I still don't understand the mechanicsFollow

So in FFXI, you would have main class, subclass. Easy to understand, yay.
FFXIV 1.0 we had Main class with all other classes as subclass and we get to pick and choose all abilities that we have unlocked.

How will 2.0 work with Jobs, Classes thing. So if i get my gladiator to certain level he becomes a paladin? or do i unlock the paladin class? Can we still use all skills from all other jobs as a paladin or what? I mean this is kind of weird since Paladins should get White Magic spells. Or will i need WHM class to have whm spells. I AM SO CONFUSED!

Well jobs aren't available in the beta yet, but I'm assuming they will work the same way as 1.0. I was able to use some of my CON spells on my ARC and GLA, so the sharing of abilities seems similar at least.

Here: Take a look at this chart with job prerequisites.

Once the prerequisites are fulfilled, (Assuming it's the same in 2.0) you can access the quest to unlock the appropriate job. Jobs are more powerful than classes and are more oriented for party play, with no cross-class/job ability allocation. Classes can have other abilities from classes equipped, and are better suited for solo play.

You cant use ALL skills from ALL classes. Only certain skills/abilities will be available. Just to give you an example: As a GLD you can't pick Cure II, since it reserved to CNJ only. I guess its going to be the same thing with THM spells, that only the tier 1 spells will be available for other classes.

Yes thank you, I forgot to mention this.

This thread covers the question -- and the debate surrounding the strange way jobs work -- quite nicely.

Think of Jobs as a Stance or Mode, not a class.

You level your class, Gladiator. Then, you turn on "Paladin Mode" to join a party or just because. In Paladin Mode you can wear AF armor and access new abilities, but lose access to others.

Once you complete the quest to "unlock" a job, you receive a job stone for that job along with the first of many job abilities. There is a slot in your equipment to "equip" that stone anytime you want to use that job and have acces to those abilities. When you equip your sword. You are automatically the gladiator with acces to all gladiator abilities but no paladin abilities. When you equip that paladin job stone, you become a paladin and have acces to all the gladiator abilities and also all the paladin abilities you have unlocked through the job quest line. Think of the class as a very loose/general role you may want to use. The job, once the job stone is equipped, is very specific for a role that may be used within a party.

/job changes you to and from your corresponding class to the job. If you're a level 34 Gladiator you can switch to and from your level 34 Paladin if you unlocked the job.

I loved this aspect of 1.0. I had a gladiator who was able to use the MP to cast things like fire and blizzard. And although it was not as strong as a cnj it was a great supplement to low TP.

So if jobs are a hybrid of classes, does that mean in a group setting there's support roles? I love the idea of having a class or job that maybe isn't a top damage dealer or a top healer but can help out by doing damage and then supplementing the healers in heavy damage situations.

Basically, is going to be a situation where some jobs provide support or auxiliary roles rather than straight damage, healing, or tanking?

Random anecdote. Back in WoW, way back, my hunter would have to do damage but would then also have to provide CC. Or even just kite, where my damage was irrelevant as long as I did the required crowd control. I miss that and am hoping for those support roles again

My memory is hazy, but so far bard (the job stemming from the archer class) is the only job that is truly a support job. I also recall several jobs having enfeebling abilities.

I agree with thayos. The only job that couldn't be considered DD, tank, or healer would be bard. It had subpar DD ability with subpar healing ability, but the songs were amazing when it comes to buffing party members and increasing their ability to do what they needed to do.

It is also implied that Summoner will be able to fulfill a support-ish role. I read that they are being given a wealth of DOT's and enfeebles.

SUBPAR!? I'll SUBPAR YOU IN THE FACE!

They were at least par.. it depended on the content, but I had great parses in Ifrit, Moogle, and Garuda (Garuda mainly because of the AOEs)

I appologize Louis. Perhaps it was just me then. When I think ifrit, I automatically think extreme mode. Perhaps I just sucked horribly at the ifrit fight until I learned how to do it properly during ifrit extreme hell. Bard was my main up until I helped fight ifrit extreme and then it unintentionally became dragoon. I can't really tell which one I like the most. I like the idea of being irreplaceable as a bard b/c every party needs a good bard, but I also like the idea of being a badass DD for ifrit and cutters cry. I ended up fully decking out my dragoon armor with triple melds and couldn't force myself to try and get gear for bard since my role at the time was mainly dragoon. lol I still went for bard relic first though. :) Man it sucked having to spirit bond that bow.

Oh no, you are right about Ifrit Extreme.

Bard was fairly good at Ifrit hard because you could stand safely, and solo kill a needle and then help the blms get the last one.

It was still the lowest at dmg, but I still found it respectable. I was always in the running with other DD's but still at the back.. Moogles were great because they were pretty squishy, but when it came to Nael Van Darnus or United We Stand, Bard definitely felt the drop off..

I the Van Darnus fight I found myself running around dodging attacks or recasting the song buffs on different groups of party members. I never really had much of an opportunity to do much DD. It wouldn't have amounted to much anyways since I only used artifact gear and ifrits bow. United we stand, I did much more DD, but my main purpose was still to just run around and make sure buffs didn't go out. I was perfectly ok with not being a high DD on bard. I thought I did more for the party with the buffs than my meager DD could ever do. I'd still take hate on the big machine once or twice every battle.

Ah! I see. Yeah, I had a few double melds with capped piety and dex and macro'd in the af gear based on which song I was casting. I had to disengage to do it but I liked it.
