Depending on the type of phone you have, you can get the chat apps on them now anyway. I usually run vent/mumble on one of my other PCs because my FFXIV PC is for that game only and nothing else. I looked into getting the app on the tablet as well, but I'm unsure as to it's reliability. I don't really see ps3 users having an issue because they can simply just use their laptops to voice chat.

Not everyone playing on a PS3 has a spare laptop lying around. I would like to have some sort of voice chat available for PS3, but I think way back when, Tanaka said it just couldn't be done. Of course that was three years ago. A mobile app would be very nice though. I think you could hit way more people with a smart phone they could dedicate than a lap top. Short of that, I think an integrated keyboard/controller like I used to have would be really nice. I know Sony makes a mini-pad that you can clip on to a standard controller, but I don't know if that would really have all the functionality you would need.

I'm seeing Ventrilode and TeamSpeak 3 in the app store for $5 each. Are those the apps you're talking about?

I believe so.I know for sure that the TeamSpeak one work fine. I had a corpie (guild/clan member w/e) in EvE Online that was at work and he logged in TeamSpeak 3 via his phone. So yea it works great. The only drawback it had though at least for him, was that his battery was depleting quite fast.Don't know if it was his phone's fault though or a general problem.

I messed around with DCUO and their intergrated voice chat wasn't too bad. However people leaving it on unintentionally left me having to mute my tv a lot of the time. Then there was just offensive drunks in pick up 8 man raids. Put me off voice chat unles it's intelligently designed (selective muting/time out)

I enjoy voice chat when people have the courtesy to either use Push-To-Talk or mute their mic when they are chewing, coughing, yelling at their children, or watching a movie (Or anything else like this.)

DCUO is a prime example of Voice Chat gone wrong. In every single group you join, there is some dumbass with his mic on, chomping away on something, TV blaring in the background, and will not listen or respond to anyway via voice or chat log. This seriously makes me want to punch a baby.

In a push to talk atmosphere, you have to take the time to press some sort of button to acknowledge that you want to be talking to these people. This takes away nearly all Voice Chat issues. (Except for people who apparently talk with their mics inside of their throats.)

As far as Keyboard/Controller goes, I enjoy gaming with a controller. Maybe it just feels more like gaming to me, I don't know, I just enjoy it more when I have a controller in my hand. But I like communicating via a full sized keyboard, the smaller ones just get me into trouble. I liked Kachi's idea of putting the controller on some sort of stand so that you don't have to put it down whenever you want to type... That is my only gripe with controller game-play, but it's not enough of a burden to turn me off of using one.

This is my single biggest pet peeve with voice chat, and I think it's really down to ignorance.

I mean think about it; you'd NEVER eat while talking to someone on the phone. You just wouldn't do that, because it'd be disgusting. So why then, do people do it over voice chat?

I had a raid leader who did this every night, and it seriously made me want to stop raiding (I was very new to raiding at the time, so this was an early impression of the environment for me). I'm glad I didn't, but it was a near thing, and all because this guy could never manage to swallow between hitting his vent key.

I agree 100%, it's the most disgusting thing to listen to someone chew and swallow over a mic. Even thinking about it makes me cringe. So gross... take off your mic and eat, then come back and talk to me.

On the other hand, you said you were running a mumble server on a raspberry pi. How much bandwidth and processing does it actually take?

The thing with mics is that for me at least, they take away some of the games "magic". That is why when i am playing this kind of games i prefer not to have a mic on at all times. I want to log in the ts server or vendrilo or w/e when i have to go in raid and orders must be given in voice chat. With that been said since i ve been playing EvE online and voice chat is a much needed element there. In most good corporations well organized etc you wont see much typing all the talk will be on voice comes for many reasons that are not needed here.

With that been said. If you are playing and you WANT to have a mic you don't always have to turn it on.If you are playing on a pc or even in a ps3 with a keyboard on your lap as many said, you just put a hotkey to activate your mic and thats it. Its the "push to talk" button all voice programs have. Since i doubt everyone needs to talk all the time, when you need to say something you press the button say it and then release it.

I used to not know anything about voice programs even if i used them a bit in wow for raids but once i got into EvE online i learned a whole lot of things about em. And the fastest way for people in your own fleet/corp/alliance to kill you was for you to talk or make any sound on your mic during an "operation".

I couldn't say bandwidth wise, I have Time Warner's wideband internet (30 down 5 up) with no limits.

Processor wise next to nothing, the Pi handled 20+ people just fine.

Is there a mobile app for Mumble?

Is there a bluetooth thingy you can put on your PC so that I could have a wireless headphone/mic connection to my PC running Mumble in the background?

Just trying to imagine how I can make it work. Thanks :)

Yes mumble has a mobile app. I use wireless PS3 headphones, so I imagine you could find a bluetooth dongle that would connect to a bluetooth mic (the PS3 headset is friggin awesome and worthe every penny btw).

Yes, there is a free mumble app for android. I have that 99 dollar 7.1 ps3 bluetooth headset. It also works with pc as long as you set it as the default communication device.

I'll see if I can sneak that purchase past the wife lol

I did find the Mumble app in the App Store and it's free :)

Voice chat is one of the big hurdles I was afraid of not being able to get over when I started doing endgame stuff on PS3. It's really good to know that I'll at least be able to use my phone to make it work if nothing else. Thanks again for all the pointers!!

Yes, get it. Damn the wife! I haven't been on ps3 much lately till MG Rising, due to spending time on the 360. So I haven't been using the headset much. I'm almost certain you can charge it and talk at the same time. It's the standard usb charger that the ps3 controller uses as well. You can charge it on your pc while you use it. Something the old ps3 bluetooth headsets couldn't do. I have 2 of the older ones charged so I can switch between the 2 of them for the long gaming sessions. Smiley: smile
Those headsets are also compatible with phones so yes, you can the use them as head pieces for the smartphone/table apps. The downside however, is there is a slight delay with using those to chat. (think of those funny news reporter delay jokes Smiley: lol ) You'll get better performance from a wired phone headset (similar to the ones iphones give you for free)

P.S.
They're REALLY comfortable!

I like the faux 7.1 surround sound they give, and I believe they've lowered the price on them from $100. Regardless they're great for not only gaming but listening to music and tuning out everything else. I'm very happy with them.
