an illusion that doesn't use armor graphics (I use my AoN or Speckled Bunny illusion). You put your gear back on while in the illusion, then click off the illusion once all your normal gear is back on and you have the glitch. This works with all armor types, so I can use the Efreeti plate for a plate look, my Terror Infused Link Coat for a chain look, or my Shade Silk Robe for a caster-ish look. Some of the gear to do this isn't usable by all classes so you might have to research and find a certain armor set that fits for your specific class. I love the fact that I can run around as a druid, looking like a bard-type, but with our shield and druid class ornaments Smiley: grin Something fun and different!

Yes, that's correct. A given armor type can use one category 'better' armor ornamentation IF you bought the upgraded armor graphic (chain can use plate ornamentation graphic, leather can use the chain ornamentation graphic, etc.), **AND** you are not going from leather to chain. For some reason, SOE just hates the idea of upgrading the armor graphic from leather to chain. My apologies for not making that more clear in my earlier post.

So, if you have leather defiant armor, you can use a cloth or leather 'armor ornamentation' IF you bought the armor appearance upgrade at the station cash store. If you use chain armor, you can use a chain or plate ornamentation graphic.

So now berserkers and shamen can look like they are running around in plate mail (confirmed - it works). Spellcasters *should* be able to use the leather ornamentation graphic, but I've never experimented on that personally (edit - cloth ornamentation item description says cloth can use leather graphic). And remember that you have to have 1200 station cash to activate the 'upgraded armor graphic' for ONE character. Gets expensive if you have a lot of characters, but I admit the new armor looks have really grown on me.

One big correction / edit from my earlier post - I confirmed that leather ornamentation graphics cannot be 'upgraded' to chain. All of the other graphics - cloth to leather, leather to cloth, chain to plate, and plate to chain - work. Sorry about that.

Take care.

Thanks for explaining, Zirumkin!
I have been away for years, so there is lots of possibilities and information I don't know about.
I am not too happy about how iksar shaman looks these days. As I am Silver member seems that I have to use this illusion trick.

This thread is awesome!

This work after zoning? I made the robe to fool around with it and don't seem to get the same results. Definitely doesn't work on a Halfling. The robe is ALL/ALL, surprisingly, but it looks like a leather chestpiece on a Halfling druid. Not a pretty look! I tried it on my high elf enchanter but evidently the robe she's using, gilded riding gown is the same graphic as the silk robe! LOL. Once I removed the red dye there's no difference so might as well just do that since I do like the white robe look. (Man, I have to upgrade her, that gown is so outdated now...)

I was searching info about clicky illusion items and I am a bit confused which one of those will work.
Many of illusion clickys are /claim items, but is there any 55 SK is able to quest/loot?
Or should I wait till next Halloween to get Bone Mask of Horror Smiley: cool

What u mean by "will work"? Just look for the race/class restrictions. A lot of click illusions are limited to bards and rogues. But some are for everyone. Most of them are rare drops or quested items. There are also potions available in the Bazaar pretty cheaply. Any enchanter with the "project illusion" AA ability can cast almost any of their own self-buff illusions on a group member. Of course, those will drop upon zoning. (The enchanter's own self-illusion is preserved when zoning.)

allakhazam search page is your friend.

I usually don't spend too much effort on appearance. But that's mainly because I run with crazy people who just love to randomly cast illusions and whatnot on everyone else around them. I just accept that I'm rarely ever going to see what my own character actually looks like anyway. Since I usually play in 3rd person view, I have to look for the weapon I'm wielding to know where the hell I am most of the time.

I do have basic dye colors though. Just so that I don't have to deal with mismatched colors all the time. But that's as far as I've gone. I've looked at the various ornamentation armors, but it does seem like a lot of cost for an appearance mod. I'm also not super happy with the lack of real variation with the various armors. Sure, they're different colors and styles, but not enough different IMO. They all really do kinda have the same look to me. Dunno, nothing I've seen really screams "this looks cool!".

To a degree yes,

I use mainly Prismatic Dyes from my stockpile in my shared bank for visible armor colours and player made or marketplace weapon ornamentations for any of my alts that have ugly weapon graphics.

Haven't touched the Heroes Forge armor as yet ...still waiting and hoping for SOE-EQ to free its use up... instead of one having to purchase the unlocker for each character (unless that has changed and I don't know it yet).

No, sadly it doesn't work after zoning. If you are trying to use a robe graphic on a race that doesn't wear one, then what I do is cast my DE clicky or HE clicky so that the graphic for the robe actually "sticks". If that makes sense... haha
#24 May 02 2014 at 9:37 AM Rating: Good

Absolutely!

For example, my Half Elf Druid will not wear any leg item that doesn't show her whale tail (okay, so it's more of a Cheeky style but still...). I keep her in leather. I've used the glitch to keep my High Elves in their leather ********** looks. The way EQ armor graphic design has devolved since Velious, you have to jump through tiny hoops placed hundreds of feet off the ground, just to look decent. I don't do it with all of my characters, just a handful that I think have looks that befit their personalities. Like two of my wizards (a human and a DE) will only wear robes with SMR-like qualities (the Power Girl window) because they're based on The Simbul (a Forgotten Realms character noted for her overt beauty and curves....and her temper). Another of my DEs is a Liriel Baenre homage so she only wears leather graphic armor.

Maintaining a particular look becomes even more important when the design ethic seems to be to make everything look the same.
