It really just depends on how much you care about the picture quality and what not. 4-5 years ago I bought this i-inc (hanspree), 27 inch monitor for 180$ and it's been nothing but great for me. AOC also makes some pretty good bang for the buck monitors if you check out tigerdirect.com (.ca if in canada). Do I notice a difference in a higher quality monitor? Absolutely. Do I notice it if there's nothing else around it to compare it to? Not really.

These things are becoming like TV's, it's getting hard to differentiate them if they're all LED. Got my parents a 400$ 42inch LG LED for Christmas, and I honestly can't tell much of a difference in picture quality vs a higher end tv. The pricier ones definitely have more options and what not, but picture quality seems to be getting pretty damn good across the board.

The monitor I currently have is a 19'' 1440x900 Hannspree, I bought it off my friend's mom for $20 and it has been awesome (especially considering it is the first HD display I've owned. I think she bought 4-5 of them dirt cheap on Black Friday a few years back. I plan on giving it to my lady-friend once she is ready for me to build her a PC.

I think 5 ms is fine unless you've got money to burn for the 1ms.

I think about monitors the same way I think about speakers. Yeah, I could drop hundreds of dollars for some unparalleled uber experience. And I know that if I'm listening to $11 speakers, or watching stuff on a CRT monitor, I'm not going to enjoy the experience at all. However, I'm content to be in the happy medium. I spent $54 on my speakers, and $110 each on my dual monitors. They don't have the greatest specs.... but they work well and honestly even if I could detect the difference, I'd be hard pressed to quantify it.

The two monitors I'm looking at are $171 (5ms IPS panel) and $180 (1ms TN panel) so there isn't really much of a difference.

Well I settled on this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236305

It had the features I wanted, plus an extra audio cable and DVI to HDMI cable so I won't have to purchase either.

I also picked up a much needed 1TB Western Digital HDD and a Decently cheap 720p logitech webcam.

Spending another $300 on my rig hurts, guess I'm up to about $1400 total now. ARR better be worth it grrrr.

I've owned a couple pairs of Asus monitors and later sold them each time I upgraded (to more Asus). They've always been good monitors. Good decision

Yeah, ASUS seems to make quality products in the lower to mid price range, perfect for me.

Maybe Yoshi-P should give us a monitor review. No, seriously, could be interesting since he's actually trying all the monitors at the same time with same output on them all.

Well, I just got my monitor today. It's pretty awesome after some tweaking, might have to do a bit more later tonight. I accidentally locked the buttons on it and had to figure out how to unlock them... fun stuff XD. I had a bit of screen tearing in Borderlands 2, but I turned on Triple Buffering in the AMD Catalyst Control Center and that seemed to fix it.

I get screen tearing on many games. I usually set Nvidia Control panel to Vsync on at all times. Fixes any issues as well. Glad you are liking your monitor.
