It's a good idea to take a few jobs to lvl 10ish to get a feel for combat. It will also give you a good idea of which job you might want to try first.
My first job in XI was RDM. Back then, it took me a year or so to get it to 75, but things are much different these days. RDM isn't really desirable at the moment, but i can give you a couple of good reasons why you might want to think about leveling it first.

1. RDM uses many WHM and BLM spells. Once you get them on your RDM, you wont have to get all of the spells for other mage jobs.

2. A 99 RDM will make soloing a lot of earlier content much easier for you, such as unlocking advanced jobs and doing missions. It has a pretty good survivability factor.

3. You will be able to reuse a lot of the gear you aquire on other jobs. Some low lvl gear for DD jobs, and most gear for other mage jobs.

Ultimately, how you play is up to you. I just wanted to share my thoughts. Good Luck!

I'm pretty sure that means we are all engaged in battle with you. Hopefully you drop some good loot!

I must say all this talk about jobs and skills and spells taken from other classes is making me nervous. I've never played something similar so i hope i can figure it out fast. :)

FFXI is the MMO that has made the most sense to me over the years, I always thought it was cut and dry, at least until end game and even then it's not terribly difficult. Let me know when you hit 30 and I'll help you unlock the advanced jobs.

It's really not that hard. In fact, many people are bored by the simplicity of it. You'll be fine.

The hardest thing to figure out is writing macros. You might want to consult a guide for that.

May be abit pre-emptive but at the rate of levelling these days. Don't pick solely lvl ing rdm, it just makes one of the level cap fights so much more hassle than it needs to be. (I assume since I left they havnt removed genkai)

You're new here, and you've already learned the most valuable lesson there is to know. You're gonna be just fine. Smiley: lol

I was mostly making a dumb joke.

I actually couldn't tell you if it's worth it now.

Pretty much anyone who played FFXI a lot during its glory days would tell you that they have great memories of it, but I really have no idea if it's still enjoyable today. the game has clearly changed a lot and obviously the community must be a lot smaller, and probably nonexistent at low levels. Tons of the community has every job maxed by now, I bet.

At any given time you can be one of twenty main jobs, and then once you unlock your "support job," you can strap on any one of the nineteen other jobs you're not currently wearing at half level.

What this does is give you access to the spells, job abilities, and traits of the second job, augmenting your primary job. For example, my primary job is usually bard, but I'm almost always wearing the subjob of white mage because it gives me access to healing, buffing, -na spells to remove status ailments, etc. At the level my bard is at I really only need to sing songs once every three minutes, but with BRD/WHM I can contribute a lot more to the overall battle.

When I'm playing solo or farming, I'll be a job combo such as black mage/red mage, or thief/dancer.

In group play, subjobs can be highly variable. BLM/BRD is popular in small Abyssea farming groups because the black main mage has access to the 8 most important bard spells in Abyssea farming. BLM/WHM is good when you're in a group without a white mage. BLM/RDM is preferred when there's a separate white mage and a separate bard, because RDM's trademark is self MP restoration (from the spell Refresh and the job ability Convert), and by strapping on a RDM support job, the BLM has access to those abilities and is much more self sufficient.

I went back to it for about a month. I quickly got to 99 BST, finished off Windurst, RoZ and CoP missions so I can finally say I finished the core storyline content of the game. I tried out Dynamis for the first time (solo) which I never got a chance to before and made a couple million to get some better gear, but I don't really find gear grinding rewarding... I mostly play for the nostalgia, adventure/immersion factor and overarching story, so I plan on pretty much wrapping up my FFXI career tomorrow upon completion of Apocalypse Nigh as I know the last CoP cutscene was the climax of the game of me and the rest will be a downslide into mediocrity from there.

I just don't have time (since my real life holidays are coming to an end) or enthusiasm for ToAU, WoTG or Abyssea. I guess I'll forever be stuck in the pre ToAU era mentally. Unfortunately I get this feeling that this sense of weariness is going to carry on over to ARR... perhaps I'm done with MMOs unless ARR has a fabulous story with characters I like, or until the genre really changes (eg. 3D virtual reality immersion and/or extremely rich sandboxing which aren't going to come from ARR obviously).

Ok this is turning into a noob fest on my part. But this is actually the first game ever to have such a hard time with the controls and figuring out what the heck is around me probably cause i try to use the keyboard instead of a gamepad? Its totally different from any other MMO i've played but i am in the starting town, for 30 min i already got lost and can't find out how to go for some xp or to try the fighting system >_<. I feel really bad here with my lack of brains.

I think Everquest was like that (which FFXI copied). Bring up the map if you have one and head for the gate.

If you are still having issues I'm willing to "newb" it up and roll a character on your server and assist you. I'll probably be up for at least another hour or more.
