We have mentioned the Arc the lad series

Really? I must have missed it.

Growlanser is an epic series, i really wish they would release the earlier titles stateside, but their latest release was on the PSP: Growlanser wayfarer of Time. Check it out, is a very good entry into the series.

I have, it's pretty good. Growlanser 2 remains my favorite there though even if the voice acting can be....unfortunate....at times, it's still an excellent game. Also it has a New Game+ feature done very well. It's pretty satisfying to walk up to a boss you only killed by the skin of your teeth the first time and just casually take his shoes, daring him to say something about it.

Since no one has mentioned these yet...

Mother (Earthbound) 3. You can get a ROM and a full English translation. Just as good as the first (well, the second one technically- for SNES).

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma series. Especially Terranigma, awesome game!

And seriously, no love for Shadow Madness (PS1)? "There will be death".

Mother 3 as good as Mother 2? While I respect your opinion, I can't agree! I know they're both fairly linear, but the 3rd Mother just seemed to take you around from place to place... and there weren't even any good cities to explore!

Hopefully I will be able to play FFXIV on PS3.

Anyway, you guys pretty much mentioned all my favorite RPGs except I didn't see a little known gem for PSP only called Jeanne de Arc. It's a strategy RPG, with an wonderful story.

Currently I'm playing Fire Emblem for the 3DS. I highly recommend this one too, but I have a long way to go.

Welcome back! Of FF Tactics, Fire Emblem, and Tactics Ogre which would you guys suggest? I've already beat Tactics... but I just found a patch that makes the game significantly harder... that may be worth a try?

This ongoing list is great. I've already added about 8-10 games to my "must play" pile... which is now so large I don't know if I'll ever get through them. I'd need to quit my job for 6 months and slog through them all, then hope they'd take me back...

If I had any time I would compile the list... it's definitely awesome to hear the games everyone enjoys. This thread definitely brings back so many good memories from growing up!

I think I've played Final Fantasy tactics over 100 times. Always going to be my favorite.

Tictacs. Ha!

The kids have been watching me play Ni-No-Kuni for the last couple months.

The art style and story telling is top-notch. Too bad the grindy battles slow down the pace.

I hope we get to the dragon soon. Need some fast transportation!

I didn't see anyone mention it so I'll add Shining Force II to this list.

If you liked OGBMOFQ you will like Ogre Battle 64. Oh also 2 must try games, are for the GBA: Super Robot Wars Original Generation 1 & 2

Also for the Snes: Treasure of the Rudras. FFVI Graphics, with a very interesting magic system.

Has this thread evolved from 'your favorite RPG' to 'just name every RPG you've ever played.' It seems that we are pretty much naming games we played when we were younger - hard to imagine people have so many favorites.

Anyone remember the Y's series? The SNES title was pretty good. I believe it was Y's 3. I played that

I think it just means there are a lot of great RPGs out there.

Lufia 2 was okay, but I liked Lufia 1 much better.

Others I liked: Lunar 2, Breath of Fire 3, Final Fantasy IX, Wild ARMs 3, Chrono Trigger, a lot of the same as you guys I suppose.

Let's face it... many hold the opinion that the golden age of the RPG is gone.

I personally believe the RPG story was told better via the spectrum of the sprite rather than the polygon.

I second this notion. Companies now are too focused on flashy graphics and not enough on story or unique gameplay elements. There are certainly gems in the past 5 years, but out of my top 20, only 2 have come from the current generation of systems. That's based on my opinions obviously, but I feel like a good amount of gamers who have been playing since the 8-16 bit days tend to feel this way. Maybe it's just nostalgia... I dunno.

I feel that people are more interested in the 'new and shiny' and lack the attentions span to invest in a story with multiple plots and twists, or character development, hence why games are about graphics and details of the mundane features rather than something unique.
Or most of us have hit that age where everything was better when we were younger.

Also, has anyone mentioned Breath of Fire series? With the fishing mini game!

Many have, and it's an excellent series. Aside from Final Fantasy and the 2 Chrono games, it's easily my favorite series. Fishing minigame was fun, but it excelled with it's storyline, dragon transformation system, and general gameplay. Oh, and building your own town in 2-4 was pretty fantastic.

Oh hell speaking of building your own town how about Dark Cloud 1 & 2. I've played through #2 many times.

The saddest I've ever been to beat a video game was when I finished Dark Cloud 2, I didn't want it to end. Would love to see a new entry someday.

Absolutely. Dark Cloud 2 is an awesome game. Aside from just the town building, the randomized dungeons were great. It made my top 20 list. Even the first was fun, but the second was great.

Agreed! I felt the same way. It was basically the only cell-shaded style game that I really loved. If they made another one, I would buy it no questions asked.

Yes, I loved the Golden Sun games! I played the first one of the GBA and I was hooked right away. I've been meaning to get back into them, just haven't had the time.

I beat the first one and thought it was okay. At the time it was among a very small selection of JRPGs for the DS, and I think a lot of its success stems from that fact. As an RPG, it's not bad, but fairly generic.

Edit: Was Mother translated into english? I seem to now remember they may have released it, but I can't remember

I do know that Mother 3 was translated by Starmen.net guys and it's awesome. I own the GBA game but it's impossible to play without reading.

Mother 3 was pretty good... I wonder how much of me just wanted to like it because it was the new Earthbound?

I just thought it got away from some of the things that made Mother 2 special.

Also, there is a team making Mother 4 lol... again it's a fan game. But it's not some piece of crap thrown together. They've been working on it for about 4 years now, and it's absolutely amazing to see the quality. It's difficult to imagine a group of people with no corporate funding can create something so amazing. If anyone is interested in taking a look let me know and I'll send you a link.

Edit: It's done by some of the people over at starmen.net, the same group that did the Mother 3 translation. Earthbound players are F***ing hardcore.

I really wanted to love Mother 3 and recapture the feeling of Earthbound, but it just didn't do it for me, and my two younger brothers beat the game to a pretty lukewarm reception as well. I think part of what makes Earthbound great is the raw novelty of it (and the player's guide, of course), which is definitively impossible to duplicate. Hopefully I'm wrong, but Mother 3 wasn't the game to prove it.

The player's guide... I probably spent as much of my time being fascinated flipping through the pages of that guide as I did playing the game. You couldn't have said it better, definitively impossible to duplicate.

Do you remember the scratch and sniff on the back?
