yes, it is possible. I run my FFXI at home on a 56K, and there is no problem at all with zoning or the like. I also play on broadband at a friends, and there really isn't a noticible difference (other than reconnecting every so often with my dialup)

Couple people i know are on 56k. This is what they told me.

1. Around a lot of people it lags and doesnt show but like 20% of the people actually around you.

2. Its horrid around weather effects. (though i would think that is the computer but he claims its not because he has a 3.2ghz monster machine)

I've been playing on a 56k for months and the two things I have noticed that might interest you are that: 1. You will disconnect every now and then, and 2. Some services are better than others as far as lag is concerned. On the second point, I give an example: I used connect using AOL, but I used to get lag all over the place, but after switching to NetZero High Speed, (which costs half as much, but requires a v92 ready modem for the high speed dialup), I only get lag in 3 places. These are: all of West Rounfare, the forested west side of East Rounfare, and on the bridge from the auction house to the residential district in Windurst Woods. I hope this helps you out.Smiley: grin

hmmm i have 3 questions for you lady

1- is that a pic of luna from lunar sssc ?

2- how can dark be holy?

3- the logitech controller, thats not the keyboard you mean right???

To answer your questions:

1. Yes, in a way, (spoiler).

2. Althena was referred to as the "Dark Goddess of Lunar" by Ghaleon, though to one who obviously hasn't finished the game, it seems an oxymoron. You ought to go finish that, the ending's worth playing through again from the beginning.

3. It's a USB controller. I'm a console gamer at heart, and could never get into the keyboard control thing. After a while you can't move to the right and your sprite will actually walk to the left without you pushing a thing. The only way to even temporarily fix the problem is to actually take the controller apart and wobble the analog sticks. This will fix it for a few hours. I just got used to rotating the camera while running straight to make my turns.
Now I use a USB/PSX adapter and play with a PS2 controller, and it works great. If this interests you, I gut it at Radio Shack after doing a lot of research online, and reading in several forums that other people who had used the Dual Action controllers had switched to this and it had worked well for them. The one thing to remember if you get one of these Plastation adapters is that you need to turn off the forced feedback in the gamepad options in the FFXI Configuration program.

lol heeeeeeeeeeeeeeey i beat lunar sssc and i owned both the original sega cd games thank you very much :P though i sold both lunar 1's (ps1 n sega cd)for a cool $100 each, shameful yes, but a $100 each ! i only wish i hocked FFT while it was still hot, damn velius !!

lol and i can't recall every quote, need to rebuy sssc "sob" i never bought lunar eternal blue for ps1 though since i read it wasn't a major diffrence in plot and stuff, mostly just cosmetic upgrade? sides sega cd just rocks, snatcher 4 life !

and i actually just bought the logitech usb keyboard for ps2, tis pretty cool cause i'm very much a console only player too, it has the analogs and all the buttons on a normal dual shock 2

I play on a dial-up with my laptop at work, and it functions well enough. My laptop isn't the latest and greatest, so I turned off a lot of things(weather effects, only 512x512 textures, lowered clipping, etc) but I can play just fine. There is a pause once you first log in before it will display all the nearby characters, and with a lot of people around the game will lag considerably. I don't know if that would be from the connection, or from my computer though. I should test playing on my laptop at home using a cable modem sometime though.

i play on a dialup and on a 56k in malaysia
it's definitely workable but it lags..oh it lagggggssss every now and then and after playin it for 2 mths, these are the things that happen most of the times :-

1) lag in all the towns, especially sandoria
2) lag when you hunt near a full group ( 6 members ) in any area
3) lag when the mobs starts to do something funny, etc: bomb toss, goblin rush etc etc
4) lags you out every now and then
5) watch yourself run and u can't do anything about it when you lag :P ( usually u run into a mountain or wall or straight into the arms of the mob )
6) I tend to believe that you really lag less in dungeon areas ( gusgen etc etc)
7) you will practically die in khazam and the areas connected to it.

that's all for now :) will edit the post when i find something new ^^

Weather effects are one of those "Video slowdown" issues, and has nothing at all to do with connection speed/latency.

The only real problem dial up should have in FFXI would be updates, that seems like that would REALLY suck. Otherwise, "lag" issues shouldn't be a problem unless you use a poor ISP, like AOL or the like.

WOW, ity sure is nice to know that I can play with my 56K modem, I was worried about that, and I have a question, everyone seems to say that AOL is a bad ISP server thingy, how much worse is it and should I use another? would using another internet service give me better ingame play...?

I have dial-up over AOL, and rarely get disconnected and I have almost no slow down problems that I can see. Things may slow down a bit in busier areas, but there is no skipping/jumping lag (which is more visual, granted)

I'm sorry for doubting you.
So the keyboard controller works well? I was kind of leary of getting it because of my issues with their wannabe-Playstation controller for Windows.
Thanks.

i dial up at 53.2 and it runs great. the only time i ever get lag is when someone picks up the phone and tries to use it at my house or when i'm at the ah in lower jeuno. other than that it runs perfect. i never have lag during battles or get disconnected.

I just have a question to add to this post, is MSN bad to get online with? I plan on getting this for PS2 when it comes out and I use MSN and it's dial up so I was just wondering if that will really effect my game that much. I mean people say you lag but do you lag bad enough to not make you want to play or is it just little 1 second lags?

I live out in the boondocks and only have 2.8k dial up, lag is not horrible, except at aution houses and slightly slow in battle:(, but over all its better thatn nothing. The only problem is that i had to take it to a friend's house to download my initial updates, but that takes like 2 hrs anywhere!;)

I use dial up when I am at work and it works fine. I do notice a slight latency update issue when compared to my dsl at home but nothing that would make the game "unplayable."

I would also like to point out that alot of the above "lag" issues have to do with the computer and not the connection, but updates do come slightly slower with dial up.

Only thing that I would watch out for is a new install. I dont even want to think about updating the game from a new installation with dial up *shudders*

lol awww, this is why you need to pursue the bohemian lifestyle! if there's one thing i learned from my time at boces(sp?) art school, it's that creative people rarely ever work, most of the time is spent talking, doing other stuff, napping in the dark room, but never working lol, hope this helps

I play on dialup and have very few problems at all. I didn't even have much lag in the Treants Christmas event. Although the Jeuno AH is just a little troublesome every now and again. But my answer would be that yes, dialup is very do-able for this game.
