Basically just an overview of what the server merging will do to transactions, characters, and active characters of the end server. Interesting results are going to happen I am sure. I forsee many problems but not a bad thing to have many more available players to do missions with.

This data was updated on: Thursday, March 18th, 2010 @ 01:00 Eastern. The first 19 servers will more than likely have the largest Japanese population. The servers after that probably have the most North American/European population. Asura being the most popular server as of right now in that group. The population data is from FFXIAH, the server creation dates are from FFXI Wiki.

Aion Total Players, All Servers: 56,110 Active Legions (+10,225 change from 01/01/2010)
^ Taken from Aion's main website. The Live Status reflects the number of legions per side. Hard to say how many characters per legion and whether or not it's total number of legions or active legions. Will look for Aion population information on the side though.

World of Warcraft Total Players, All Server: 5,926,249 Characters (+495,853 change from 01/01/2010)
^ Taken from Warcraft Census website, doesn't include people lower than level 10.

JPButton has a great list of changes to the game during the pre-NA release time period, including server start up dates. It's a very entertaining read to see some of the more significant changes to the game.

So, if any servers are "merged" it'll probably be a mandatory evacuation of Remora and Hades to the other servers with only 9,000-ish active accounts.

If they rolled it out over 3 months and allowed groups and linkshells to choose what server they wanted to go to over that course of time, I could see it working.

Still, though, I'm surprised they haven't locked down Phoenix if it's gotten to be more active than Bahamut and Odin. Maybe the folks on the latter two have more mules.

The 500,000 number SE touts is probably including secondary, inactive mules like mine that are on separate accounts and have subjobs and jobs at 20+, but aren't listed on FFXIAH because they're not used for anything besides being level sync whores or crafting storage.

Personally I'd love to see some server merging taking place. I don't say this because I think zones are underpopulated... I'd just like to be exposed to more people without having to leave my linkshell behind!

Added colored text to my post for easier reading perhaps. I have to agree that eventually server merges will take place. It's not surprising the two newer servers seem to have the least active. However with it being the last servers for characters to merge into; it probably has a heavy endgame crowd. I would definitely recommend that anyone starting a new character should not choose either of these two servers. And it looks like Garuda, Kujata and Seraph are the next 3 to merge perhaps after Remora/Hades merge. The next year is going to be an interesting time for Final Fantasy XI. Can't wait to see what is in store for us. Asura where I am from seems to be the strongest server of the new ones added. I started in the spring after the winter that server was added to the cluster.

I'm a long time native of Odin and once bought a content ID to create a mule before I discovered Odin was closed. So I decided to get my one dollars' worth and created a character on Hades just out of curiousity.

It's so funny to see the cultural differences between the two servers. Granted I was only on Hades for one week compared to 5 years on Odin but here are my observations.

On Odin the Japanese community is huge and with a some exceptions, generally snub NA players from most activities like exp partys, Salvage and Assault. Zone into Whitegate sometime during JP peak hours and your chatscreen fills with kanji. You'll see a number of JP players with "JP ONLY" or "English No thanks!" in their seacom at all levels. Whether anyone cares to admit it or not, there is a barrier that exists between the two cultures you can 'feel' it.

On Hades the exact opposite is true. While you won't see "JP No thanks!" in any seacom the Japanese community is definitely the minority. On my last day at Hades I was fortunate to get an invite as a subless 15 Whm. The party consisted of 2 Japanese players and 4 NA players including myself. Everyone was polite and communicated only through auto-translate and emotes. I have to say that party gave me more fun, smiles and laughs than the usual exp grind I'm used to. I'm not saying every party is like this (or not) but in this particular party, even with different cultures, there was no barrier of any kind. I even think I made a couple of friends that day.

None of that on Phoenix but if anything the NA don't like to talk. My only gripe is Phoenix is really a endgame server and not many shells to choose from either.

I always wondered why people liked to talk about how servers need to be merged and some jazz. Now I realize I might have an entirely different perspective after sitting on the most active server.

Nice list, rate up!

Even if that were the case and your figures are correct: Their yearly income not including expansions would be in the region of, 74,093,220. To be a profitable MMO a 100,000 people player base is required.

They are not losing money on us thats for sure.

No point looking at it like that, the figures would indicate Fairy is boderline popular, but /sea all tells me otherwise.

I have been on Hades since I started to play in 05' and I always wondered where the "JP onry" complaints came from. I have never run into a rude "JP onry!" player on Hades. Maybe I'm just lucky.

To me this was the biggest benefit of having transferred Servers.

On Pandy, you get the occasional "JP onry" player, but it's that bad. You do hear a lot of negative bashing in /shout to other players though. That being said, I'm glad I never tried to join the Odin server. A lot of our players having been server transferring to Phoenix lately so it didn't really surprise me to learn Phoenix is very active.

though it is amazing that even though our population is so high, we suck at protecting the astral candy.

Im happy with Sylph, not overcrowded, not AS active to find a party unless you make it yourself really. But its calm, but close niches where people know each other or least the active ones. Endgame shells are solid too. =)

I found this kind of funny as well. I have two accounts, one with two chars and one with 8, and I know some people who are insane with the gardening mules and have multiple accounts with all slots filled. SE's data is pretty much a joke. I'm not saying that FFXI is dieing, but it's obvious that people are slowly moving on to other things.

Ahh kujata. Looking at those player counts and then lookin back to how empty the server was the last time I played in august, I won be coming back to ffxi anymore. Oh well, I guess I'll wait until ffxiv comes out.

I'd like to see some server merging. Not on a massive scale but disperse 2-3 of the less populated servers to the ones that are still open for immigration. There was less than 900 people on my server a few nights in NA prime time. Unheard of just last year with 1500+ and 2000+ in 2007. Lets face it, the game is losing more members than it is gaining with new folks signing up. I like seeing players going about their business throughout the various zones etc. Now many zones are empty.

Interesting. I've never been on any server other than Gilgamesh (I also made a Hades mule to chat with a RL friend who started on Hades independently of me), but it did strike me how different the servers are. One of the first things non-Gilgameshers will notice coming to my server is the massive French population--it's apparently the non-official French server. They're on during the day (NA time), primarily, but you see some of the more hardcore endgamers still on during NA peak hours (late at night for them). The interesting thing about it is how FFXI was released much later in French than it was in English, so (other than the aforementioned hardcore endgamers, who tend to be up with the times) it's like a look back in time to where the NA population was several years ago.

I think it's probably similar to how the JPs viewed the NAs when we started playing FFXI: watching them make rookie mistakes/flat-out bizarre choices (like sword DRGs (???)), the prevalence of PLD/WAR on everything, but not understanding their language enough to talk to them and explain why they're doinitwrong. I've known some great FR players (and some horrible ones), but I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a prevalence of anti-FR player attitude among a significant chunk of the NA playerbase.

Oddly, the German players seem to fit in just fine (although they're harder to spot since most Germans can speak English from a young age, and will respond in English if you talk to them in English).

I would too, to be honest. The other day when I logged on I went out to WG to see if anything interesting was going on, and the only 5 shouts I saw in the hour or so I hung out there, were all from people I personally know in the game. A couple years back, the log was filled with just random people looking to put together this, or that. Not anymore.

When I sit around for hours without an invite there is something wrong. Time to merge those servers Square.

Excenmille, just one suggestion, add a last line named Total, so that we can know at a glance what are the totals for each row without having to pull out a calculator or pasting those numbers into a spreadsheet first. I assume you are already using a spreadsheet for this so it should be pretty easy to do. Thanks in advance, and don't worry about it if you can't do it, it just would be a nice detail to make this thread even better.
