Is it just me, or does it look like they've made the world even bigger than it was before? I know they still have the general areas like east, west, north, and south parts of each major area (la noscea, thanalan, black shroud), but it looks like they've taken those and expanded them into something much larger and much more lively and vibrant. I feel like I've missed out on a lot by not participating in p2. :(

Also, Wint, did you happen to come across the big snowy area when you had a chance to play in the areas outside of the black shroud? At first, I thought maybe the salt flats was the snowy area, but after watching the video again, I'm more under the impression it's in La Noscea.

Correct, it's basically on the beach in La Noscea, there is some historical significance to it from 1.0 but I can't remember what.

No snowy areas that I encountered, but they could easily add them later. I got to explore (beyond what the Phase 1 and 2 betas can see) La Noscea, Thanalan, and Uldah.

Seems like more (just from Gridania), but it feels you cover more territory in less time as compared to 1.0.

I think it has to do with how the maps are designed, in 1.0 it was a big copy pasted world with little life in it, now they have added life to the maps, so you actually take notice of the world, and it helps the game feel bigger to a degree.

I felt like gridania was bigger..but. The characters also run faster in 2.0 also even without sprint.

I guess you can do that in Gridania. Not too sure about it. Was just covering my own ***.

You're fine Smiley: thumbsup

I think Ostia's right, but wow what a difference a little environmental interest does for a game.

Actually the rate of travel is really what made it hard for me to go back to XI, XI seems so slooooooooowww compared to XIV Smiley: laugh

There WILL be another ronfaure! It was best in retrospect and after experiences had taken place. No there will not be that particular melody but Im optimistic 2.0 will deliver an identical experience.

Actually, visually, the spot in The Black Shroud reminded me immensely of the area right outside KRT. Anyone else see the similarity?

There was one zone that looked almost like an outdoor dungeon that DuoMaxwell keeps asking about. It was a canopy of trees though so not quite the same. Would love to see something like KRT in XIV as well.

If I couldn't get a Tele or warp I used to hitch hike (autofollowing someone) while I made dinner. I think people complained , though never about me, so I stopped. Travel was definitely arduous.

I think the insane amount of traveling required in XI was what originally made me want to become a White Mage. I didn't think I'd enjoy it for more than the utility. Little did I know...

This is becoming my overall problem with XI now, everything seems slower. The game has aged well, looks decent, especially with the proper registry edits, but...everything is starting to feel extremely sluggish and slow compared to every other MMO out there. It's obviously to be expected for such an old MMO, but sometimes I wish they'd take some of that profit and do some re-tooling for the PC version.

I know reprogramming that game would probably cost a fortune which is why they'd never do it, but it's a nice pipe dream to have.

*cough* FFXIV 2.0 *cough*

I think their new flagship MMO is upon us.

Oh I'm for sure moving on to XIV, but I still think XI could have some new life breathed into it from an engine overhaul. I'm realistic though, SE is probably happy with the steady stream of money XI is still making them, so why change it?

It does make's a huge difference, in 1.0 we had huge zones, far bigger than the ones seen as of yet in 2.0, yet there was little to nothing in them, just monsters and useless places, in 2.0 the maps are smaller, but so much fuller of life, and camps etc etc. That the zones feel as big as those in 1.0 with out being as big, i found gradinia myself far more enjoyable in 2.0 than in 1.0.

In 1.0 the zones were seamless so it seemed that they were big but really...I dont think so.

The thing is...with varied zones you get a sense of space that you just don't get with "vastness."

For example when you drive through the desert, after the initial expanse, it becomes very, very boring to drive through.

When you experience varied locales, with identifiable land marks, over and over again, you feel like you've covered a lot more space than you actually have. That's why I loved FFXI's zones.

Going from desert to snow to forest, just makes the world seem bigger. 1.0 had huge areas, but it all looked the same. ARR is a great improvement in this regard.

Also there are better uses of height and actual space, with landmarks, elevators, and other things I've seen.

Lastly, the more varied the world is, the more likely I'm able to excuse things like fast(er) travel but that's another discussion.

i.e., to put it tritely and succinctly, realistic doesn't necessarily mean fun or interesting.

You just want it to be realistic enough that the person can suspend disbelief.

Can anyone catch me up on how zones work now? I've only recently become interested in the game after over a year of not even thinking about it, but I remember way back when that they said the zones were maybe changing from persistent zones (with invisible zone changes like WoW maybe?) in the original FFXIV to actual zoning out/zoning in like FFXI or many of the older MMORPGs had. Is that the new reality?

Yes but it's very fast, and your HUD stays on screen while zoning so no more losing what funny thing your LS member said while zoning Smiley: nod

Nice! I wasn't going to complain...I was all for the idea if it would get us away from those huge, boring copy pasted zones that we had to endure on initial launch.

I've adapted to it pretty quickly, it really is painless and the zone sizes are still pretty huge really.
