It's not a pet job like FFXI summoner. Arcanist will have carbuncle, summoner will "imbue carbuncle with the power of the summon" or something like that.

Well, the official page says:

Quote:
The beast tribes of Eorzea worship and summon forth beings known as primals, among which are Ifrit, Garuda, and Titan. Yet what is a god to one man is a demon to another, for the city-states of Eorzea see these beings as a grave threat to their collective survival.

In times immemorial, there lived mages who had not only the power to summon the primals, but also the means to transmute the primals' essences, thus binding them to their will. Known simply as summoners, the existence of these men and women and their arcane art have been all but lost to the ages.

So this makes me think we will be able to summon the actual primals and not just work through Carbuncle after we reach Summoner status. I wish they would give is a little Summoner teaser...

In time... in time.

Negatory. We've had a few JP translations to clarify this:

Quote:
GameWatch - Job Summoner where you can summon spirits will also be implemented?
YoshiP - We will eventually implement. Pet users are star in MMORPG class. For example carbuncle is a summon a summner can call however “Ifrit” or “Garuda” or “Leviathan” or “Odin” are gods.

Quote:
「シヴァ」や「ラムウ」はどうですか?
吉田氏: あの2体も蛮神の予定です。特にエレメンタル四元素+光闇あたりに関しては確定で蛮神かなと。
GameWatch - How about Shiva or Ramu?
YoshiP - Those two are also planned as gods. Mainly 4 elements and Light/Dark are confirmed gods

Quote:
Arcanist and Summoner
It’s the same as what I posted in the relevant thread regarding both of them, but I’ll just add the little comments and teases they made.
Please look forward to the auto-attack motion. (Throws the book?)
The players will be able to craft the books and they will have recipes. The class that crafts them is of course… can’t tell right now.
Summoners will not have carbuncle as a pet, but they’ll be using the primals as their source of power. However, not the primals themselves but they’ll use only a part of a primals strength. “A pet that the primals power dwells in” are Matsui’s exact words if I wasn’t mistaken.
The summoners will be able to borrow the power of 4 primals (this is what is planned till now, and could be expanded later on). The ones that are confirmed right now are Ifrit, and Garuda.

I mean it's very vague, and we might just be summoning mini little version of them, like the Minions, but it would disappoint me if the only pet class turned into a basic spell caster at job level.

Since the beast hoardes get equal dibs on primals why not have access to the... Lets say more inherently evil summons. Tiamat(the ffxi incarnation over ff8's) or maybe Griever.

One of my favourite ever summons (doomtrain) would probably be the least likely to ever be implemented but one of the most entertaining.

I don't see them making a Summoner class without allowing us to physically use the summons... I mean, Yoshida's campaign is to bring back a lot of Final Fantasy icon's and mechanics that drew players into the Final Fantasy series, and there has never been a Summoner who couldn't summon huge *** beasts of awesome to wallop on their enemies in an over exaggerated way. I don't think he would just give us a Squirrel and be like "But you can put essence of another avatar into him!! Enjoy!" That would take the entire joy out of the class.

It sounds like from that translation that the summons are just going to be sprites, maybe elementals, or god forbid, repurposed monsters. Hopefully these creatures that represent the summons are at least original creatures with a bit of character, not generic pets with elemental powers. That would be really disappointing.

I don't see what's so hard about just having Summoner summon the beast like they do in every other FF, but maybe they're saving something like that for Limit Breaks.

Sounds to me like gods will be like VII summons where you cast Ramuh and it's like a lightning spell but Carby is a pet like summon.

It seems to me like you'll get a spell effect for the 4-6 "main" ones that they add, but for others you'll have some sort of creature pet. e.g., a bomb that channels Ifrit's power. Not unlike the Spirits in XI.

I'm hoping for a good blend that lets us make decisions, but doesn't require us to miss the beauty of the scenery as we fight.

Personally while I don't necessarily want to have a ton of abilities, I'm generally of the mind that more is better... if they're actually balanced and useful. If they're going for strategic play, the harder it is to choose the right decision, the more challenging the game is, the more potential it has to be fun.

Games where you just rotate through the same actions over and over every battle get boring fast.

But swing swing swing WS is way too simplistic as well.

Jesus, I never looked before, but I didn't realize that Rift has over 5000 abilities. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the vast majority of them are either statistical bonuses or direct damage/dps abilities? Then a sprinkle of healing and crowd control covers 99% of the abilities? That about right?

From the artwork and tidbits, I presumed that you would do a similar thing, like open a rift-like portal where ifrit comes out partially and cast some spell and goes away.

Again, summoner is supposed to be 14s first pet job, so I doubt they would overlook the pet part, but he did say something to the tune of "it seems silly to see everyone walking around with their own personal Ifrit."

Yeah that's what I meant, you would see them obviously while they cast their spells. Lesser primals like Carbuncle you can control more directly and command.

I don't disagree. At the same time; I don't entirely agree that it would be that weird, but that may be because I'm used to FFXI. Picturing XIV's Ifrit strolling down a path next to me does look a little funny.

This system (wherein the Summons come out, do their handy work and then disappear) would be fine by me. I do hope that we would be able to keep Carbuncle out during it so that when soloing, we have a tank on deck. We all know how paper thin summoner classes tend to be. I would also hope that they also add more pet Avatars beyond Carbuncle. But that's really only because I like having options, and I don't particularly like Carbuncle.

Since he called it a pet class I'm sure there will be some primals that can stay out an be commanded.

Well I read a couple things on the intarwebs saying that Carbuncle is going to have 2 separate "stances", one being spell casting, and one being tanking. If that's true, then I'd like to see some additional options on some other smaller Eidolon's.

Wint, use your magic connections to ask Yoshida to produce a Summoner demo video. Then we can stop guessing!

It'd be awesome if you could have multiple summon pets eventually, maybe even make it so that they have to "get along" elementally or they can't be used in unison.
