What's a good way to play through the storyline?Follow

#1 Jul 10 2014 at 6:50 PM Rating: Good
I'm pretty new to this game and I really enjoy the world and the characters. I'd like to go through quests and missions to experience more of the main storyline, but I'm not really sure where to start. Does one thing sort of lead to another or what? Any advice?

start with whatever city you are in and go down the line in order. just remember this is 11 years of content and good luck and have fun in this wonderful world.

A bit late but Chains of Promathia's story pretty much starts immediately after Rise of the Zilart. However it's actually impossible to not get the starting cutscene of CoP while doing RotZ now(Was only really possible pre-CoP). Otherwise the expansion's stories are pretty much all separate and unrelated. I'd recommend trying to do them chronologically but you don't have to.

do the quests as you level up using your trust npcs for help, or someone similar level, if you outlevel the content or get a lvl 99 to zerg it for you its no fun! the nation missions and chains of promathia missions can be done as yu level but chains of promathia has the best story! you can kill the first bosses solo with your trust npcs around lvl 35 (promyvians) maybe lower if your prepared enough, im lvl 37, just beat promyvian dem and am rank 4 in bastok missons! wiped to promyvian holla last night, ill win it tonight with a poison pot and anima! i also made it to the top of delkfutts tower with no sneak and invis for my last bastok mission, fighting my way up, started at lvl 30 was 36 by the time i got to the top1!

I'm curious as to how someone decides to pick up a MMO 10 12 years after it's release.
Not digging into you, just genuinely interested.
I know I wouldn't risk picking up any MMO that old, even if it was as big as WoW, which this is not.
Unless your a FF fan and you just never really wanted to play this until now :P

TL;DR: Final Fantasy is a unique, one of a kind MMO. If they would let people just set their level sync to whatever they want to party in old areas; this game would be perfect. To keep from being burnt out; login everyday with a goal in mind. Whether it's as simple as fishing or taking down one of the HNMs for a key item. Plan your journey out with goals and you will never run out of content or be bored :) I promise!

Final Fantasy XI is a unique MMO that is like no other. It has a great story and tons of content for such a cheap price with a monthly subscription. Sure it's not like it was back then; and I do miss the old days I promise. But now is the best time to start back up because SE put you in charge in how fast you want to advance in content and they have made it so you can do it at your own pace without relying on a static group or even an alliance to do so.

That in itself is worth every penny because new players get to see a lot of the missions/story at their own pace while I waited for so long to finish Chains of Promathia and other missions in the past. Being a new player is great! Even though I put many years into this game in the past; coming back and being able to move through content without relying on anyone else has actually been great. And I don't think I would have ever said that back then.

Final Fantasy XI can also run on a lot of older computers (like World of Warcraft/LOTRO). So it is a convenient MMO to play for those that just want one game to put their time into and don't want to upgrade their computer to play something newer. It is hard starting out in Final Fantasy XI because you may not know what to do but Final Fantasy games have always been about adventure; and there is tons of WIKIs out there to push you in the general direction as a new player.

I left Final Fantasy XI once and that was a huge mistake. I will not make that mistake again. I will be here until the end. Now with that said, playing Final Fantasy XIV on the side is a good idea as well if you only login for events/socializing with old friends.

XI is a unique game.

It's the only class-based MMO (that I know of) that allows you to level every job on the same character. It is also the only MMO I've ever played where quests are all about lore rather than being a leveling mechanic. It's also one of the few MMOs where you can use a gamepad (a big plus for some of us oldies with achy hands).

I can understand why someone would want to give it a whirl. It is unforgiving in some ways, but really unique. Honestly it's spoiled me for other MMOs. I try them but I get really annoyed with fetch quests and "kill these three things" quests and the big question marks or exclamation points or w/e.

I recognize that for some folks that stuff is "quality of life" but for me, it's immersion breaking, intrusive, and downright boring. For the most part when I decide to quest in XI, I know I'm going to experience a real story that tells me more about the world and the people who live there.

I've been on and off with FFXI since release. I lost my original character on Ragnarok because I couldn't find my POL ID as well as my new friends were on Leviathan (I wasnt aware at the time you could world transfer). Anyway the last 4 years has been more and more fun because I don't need a full alliance to do all the old stuff from back in the day. LOL! Last night I went to Gustav and solo'd Ungir just for the bow — annnd annnd annnd it wasn't over crowded.
The people are still very helpful when you ask them questions. There's still the original cart before the horse issues in the game, but oh well.
I'm finding as a casual player I now have time to finish all the missions I never got to do. I even started PUP and went from 0-64 over a period of a week in and off playing solo with trusts. Did the AF part as my 99NIN ~ so much fun because I didn't have all the maps ^_^. Really brings back the old day parties because you fight in the old leveling camps. I'll be hitting up Kuftal later this week killing crabs.
The new home points are really cool as well.
To the OP: Keep on playing and having fun. I have a couple excel docs to keep me organized and to make sure I'm not overwhelmed. I still have a billion things to do as well. 1-2 at a time. I have Windurst and Sandoria rank 10, Bastok ay 6. Zilart and CoP are next... never been to Sky or Sea...

TL;DR: FFXI still one of the best MMO's
