Who was your Favorite FFXI Boss? (was game=268)Follow

#1 Feb 20 2010 at 9:51 PM Rating: Decent
This can be anywhere from mission bosses to HNM's. List why you liked the fight(details, details, details!)and also say what you would like to see from the boss fights in ffxiv. My personal favorite fight (although some of you might find me crazy) was the P.M. 4-3?? It's been awhile fight. It was the mission where you had to fight on the airship the different waves of bosses until you got through omega and ultima. It involved such careful timing and execution from every group member and really tested the limits of that level cap. I remember that fight taking me hours to complete but when we finally pulled it off(this was pre-nerf), we were so excited! Post your thoughts! :)

Odin hands down. He just radiates bad *** with that 4 galkas long lance and his crazy looking horse that looks like it eats dragon steak for breakfeast lunch and dinner. and lets not forget Zantetsuken. Love the name and the animation. Odin > Alexander

U/O was an epic fight.
AN was a great sense of accomplishment.
ACP 11 and the last CoP fight were the most visually appealing to me.
DM was memorable but not in a good way.
Ohat run was probably the best night of my life in game. 12 hour run I was the last to get mine It was light when I started it was morning when I put it on lol.

gods and kings were never nearly as impressive or as fun nor were limbus/nyzul/dyna/einherjar/salvage bosses either imo.

2-3

why?

Because it's fun trying to win a fight with people who have mostly never completed a BCNM before. :D

Did this 2-3 times a week it seemed as well.

Divine Might... took so many attempts back in the day and to this day it remains one of my favorite battles. Also hiding in a corner as my friend RDM solo Fenrir for me, was quite the spectator event lol

Maat was pretty intense as well. the sweat you build up on fighting maat for the first time on your first 75 is unforgettable. I got all kinds of meds I didn't even use it was over in less than a minute but I look back and smile on it which is the point I believe.

Promathia
(pre-ToAU)

The difficulty level was not a facet of luck or rock-paper-scissors of specific class's attributes or abilities.
No class was excluded from the fight by virtue of say, having a piercing weapon. The ability to let prishe act as a tank presented an interesting choice for players.

The theatrics were spot-on; Good character design, good environment design, nice music, good introduction, good resolution. You liked going into it, you liked being there, you liked leaving.

The gameplay mechanics were similarly well handled; The NPCs had good AI, there was some required reactions in response to the color-coded shields, there were some unique abilities in the form of an unecho-droppable silence and amnesia (until ToAU came out anyway), and there were no silly grind gimmicks like Shumeyo salt or CCB Polymer. The fight lasted long enough to get comfortable, but didn't overstay it's welcome.

The fight was solid in every category, with one exception. Taking you out of the fight for a cutscene and then plopping you back in again complete with re-buffing time is jarring. I can't tell if this was a result of not being able to switch out an actor midfight, or art direction. But it's something I could do without in XIV.

It's due to the game being online and people progressing through cutscenes at different paces (see also: the 56k cap on this game, to be fairer toward people with weaker connections). Pretty much every battlefield in the game with multiple phases works this way, not just this one. So I wouldn't expect this to really change.

Less like "why do we have to wait?" and more like "handle the transitions between stages in-game".

Definitely Divine Might. That was such a fun fight, especially with a kite setup. Though my fond memories might be biased from going 1/1.

I was really excited to do the 6-4 Airship fight, and it ended up being really....easy. Went 1/1 on that as well and it was sort of a let down after hearing all the horror stories. (in before "ZOMG you did it after nerf vs. they didn't nerf that fight etcetcetc)

Promathia of course. I love all BCNMs with cool sidekicks... which sadly is only one.

Oh yeah, I suppose Promathia was a lot of fun as well, especially since we wiped @ 1%ish and I got up and finished him off on RDM.

I'd have to go with Promathia, if not just for the arena you fight him in.

Promathia was pretty good. I also liked fighting Archduke Kam'lanaut.

CoP - Promathia
ToAU - The Black Coffin (Mission 15)
WoTG - The Jeuno BC (Mission 14)

The three I mentioned have really cool looking battlefields, and the WoTG one I liked specifically for the use of unconventional strategies to beat the main boss. I liked how you had to run around the battlefield saving all the soldiers from the small waves and then letting them pound on the main bad guy for you, fun times.

Ehh, so many games do things like that that it really doesn't bother me anymore.

Yeah, Promathia was a fun one. I ended up doing it twice back-to-back because one of our party DCed in the CS you get afterwards lol. The arena is definitely one of the coolest in the game. Plus, fighting a god! You've been hearing about him for the whole expansion and you finally get to see him, gives quite a sense of awe. Especially since he turns out to be this massive, ancient being - he looks nothing like his statue in the Hall of the Gods. It kind of makes me wonder what Altana really looks like. I'd imagine she's pretty much a massive aern, like AV.

My favourite mission battlefield is probably U/O though. Again, really cool battlefield, and while the Promathia fight has this sort of otherworldly, outside-of-time feel to it, U/O has a really tense feel. The combination of fairly strict time limit and all the horrible things you hear about it before going in really racks up the nerves, and then the elation when you win is awesome.

A lot of CoP is really well done in that regard. The fights manage to be challenging but usually still fun, and they're often a lot more interesting and unique than other fights in the game. Diabolos' falling floor tiles require a high level of care and precision. You fight Ouryu at a level when most people have never even *seen* a wyrm before. Mammets change job and weaknesses on the fly. The Snoll Tzar is just a massive zerg rush, again at a level most people have never zerged anything down before. Etc..

I also really like fighting wyrms. There's something very satisfying about squaring up against something that's just so much bigger than you and then trying to stay alive as it tries to eat you, while everyone around you tries to kill it faster than it kills you. The combination of feeling badass and seeing loads of people cooperate to take down something so huge is pretty good. I think basically any fight that allows me to get battered around by something huge and impressive is fun :D Behemoths, Kirin, Bahamut, Alexander, ...

Delver, probably. First real battlefield fight for me that was tough because we didn't know really what to expect and were underprepared, plus carousel, impalement, and brume made it tough. Between that super boss music and seeing only the creepy long spindly legs while you're fighting, great stuff.

Wasn't as exciting on subsequent runs when people brought along their share of anima/read up on impalement, but those first few times were great.

The Shadow Lord. Not because he's tough or anything but because he was the first big boss I faced, looked effing HUGE and was a struggle back then.

In a group setting for me its a tie between Alexander fight and COP airship fight (pre cop nerf) Both took good teamwork and skill to complete and both had a good balance of difficulty without feeling too impossible...and both felt REALLY good once I got them done.

Solo however...well I would say maat since I did him on RDM back in 05 and it took me 7 tries to finally beat him down...but nothing satisfied me more than kicking Laila's a$$ in DNC genkai 5... yeah I was 75 already and I didn't need to do that fight...but I really hate that b*tch...XD

Dark Ixion is probably my favorite fight to tank. It's especially fun when a rival shell crowds you while you try to fight and you can try to get the pony to aim a spear at them.

"Blue ****, blue ****! Runrunrunrunrun!" on Vent is always fun.
