Rallying new or returning players!Follow

#1 Feb 16 2011 at 1:34 PM Rating: Decent
Posting this here too, to see if I can garner some interest to potential new players or returning players.

Are you tired of the current trend of MMO's? Are you sick of "themepark" games that all follow the same path. Killing 10 rats, and rarely working or playing with others, outside of instanced dungeons where the only people you socialize with are your fellow group members who would rather curse you into oblivion and get their "Uber purplez" than have a civilized conversation and make new friends.

Do you miss the days of old when these games were less about "me" and more about "us", our friends we made in game, our guilds etc. When people got together for a common goal and spent hours exploring vast lands and dungeons together. They weren't trying to apply math problems to their play sessions, they just "played" and "had fun".
Well, most of you have probably seen me post countless times "Looking for a game" playing one for a few months, and then ending up right back here, posting the same tired question and getting the same answers. Why can't I stick with a game? Why aren't any of these new games fun? I was talking to a friend today and was explaining to him my history with these games and he asked:

"Dude, how in the heck did you make it to end game in FFXI and WoW?, you don't seem to stick with any one game for longer than a few weeks/months?"
In answering his question I figured it out.

PEOPLE...

Its what kept me in WoW for 4 years, and what kept me in FFXI for 4.5. The People. The guilds I was in, the people I socialized with. In a nutshell this is what made the games fun for me. I still think at its heart, this is the appeal of MMO's in general.. despite the content.. etc.. Getting to socialize and hang out in a huge virtual world with a bunch of people you'd otherwise never meet.

So whats the problem? Well, because of the change in the MMO genre. The "communities" we once knew have been replaced with min max "Gamers" who are more interested in how many purples they have and how fast they can get through the content than any kind of socialization or adventure.

So, I know what your asking. Why the long winded post? Well, After much thought and going through literally every decent MMO to come out in the past 10 years trying to find something to play. I thought, maybe there are some people out there who have the same problem I have, and instead of trying to find a game and THEN search for folks to play with.. what if I could bring people with me to play with?

Someone else tried something similar, and while it got a huge response here.. it seemed like the biggest problem with it was that noone wanted to agree on a game and it sort of just fizzled out. So, here's what I propose. I'm currently reinstalling:

FINAL FANTASY XI

I thought long and hard about this, and this would be the closest thing to the kind of game we all remember, that still has a decent population, and hasn't change "too" much so that you cannot still enjoy the things about it that made it great. In fact a new patch thats coming will make things even better. Fields of Valor restrictions are being lifted, and mobs are becoming more soloable. This is going to improve the playability of the game to what I think will be a level that it should have always been at. Anyone who played it back just after release, knows how difficult it was. Now I think its "just right", and would be a perfect fit for a group of like minded individuals.
So I'm extending an offer to anyone who is in the same boat as me, who is looking for a game but can't seem to find anything that suits them, who may just be looking for some other folks to play with. I haven't chosen a server just yet, because I wanted to see just what kind of response I would get, but we'd be joining a highly populated server, and I'd like to form a linkshell and group up to complete content from level 1-90.

If you've never played FFXI and always wanted to, but didn't want to be all alone in your endeavor, this is your chance. Doing content together, exploring the lands, and just shooting the **** with each other. Thats what MMO's have always been about to me, and FFXI has the perfect setting for that. If you are interested, reply to this thread and add me on XFIRE.. Azmyth2k. LETS DO THIS!

If you join Titan I'd love to play with you, because you seem to genuinely be looking for the same experience I came back for. My name is Craine in game and I'm seeking to experience the game as close to how I did when I originally played back in 2003-2009.

Edit: By which I mean exploring, doing all of the missions, unlocking content even if it's no longer "relevant" to the new end-game. Having ACTUAL friendships and not just playing in a world populated by hundreds of strangers who you rarely interact with.

thats exactly what i am trying to do. I am actually starting from scratch. I hadn't decided on a server yet, wanted to se how much interest there was first, and try to all go to the same server as well as create a linkshell.

I have relatively little accomplished on my account and am going back to play a level 1 job since I've only just returned two days ago. I'm happy to repeat what I've already accomplished with new players and use the little I have already achieved in order to help other returning players as well. I really only came back because I was looking for the exact same experience you described in your post. Obviously, where you begin is entirely up to you, but if you come to Titan, I'm already there waiting for someone like you (and hopefully others who will see this).

We will use Titan as a base right now. If anyone else is interested and happens to know of a more populated server or some other info that would make another server better etc. we'll see if they chime in. But as for now, we'll say "Titan" would be the official server for this group unless someone has objections or we have a large group alread on a different server.

Well, there is a base group of players on Titan who are into helping new/returning players. I found them when I was looking at the forums about a week ago, thinking of re-installing, and reading their posts made me decide to go ahead with it and install. I haven't hooked up with them yet, but I've only been back for about 3 hours of actual playing time. From the looks of it, they have a range of different levels but have welcomed a lot of new/restarting players who are very close to the beginning of the game still. That's what attracted me to Titan in the first place.

It looks like they started encouraging new players to come to Titan about 2 months ago, and have had a good amount of responses since.

I know this might not mean anything but I am either purchasing the Ultimate collection from either steam or for xbox 360, really soon and Would be more than willing to join this group I tried FFXI I think 1 or 2 years ago and for two months was so devoid of anyone to adventure with that I just gave up, I am a noob persay but I'm a mighty good talker and learn quickly.

So all I really need to know is can I join?
Is this going to include any Rping?
Also should I get it for Xbox 360 or PC?
and is Titan our designated server? I am starting researching for the best new player server right now if I can join ( :

Titan seems to have a decent bunch of recently new players and those who are willing to help. I transferred there upon my return, so I'm stuck there. You absolutely would be able to join - the point is to experience the game as if we were all new and in your boat. I would say get it on PC - almost any cpu can run it these days and the price on Steam is unbeatable. I find it easier to play on a keyboard anyhow.

Edit: I don't know about role playing. I've done it a bit before, but people don't usually stay into for long enough and honestly, if you're all new and all playing from the beginning and trying to experience all of the content and not just rush to end game, there is plenty to talk about and enjoy that sometimes you don't even need it.

Titan it is then my friends! and yeah I was thinking the same thing myself, But then again this game I heard takes quite awhile to accomplish the bigger missions and my family PC is shared but I'm sure I will squeeze in as many hours as possible, I have honestly loved this series my whole life haha.

Also the RP portion isn't necessarily important to me most times peoples characters take a life of their own anyways!

There's nothing wrong with playing on 360 if you think you'll get better playtime out of it; I just think the deal on steam right now is real good. I play XIV with a PS3 controller, so I'm sure playing XI on a controller wouldn't be bad at all, I just have always been really comfortable with the keyboard, but I play on my laptop and can take the game from room to room with me, which is convenient.

I would say Titan it is.

My character's name is probably going to be Azmyth if its not taken. I'm updating right now but I doubt it will be playable til tomorrow sometime. If those joining us want to get ahead of the game, reply to this thread with your characters name so we can find you in game once everyone is updated and in game.

Cool. I'm looking forward to seeing you all. My name is Craine in game and I'm from sandy but can travel to all of the starting cities to join you guys. If Blu wants to create a LS, I can hand out pearls at all three starting cities so everyone can get in right off the bat, no matter where they choose to start.

Thanks for your help Craine, I'm going to use my PC and maybe later on when I start building my custom gaming PC invest in a kick *** PC game controller. I'm downloading right now and my name will be Chigo Vagabond.

Should be up and running by the morning, see you all their (:

Also I don't know if this really matters, but I'd like to know everyone's starting class so we can be a well rounded party, got a pet peeve with me being the same job as everyone when theirs another need lol

I've got 71 THF, 41 NIN, 17 WAR, 1 everything else. I'm playing on an old alt I was able to reactivate. So I can level sync those jobs or play as any of MNK, RDM, WHM, BLM and I unlocked RNG today while I was bored. I've got virtually nothing else done though, I just used to dual-box with this account for treasure hunter. No mission lines or anything done really so no worries for any of you guys who will be starting entirely from scratch; I'm going to be playing as a level one with you and the only thing I won't be doing at the same time as you is unlocking a sub job - instead I'll help you guys unlock yours.

I'm either going white mage or a melee class.

I always played white mage in the past, so I know that class the best but at the same time I sort of want to try something new. Perhaps dragoon.

Denos, Aceskyheart, Yappabass, Azmyth. I'm going to look for you all right now. Anyone else who comes in here - just create a character on Titan and send a tell to Craine or Azmyth and we'll try to get everyone set up in a LS asap.

One helpful tip that a lot of returning players don't know about, is you don't need to physically travel to each city to pass out linkshells. The chocobo circuit is located in each city as is a central 'hub', you can access the same place from your respective cities, pass out pearls, and then return to your own. No need to waste time with airships and travelling!
