With Internet Explorer? Push the game off a cliff?

I was just searching for some official wallpapers and there we go. Wish there were a few more though.

I agree that IE isn't the "coolest" but they still do have quite a bit of marketshare:

I was hoping one of our folks here could translate the page and give us a gist of what it's saying.

Every time I see something about IE market shares, it just floors me how many people use a sub-par browser because of sheer ignorance. Now granted, IE is considerably better than it was 5-10 years ago, but still. I also think those numbers become very skewed because I'd say the vast majority still using IE are people age 40+ who probably don't game or even know all that much about computing.

It's easy to have the bulk of marketshares when it comes pre-installed in almost all consumer and workplace PCs.

I think they're skewed because IE8 is the last IE that Windows XP can use, and a huge number of business are still on Windows XP (where I work is, although we have an upgrade plan for Windows 7 this year). I get to use Firefox and Chrome at work but I'm one of very few, almost everyone else has to use IE.

Also, some ******* web designers write code specifically for IE and won't let their sites display properly on anything else. It's less prevalent than in the IE6 days, but it still happens. I have converted most of my family to Firefox but they still tend to lapse back to IE.

People still do this? Smiley: oyvey

I think I would get laughed out of the office if I tried to design my code for how it looks in IE. Don't get me wrong, I preview in IE because I realize the sad truth of how many people still use it, but I would never design it specifically FOR IE. That's just so archaic and backwards.

Also when a lot of business computers are locked into IE like Sisyphus pushing his rock for all eternity.

Certain suites of web software, like Blackboard, does this (or did, I'm not sure if Blackboard is caught up to modern browsers or not).

There's quite a bit of business software that only works in IE. And it'll tell you that when you try to use it.

All the workstations I had to deal with in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait were all IE based and hoooooooooooorrible.

I guess I should feel lucky then that our company is past all that. I just wish there was 1 unified browser for everything. It's so incredibly frustrating designing an entire web template, only to have it work in Firefox and Chrome but be broken in IE because it's so outdated and configured poorly.

Yeah give me my MFC C++ any day, I don't envy web designers.

So Microsoft gives them the cold shoulder for Final Fantasy XIV and SE turns around and promotes the game with the logo of Windows 8 and Internet Explorer? Have they seem the decline of market share of IE and the numerous complaints about Windows 8, especially from devs who do not want to deal with the restrictions of the impending Microsoft app store? What's next, a Windows Phone helper app? A tiered licensing structure so you can play a laggy version of ffxiv on the cloud (paying for both the license and the subscription)?

Does this mean they will never offer the game on Steam?

Ugh why partner with Microsoft for anything when there are much better alternatives?

Pretty sure they won't be on Steam anytime soon, for reasons we have already beaten to death.

Windows 8 is not the nightmare that developers like Notch want you to believe, as long as you don't want your app in the app store. Regular apps run just fine in Windows 8.

Yea my fears are probably unfounded but it just doesn't seem like the best course of action to me. Microsoft is one of those companies that are notorious for anti consumer tactics and if it were me I wouldn't go that route and risk the damage to the image to a product that has as much on the line as ARR. If it were my decision anyway. It's probably best that I'm not running a multi million dollar company though.

I expect that if we were privy to everything that Yoshi and the other executives at SE are, we might have a bit more insight into why they do what they do.

Awesome art... I would be especially excited if they carried this form of artistic design into their next numbered series!

If I want cars and tall buildings I'll hop in my own and drive to NYC. I miss the steampunk/ victorian/ medieval designs of some of the earlier games.

Couldn't agree with you more.

When I said "Victorian" I was specifically referring to IX... There's something special about the decorum of the upper class during that particular time period. I felt like IX was able to capture the essence, while applying it's own unique flavor simultaneously. You were also strongly able to sense the haves from the have nots, which really brought the game alive.

Overall, I would say the lively atmosphere... and a story which didn't take itself too seriously are what was so brilliant about IX. I would love to see something like that again in the future, given the new graphics power systems provide... it could be something special.

IX was good indeed although I got stuck trying to beat the jump rope sequence early on....

Nobody I've met yet will agree but I personally thought that VIII was the best. It was the first one I ever played, I was young, and rented it from Blockbuster, and it changed my perception of what a game should be. The stories, the music, the card game, the (for it's time) amazing technology in the game. I loved it.

I loved all the FF's for one reason or another, VIII included. I should play that on my Vita again...
