I guess my question is this: Out of all the jobs in FF history, with their varying levels of utility and popularity, why would SE choose to "surprise" us with SCH??

because...

because it's far more popular and important than Thief or Ninja?

not convinced?

Maybe it'll be used as another healer. If everyone levels their WHM to cap there won't be any healers for anyone to go through any content - having another healing job would help out with that.

The balance of "Discipline of War" to "Discipline of Magic" is WAY off.

Yoshi did say he wanted more mages.

Also, Blms and Whms use both staffs and wands (though they are much different in design) It's possible, but still feels weird to choose Sch over Rdm..

True that, Red Mage is a staple of the series and I would love to play one in XIV.

Yeah, I am still holding out against hope that we get a true melee red mage that goes Fencer > Red Mage.

Really, I just want to be a fencer with a frilly shirt...

ADD:

This could be a good sign though, meaning they are adding another healer now, so Rdm won't be a poor-mans Whm and actually be a spellblade.

Damm i have always wanted a spellblade class like in FFV... If they could find a way to make a combo class, like a Blkmg casting fira on a warriors sword, and when the warrior hits an enemy they get bonus dmg, like VIVI and Steiner.
