Well, since at the moment i have no games to play, i was thinking in trying out some of the MMO's out there that i haven't touched.

Now i am currently downloading the trial for ff xi but i want to hear your opinion as well. Does it worth it to start it now to keep myself busy until ARR comes? Or i am better off with something else. The price for all the expansions etc is really cheap in steam (20 euros) so the price is not an issue. So let me know guys should i try it or not?

It wouldn't hurt to try it. I think it was over a year or so ago I started from scratch. I got a few jobs up to 75 I think, been a while since I played. Had a group of friends playing, so that helped.

I tried to start playing again about a year ago... it was honestly tough. There was no one to party with at low levels, and it just wasn't the same.

Yea that is what i am afraid of. There is no one around to play it with and since its an aged game i doubt ill find a lot of people at low lvls.

So i am guessing WHM is out of the question for me at the moment.

Since the game has been around a while, there are ways to level up faster to reach the higher level content. Once you start getting up there, I'm sure you'll start running into more people. Try looking around on the XI side of ZAM and see if there are people who are willing to help.

Actually there is a expansion pack coming out the 27 th
http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/adoulin/index.html

It has breathed new life into the game and it is busy again.
Leveling is extremely easy because people now party GOV instead for book exp... You can go from gov party to gov party and level from 0 to 99 in a week and still get skillups. Gov is fast and sometimes hard to learn the job though.

I think now is a great time to start FFXI... Since FFXIV is down allot of those people have come back too and are behind trying to catch up which means they are now leveling their lower level jobs too....

Well start on Asura if you can, I'll try to get on and add you to our shell if you want. I'm not on a lot, but I can be on to help with things if we plan it ahead of time.

If you are serious about playing, I would do this. I'm not playing at the moment but I am a part of this shell and I know we have a few people who still play quite a bit and are willing to help.

Just started on the trial a few days ago. Already have 3 30s and having a blast. The game will always hold a certain charm for me.

My only word of warning is I (along with many others) probably look at XI with rose coloured glasses. Objectively, it hasn't aged very well... the UI sucks, the graphics are dated (though the art style is great), and combat can be slow at times... I guess my biggest problem overall with the game is/has always been the amount of gear one is "required" to have in order to be a "good" player. In a lot of cases we're talking about stuff that's 5% better of what's commonly available... but if you don't have it people (in my experience) people will look down on you/exclude you from events.

So my approach this time around is different, just playing the game to have fun and progress through the upcoming expansion. Bottom line is that there will always be better gear so there's no sense in stressing over getting that extra 1%... as long as I can get the story stuff done I'm fine.

And that's really where the strength of XI is: the story. Fantastic, engaging, and complex a lot of the plot lines give the best FFs a run for their money. If I had to rank the stories of what I completed prior to quitting the first time I'd say: CoP, ToAU, WoTG, Zilart, and the default. SoA (the new one) looks promising, hence why I returned.

For a new player there's 10 years of content to get through. You're not going to find better value for your $40 entry/$15 a month, especially if this is all new. If you decide to dive in I suggest you grab the Seekers of Aldouin Complete Edition-- all expansions and the new one for $40 (plus 30 days of free playtime).

The community is by far the best of any MMO I've ever played to date. People are friendly and helpful for the most part, and very welcoming of newbies. I think the entrenched player base understands that without new players the game/community gets stagnant.

Oh, and I just started on Ragnarok... the name is Onionpunch so look me up (you can't send /tells when on trial though). Same goes for anyone on here!! I can't believe how many new people I've seen running around in the past few days.

So my advice is take it slow and enjoy the game for the things that have aged well, like the music, the atmosphere, the story, and the people. Also... make sure you run the game through the Windower program-- it allows you to tweak the graphics through the registry quite easily, and has some great add-ons. Also... google is your friend when it comes to the finer details of improving the gfx.

Hope to see you in Vanadiel. :)

Yeah, if you want to get something out of it, I suggest completing missions for most of the expansions. The stories are still good and usually beatable with smaller, less dedicated groups now that the level cap is 99.

I finally finished Wings of the Goddess with a trio of folks. We had a blast and since we were all veterans we were capable of using our job combos to speed up travel (at the expense of a little battle firepower.)

I never quit XI. I've been playing for eight years now and I never run out of things to do. I just finished 85 Daurdabla (!!!!) and now I'm staring at the prospect of killing the NM Apamadak 75 times for his horns to get it to level 90... and then 1500 heavy metal plates oh god...

I must say that the log in/registration is one of the most complicated ones i 've seen so far in an MMO. Still trying to login in playonline but it keeps saying incorrect id or w/e. But ill keep trying, since i just got a cup of coffee.

Success!! I managed to log in now, i just wait for the updates to finish finally.

Any recommendation about what class should i start with?
#16 Mar 20 2013 at 11:56 AM Rating: Excellent
Whatever floats your boat, you get access to Red Mage, Black Mage, White Mage, Warrior, Thief, and Monk to start. Mage jobs never go out of style although WHM is a bit tougher to level first, Monk is a lot of fun even in end game, really you can't go wrong with any except maybe RDM, those aren't feeling the love these days Smiley: frown

Alright yea, i am not gonna touch WHM at the moment even if i love healing. I am thinking either BLM or a warrior. I think ill try warrior though.

It still downloading by the way, no idea when it will finish it says " time remaining : Unknown " somehow that scares me.

First it has to run through the version check of your files and make a list, then it will download the files that need updating. I think you can expect anywhere from 4-8 hours, depending on your speeds. I remember the last time I did a full version download from scratch it was done a lot faster than I was expecting, but it was still pretty slow.

Well hm, my speed is not at its best to be honest. The trial client that is 2gm took me 1 hour and 45 minutes to download. And since i see the update is at 2% now it will take sometime as well yes.

So we will see how this goes!

I just went back to FFXI as well. I think it's a pretty good time to start since it has a new expansion out soon, and it's pretty easy to level now (thanks to GoV and Abyssea), i got a couple jobs to 50s in just a week, but yeah, it's hard to learn the jobs cuz the level up is too fast, but in general, it's still a good game to play after a decade, graphics still good, music is great, story is great, except the battle is a little bit slow to me now. And you might see some good old buddies too :)

lol'd with the registering part, for me i tried the password so many times, failed every time of coz^^ so end up calling SE support to reset it

Have fun with the game!

You could also hit up Abyssea La Theine Plateau for experience. that's pretty much where everyone goes for the quick EXP now a days, at least on Titan (where I migrated to from Sylph for my g/f). You can't really beat getting a job to 30 then getting it to 99 in a day or two there. I don't guess I really suggest it to new players and their first job but it is there. Be sure to look into Abyssea stuff when you hit 30 so you can at least start getting your time stones saved up.

I would also strongly suggest that you level up Beastmaster. They buffed the class a great deal and the jug pets are very strong now. BST is able to solo a much larger portion of the game's content than any other class and is very accessible. I was able to solo everything in CoP other than the parts that need two people with Beastmaster or Puppetmaster. Plus they are very good in Sea and Abyssea.

I tried playing again after 5 years when I met my girlfriend. We played for about 4 months over this past summer and it was alright, but it still takes far too much to get one of the 3 best weapons. However they did make a huge set of really good and easy to get ones as well. I leveled a bunch of jobs to 99 and finally pimped out my Puppetmaster, something I always wanted to do. After a while though you start to realize that you still need a group of 5 or 6 people to get higher end gear. We were playing with some of her old LS mates but they only really ever did stuff for themselves. She never did get the items for her Empyrean dagger for DNC that she wanted because we couldn't duo it with our current job combos.

However I also don't have a game to play and am mildly considering playing again until ARR comes out. Maybe I'll see if i get an invite to Phase 2 first.

Black mage is an incredibly fun job, and it's back in favor again. It can be a bit pricey to level up as a first job, though, as you have to buy a lot of spells.... White mage is a bit cheaper, and also always in demand, but its firepower is pretty lacking compared to the XIV counterpart of CNJ.

XI more or less forces you to level up complementary jobs somewhat. (Yes, you'll even have to level RDM at some point, at least to level 49.) The upside is that you can switch jobs easily, and if you stick with the same basic group of jobs (generally clumped into light DD, heavy DD, and mages) a lot of the better gear will overlap. I'm a mage job specialist and most of them share the same rings and earrings (BLM is the only one with a totally unique gear set because it's pimped to the hilt. Even my main job bard shares earrings with WHM and RDM.)

If you're between WAR and BLM, I'd go with BLM. It's more fun by a wide margin.
