Hey everyone, my interest has been resparked. I was just wondering if I would be able to participate effectively in the beta tests if ive only had about 3months exp playing ffxiv 1.0?

Since you haven't actually said you're in the beta, I'll let this post slide.

Generally your role in the beta is to participate in their forums, play the game as much as you can and really push limits on things. Try to get on top of buildings, try running the game at different resolutions and with different configurations, etc. A lot of people think it's just a chance to play it early but if you're serious about testing then you need to be willing to try to break the game by running it with strange configurations and seeing what happens and testing the boundaries in-game and reporting anything you find to the devs.

Most people don't seem to realize that the beta tester's job isn't to play a game, but to break it.

You're not allowed to say you're in the beta, or talk about anything that is in the beta. I nuke posts where people state they're in the beta. Your question brings up a good point though, and like lolgaxe said, many don't realize they are there to break the game, not get an early peek.

That's what guys like Starlord on the respective forums would tell you over and over. And personally I think that's a big pile of bantha pudu. As a beta tester I am not bound by any code of honor, and I certainly don't need a NDA-**** running around that tells people what to do and what not. Even SE does not expect me to methodically break the game. It's cool if I try to, and nice for them, but I am not expected to. I didn't sign any paper that reads that I will WORK for them for free. I signed up as a beta tester because I want to try out the game. Not because I want to work. And certainly not because they deserve my loyalty.

By reading the posts on the... I mean, any... beta forum, you can easily tell who's been around on this planet for a while and who has not. Those with previous experience will just play, and report stuff they discover on the way. Because at this stage of development, bugs are discovered by human wave attacks, not by single-man commando operations anyway. It is those who have absolutely no clue that will constantly run around like a weasel on crack and try to organize, correct, and most of all: regulate, admonish and correct other people. Because finally, finally, their own kindergarden interpretation of the NDA and the beta contract appears to provide them with an official justification to do so. Little man syndrome mixed with barely disguised authoritarianism. Totally oblivious of the fact that they are just one tiny, little, completely unimportant fish among 10.000s.

Pro-tip from papa rinsui: play the damn GAME as you normally would, make some friends for later, enjoy life, and report all the bugs you stumble over. That's all they ask for, and all you really need to do.

Whatever you say, "dad," but you're actually both right. The bugs you're meant to find are stress-related bugs. Their own paid QA teams should be finding other types of bugs the developers might have missed. Beta testing is just to see if something shakes loose when a whole pile of unpaid testers jump in at once, and all the beta testers get is nothing more than an early glimpse they can't really talk about on any official or fan forum. And that's good enough for all involved.

Dito. The bottomline is: Enjoy the ride and report what you find.
That's all they are asking for.

Well parts of a beta are about that too....

I was beta for xbox live and a bunch of games on xbox live..
We got a game in the mail that was enabled for a short period of time.. You basically did bug reports and told how you liked the game. Some of those games were not popular or so buggy and never got released .

I also was for FFXI on the xbox.

But I think the question were odd this time around for ffxiv.
Usually the question are how much experience do you have in computers and networking etc. plus gaming experience.

Well im only a 2 or 3 month vet of ffxiv my first mmorpg but seasoned ffer.and in computers....well if it stops working I hit the monitor lol...the devs would probably want feedback from absolute n00b-salads with 0% exp in the game so see how it accommodates to them, I know when I started out I was like wtf am I doin. A mate gave me a bunch of gil n I went out n bought like cobalt armout n shizz ran out yhe front of ud hit s coblyn thinking I was a boss now and did 1 damage n nearly pooed my pants haha. Could be coz im lazy and impatient. ..

Each phase is beta is something like 1 to 3 weeks with a 2 week or so break in between phases.

I'm going from memory, if you take a look at the beta roadmap that's around in a few places here, it'll give you the real non-made up numbers.
