Its been beaten like a dead horse i know im risking Karma since its already talked about in 2 other posts on 1st page but i had to throw in my two cents Smiley: twocents

1.Just to start i dont mind being checked, i do mind it when a player checks me repeatedly. The majority of people in game take a look and keep moving but a small but visible minority will do it mulitple times on one person which is a little irritating.

2.Now if a person name is blue that means they are anonymous and obviously dont want to be checked or gawked at, however i found the going /anon is the best way to get people checking me non stop. Its rather annoying, ill be fishing with nothing equiped to save space and ever person that runs by checks me out only to see my rod and bait. Its not like im even sporting cool armor.

3.If your just checking someone to see there job level or job/sub combo just use /sea "insert players name here" function its a lot less intrusive.

I can respect the fact that a lot of people just check others to see there gear, this is useful in parties, and its fun to see what that lvl 75 JP is wearing but if person is in blue it means leave em alone and if you do check take a look and dont keep checking repeatedly, it reflects poorly on yourself.

Also you have to respect the fact that some people both JP and NA dont like being checked by strangers, you might not agree with it but its best to respect others wishes. It doesnt matter if you think its stupid or quibbling little thing or not you gotta respect other players wishes in this game even if you dont agree. If you were wearing uber equipment and everytime you ran through area everyone and there dog started examining you, it might be annoying, course i would take it as compliment but after the 100th check i would be annoyed, gotta look at it from there side of things.

These posts are funny. The whole "issue" with checking stems from the JP players. It is not because they do not want you to look at their gear. It is bc the translation of that emote in JP is roughly equivalent to " "Name" peers at you intently" To those JP players this seems almost as a form of questioning them. This is why there is a "checkin issue". Seeing that JP players thought it was offensive. Now NA players view it as offensive themselves even though our translation is non-intrusive.

I don't check very many people, unless there is a good reason.

But...

They should know after a few hundred checks over several months that this is not the same as someone actually typing "/em stares at you intently". If someone can be offended by something that can't be helped which is caused by a very basic function of the game, (and it is just a game), then they need to grow up.

If I check the wrong person by accedent when trying to look at a bazaar menu, I'm not going to type them up an apology, I've done nothing to wrong them so they don't deserve an apology.

This reminds me of when I was about 12 years old and my cousin would keep saying 'Stop looking at me!!!'

Really, the only issue I have is reapeatedly checking someone. That's just annoying because it shows the emote on their screen over and over. If some guy is running by and I feel like checking them to see what their gear is like, or what lvl they are, etc, I'll do that.

In fact, I often do that to random people as I'm running through an area. Just to see what the lvl/job distribution is like in 'area X'. /sea "Player's name" may be less intrusive, but I'm not stopping to type that. If I can do /sea <t> then I'll macro that and use it since it seems to be an issue for some.

Don't worry, I'll stop looking at you. My fierce eyes shall no longer cause you /panic.

(Edit for spelling)

My God, this is such a freaking MOOT POINT!!! Turn on the freaking filter! It ONLY turns off /check messages, it does NOT turn off your ability to see emotes!

I really don't understand why you people can't take 5 seconds and fix this "problem" forever and never, ever have to deal with it again.

EDIT: Sigh, another person who has a different opinion and slams karma for it. gg

Personally... i dont see whats wrong with checking someone... The way i see it, i worked hard for my gear and lvl's, i want to show it all off as much as possible. If you want to waste your time examining me 50,000 times be my guest.

This about it this way, if people re-check you, that means they are interested and obviously envy you ^^;

tried not to reply but Drakkanwr's post was so WRONG i had to post.

the issue did not start in japan. it started in EQ (everquest) or maybe even UO. in everquest its is a Roleplaying issue. checking someones gear in EQ and in FF11 for that matter is like rifleing through thier stuff (at least from a Roleplaying POV). or for the old school gamers its like looking at someones char. sheet without out asking. and eversince then its become tradition not to look without asking in just about ever game thats come out since. from personal experience i know its considered rude in EQ,UO,DAoC and ShadowBane. and i have friends that say its the same in Anarchy Online and Starwars as well. so no its not a *** thing. its a roleplaying thing. and since most players (evenmore with the PS2 release) in this game think roleplaying means rolling dice its probally gonna be a issue for awhile.

It is all about just being polite.

"But it is a basic game function!"
-- So? It is a also a RPG, which means a little bit of roleplaying can be done and for you to go through my belongings is offensive to me.

"Ya, but you should be proud to display your high level gear"
-- No. I am a rather humble person by nature and I would like to keep my dark staff to myself thank you.

UO doesn't tell the person when you view what they are wearing, only when you view their bag which is the snooping skill, and that was bad because in old uo that meant the person was planning to steal from you.

Seeing as FFXI isn't even PvP they didn't even need to tell the person that they are getting examined. People make a deal out of something that doesn't matter, and all the Japanese people I play with don't mind, much like I don't. I'd be more annoyed if everyone asked first, and i keep a bazaar up just to avoid that, since I hate tells for such trite things.

Wait your telling me you really care if some one examines you?
Are you that self concious? I mean it's not like they are looking at anything cool. Wow they can see what you are wearing. Who cares? I mean come on its a game. Stop thinking that it matters. It really doesnt.

The only time its annoying is when some one chases you around and keeps checking you. But why would they do that? I mean half the time they are just trying to see if your wearing something that they can or they want to be able to. Does it matter to you that some one wants to look at your gear? If so go anon and wear the crap they start you out with. Then no one will look at ya.

And if your in town and some one check's you who cares? Did you forget what it was like when you were new and saw some one in some cool gear? What did you do?

And as far as i know the japenese dont care if you check them.
Hell if anything they nod after checking you. They dont get pissed off and make a post about it.

If it bug's you so much just examine them back or say look im very self concious and i dont like when you examine me. Then wait for the person t laugh at yoou for being childish. Oh yeah i forgot, children are playing this game so do what ya do and cry and ***** about some one looking at you...

lol

Wanted to say first off SWG does not tell you when you are checked...

IF people have such a problem it should not be in game where there is a system message telling you that you are being checked. It is just so petty to complain about people checking you I'm sorry but it really is just a game. Regardless if you think it is rude or whatever someone else may not and you need to also keep that in mind. I think some of you just need to relax about it. No one means you any harm and I'm sure most aren't doing it to be rude. I don't check people at all anymore because for some reason people are so uptight about it, but you must understand being this way about such a minor detail in game just causes more tention between players. It gets to be no fun when you worry about every step you take and every move you make because someone might be offended by it.
Can't we all just get along? I'd hate to see the way you all act when someone actually is rude to you because if you get so mad about something that isn't even supposed to mean anything bad you must smash your keyboard and take your voodoo doll out when someone actually insults you!

I don't want to be mean and I hope I don't come off that way but things like this make the enviroment we live in tougher to deal with. Let it go move on and find something to really get offended by please =( we are all human beings and we do not all think the same so don't get mad at a little curiosity because it very well could be a compliment that someone wants to take the time to check you....

I love forums for that poster right there.(Dankdreamz) Your reaction to the check issue is just the polar opposite of the people you describe in your post. On a delta based system, you are both wrong in your reactions.

I don't like to be checked, just bugs me. We call these things pet peeves, everybody has them. (IE, For you I am sure it is when someone disagrees with what you say) mine is being checked by random jack and jills. I don't yell at them, I usually wave at them. Doesn't make me like it though. Again, this a personal pet peeve thing.

Its ok to disagree lol

I dont mind if you disagree, in fact its more fun (imagine if we all felt the same would suck) I just dont see the big deal if some one checks you. (notice i said I) It's a part of the game.
They arent gonna change it. Just use the filter if its such a big deal for you. Thats what its there for.

I understand if it bothers you but to complaine about it is trivial. (so is this) I have only been anoyed once by a person who was following me and checking me. (me thinks it was an LS friend messing with me) but when i started to check them back they stopped. But i thought it was funny they wanted to chase me around and examine me.

And if its such a big deal wait till you run in to the ppl who made a /em examines you..

lol im sorry but i take this game in stride cause its a game and it really doent hurt me to be examined.
But if it truely bothers you then id suggest turning the filter on so you wont know when it happens.

hehe it is annoying to me, doesn't want to make me quit playing or anything. It is trivial because we are debating a in game system with a option to disable it (well not show it) if you do not like it and the same option allows it. Regardless, it just bugs me for some reason. I really noticed a increase in checks to me when I started to wear the combat casters cloak. I admit, it is a pretty nifty piece of cloth, all blue/white strip thing. Before then as a BLM your stuck with crap brown/black stuff. ; ;

Sometimes if people get annoyed because I check them, I check them repeatedly, to annoy me (I say that my character takes pleasure in annoying others, so I'm just roleplaying), but lots of times when there name is blue, I try to guess there job and level by checking their equipment.

really care. personly no but. but in this game i get alot of annoying people checking me multiple times cause they think its cute. and that gets annoying

actually i politely asked if i could look at thier stuff. always have always will. but then again i have been playing MMORPG's for almost 4 yrs now and tabletop RPG's for 20+

actually i am not annoyed enuff to post. your assumption that it was a *** issue annoyed me enuff to post. aand in this thread at least you where the first to bring up the *** issue. again the only reason i posted in the first place.

Quote:

still wondering why your flaming me about this again i did not say i cared. i was just pointing out its not a *** issue. if anything its a NA issue the **** decided to follow.

and as for kids playing. that a tough issue i have run into kids that where fun to play with but on the whole i find them annoying and wish that games with the under 18 policy would enforce it. alas this game does not have one as far as i know.

A while ago, I was over in Palborough mines. I see the person fighting a quadav, so I check her (I just assume it was a she because of the level of stupidity). When she finishes fighting the quadav, she types, "You are not supposed to check other people without asking permission, it's very rude."

It's about that time when I started looking into ways in which to cause people physical pain over the internet.

If you complain about people checking you, please try as hard as you can to die, please.

U get no message when u are examined in DAoC. Examining someone tells u which realm they belong to. lf they are a member of ur realm, it tells u their class, if they are from an enemy realm, u probably won't have much time to think about the implications as to their possible class, but it tells u their race.

I wasnt trying to flame you. (when i flame im usually bad cause i wont hold back with what i say)

I was just trying to understand why it would bother some one so much.

The reason i brought the japenese issue in to it was to dispell this ridiculous idea that they hate being examined. (my bad was a diffrent thread that it was brought up in)

I wouldnt bother asking to examine some one cause its a bit pointless and if some one asked me id laugh beside them and run away laughing....

again im not sure why you think i was flameing you.
I am just cnfused why ppl make some threads.(my mob was stolen, why are you examining me, all that crap)

Not like they help and if so not too much..

I still dont get why it would bother some one so much.
To me its abit imature to care about.

again sorry if it looks like i was flameing you, i wasnt intentionaly
