A19: Scholar will be implemented for release as the 9th job! Look for details on scholar at E3!

I am curious because they answered the question about a new healer as "there might be a new healer job in the future" or something like it. This was after SCH was announced, I wonder if SCH actually won't be healing in ARR or if they just didn't want to reveal anything about SCH before E3.

I hope not. I wish people would give up the branching job theories and just be satisfied by an entire new class and job. 1:1 for now. It might be more viable after a massive raise in the level cap though.

But it isn't is it? According to the site you need one class at 30, and another at 15 before unlocking jobs... so 2:1 ?

Seems like it would be easier with 2:1 or 3:1 because the devs could add more jobs without having to add base classes. Also, one could simply jump right into the new job (assuming prerequisites already met) without needing to level a class one doesn't necessarily want to play.

If there's a 1:1 ratio, then two classes both using books would be very confusing.

Nah they'll just state the requirement on it, which class it's for. No more confusing than THMs and CNJs each having a 2H "staff" or 1H "wand". For now I like the idea of a new class though, I'd like to see more variety before we start pairing off similar jobs.

I suppose, but, I don't know.

I think we need more information on what exactly Arcanist is and how it plays. We know it gets Carbuncle, but...what else? That might explain or clear up how it evolves into the job.

Excuse my very strong thoughts on the subject of Scholar branching from Arcanist, but here is my wall-o-text:

- "They didn't announce a class." The "announcement" was basically "So, about Sch.. 'Yes, we have sch, more at E3." There was no fanfare, no balloons, and definitely no info. It makes no sense to take the games 1 pet job and make it branch into Sch

- Whm and blm already share weapons. Their Relics are both Staves.

- Scholars can just use Grimoires, Smn uses Tomes.

- The job system is complex enough as it is, without mixing in that 1 and only 1 class can branch off. Think about it from a new player perspective, splitting jobs is somethign that makes sense down the line, to an established and knowledgable player-base who wants more diversity.

- Additionally, they want more jobs for us to level. Timesinks.

- Think about the job from a LORE perspective. They gave an example of a job that could split:

Glad > PLD or DRK

This makes sense. You embrace the path of dark or light. But how would the Arcanist plotline go?

"Oh you have master the arcane art of summoning carbuncle, go forth and learn to tap into the power of the greater primals!"

Awesome. Not so awesome for scholar though.

For 35 levels, you are not a scholar, or anythign resembling one. This is the story you follow:

"You have mastered the art of summoning! Now, go forth and abandon your ability to summon and master the art of studying sh*t and read enemy weaknesses with SCAN!"

- Summoner/Scholar would be forced, and contrived. Bard vs Ranger, YES. Pld vs Drk, YES. Scholar to summoner? no.

- LASTLY, they have not finalized what weapon Arcanist/SMN will use. They can easily use a different weapon. The box art shows them weaponless. I know it was previously said they would use a book, but things can change and in the lore of 1.0, Arcanist NPC's (Both the guy in the GC story and the guild in 1.0 used this steam-punky stave.

Here is a picture of a GM, gears as an Arcanist

He is also an Arcanist

TL;DR: Scholar will get it's own class.

isn't summoner the 8th job?

seems kind of odd they would even say anything about SCH, since the game releases in 3 months and as far as we know, won't be out for the launch. Maybe they will surprise us though with a reveal right before the game comes out lol.

There's some flawed logic here. It may not have been confirmed by the dev team what Arcanist would use during initial development of ARR. But what we have been shown was the announcement of Arcanist and Summoner at the same time, both of which are holding a book.

Link of Arcanist holding book.

You're also assuming the Scholar can scan. FFXI's iteration of SCH has it as a hybrid of being WHM and BLM. We don't know FFXIV's role for Scholar. We do know that Arcanist is a debuffer. Would Summoner become a debuffer as well? Or would Scholar take the debuffing element from Arcanist in its evolution?

TL;DR: We don't know what will happen. We can only speculate.

Ha, the scan was just a joke, and you're right in that we know nothing.

But this isn't like bard, which is the largest leap in class to job. You are taking a pet job and completely eliminating the pet aspect.

You have to assume that Arcanist will have PET abilities, as it does have carbuncle. We also know that Carbuncle is only summonable by Arcanist.

This leaves 2 options: Scholar will also summon something, or Scholar will have a handful of unusable abilities from Arcanist.

I guess the third option is that Acn has no pet abilities besides "Summon Carbuncle" which is highly unlikely.

Bayohne originally had the translation say it was 8th, then edited his post to point out SCH is 9th.

Don't mean to be a debby downer, and I must say I'm excited they are indeed adding new jobs... but I can honestly say there are about 10 other jobs I would have wished to see them add before scholar!

Although, I guess that's really nitpicking. Kudos to those who were big SCH fans!

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I think you're right... however, it should obviously be a dual wield job.

In one hand you use the yard stick... it's mostly for hitting the behinds of mobs who have behaved badly. Then in the other hand you could poke out some serious eyes with the geometrical compass. After that, you could draw really perfect circles... pencils to go in the ammo will probably stack in lots of 99. These can be crafted of course.

Seems like it would be easier with 2:1 or 3:1 because the devs could add more jobs without having to add base classes. Also, one could simply jump right into the new job (assuming prerequisites already met) without needing to level a class one doesn't necessarily want to play.

Edited, May 30th 2013 1:37pm by schneiderw

Easier isn't always good. Sounds very lazy to me. I've accepted and even appreciate the system. 1:1 just leaves room for more. It's why people keep saying strange things on the main forums. Musketeer>SCH, and even worse, MRD > SAM. It's like they're not even trying. Just sounds provincial to me. Ronin > SAM. Hell, Calculator > SCH (Doubtful, just an example, relax.) would be accepted by many. Since they've already chosen this path, they shouldn't take any developmental shortcuts, just because you don't want to level a new class and wish to jump into the job.

I'm sorry if my POV was vague. Fulfilling other class requirements aren't factored into the ratio. BLM requires monk, yet you'd be hard pressed to make any rational connection between the two. Meaning, if the system were different, you'd never even consider PUG and BLM to be related.

1:1 more specifically means that the lvl 50 class which has the most direct influence over the job, and the fact that they both share the same Main Weapon.

I enjoy many people's ideas that stem from their excitement. They're fun to read. It's the job stemming that I take issue with, because they don't consider the limitations of tying a weapon to ONE class. Or how complicated it would get. They're never thought out, so they say silly things like MRD > SAM. Take my Ronin > SAM example. Samurai's are also known for their pole arm use and archery. Having either ARC or LNC as the 15 requirement wouldn't make that 2:1. Samurai and Ronin still use Katana, ergo 1:1. Creating a new class as the foundation of the new job. That GLA > DRK/PLD idea makes me disappointed and nervous, since I'd want a great weapon for DRK, yet GLA is limited to swords (and daggers as of 1.0 lol). So they'd have to find some work around to make it happen.

I have no idea what they're planning on putting as the base for SCH. I don't particularly care as long as they give us a new class. I'm in the waiting for NIN/Assassin/THF/Rogue/SAM boat. For the SMN and SCH lovers, I'm happy for them. I'm playing either way.

Guys, the book IS your "pet." Arcana are inanimate objects brought to life via magic. It actually makes more sense for the progression of Arcanist > Scholar than it does Arcanist > Summoner. Primals aren't really inanimate objects.

Let's see what SE does, though.

Let's see what SE does, though.

Or maybe Summoner gets the primals and Scholar can bring golems and dolls and stuff to life?

I would love to have my books animate things or even better yet use my book to kill things. That way I can either go on a fruitless hunt to look for the Necronomicon or reaffirm the belief that books are indeed dangerous~

I see your point, and I admit my judgment may be clouded by how much I love FFT, but I think the idea of unlocking new jobs from combinations of the base classes is a more fun way to do things. It gives people the satisfaction of getting to play around on a few of the base classes while still working toward their greater goal of unlocking the job they really want to play. I see it as a win-win from both a player and developer standpoint.

FFT is my #1 Final Fantasy title as stated in the Best of the Best thread. I'm just having a hard time seeing the connection outside having access to multiple jobs on one character. While I agree with the fun in unlocking jobs, this game is more like 'Adding 5 new abilities' to a class and solidifying a specific role.

When I leveled Archer, Thief and Geomancer, I was awarded with an all new job, Ninja. Knight, Monk and Dragoon gave me Samurai. So while I agree that's fun, it isn't how FFXIV works. With the exception of Bard, most of the classes still remain remarkably close to their job purpose wise. Since we're FFT lovers, take Squire for example. It can use swords, but when you unlock Knight, you are awarded with an entire skill set devoted to Knight. Not Squire with a sprinkle of Knight abilities, which describes the FFXIV system. Unlocking from a combination of having the required level and turning a class into a job are very different. There are so many weapon types. Maces and Rapiers for example. Wouldn't it be better to create something new with those? Rather than merging old classes and recycling the same weapons? Which is how the game currently works. It may or may not change in time. So I'm just working with what we have now.

I have no idea how things with progress in the future. It's just a personal concern of mine. I enjoy combat, and progression that enhances the combat experience.

Can anyone give me a light what the speciality of Scholar is? Never got the chance to try it before and seems like everyone is very looking forward to it.

In FF11, it was a hybrid of black mage and white mage and could switch between a nuking role and a healing role in the field.

In FF14, you can pretty much already switch between black mage and white mage in the field simply by switching weapons, so we're not really sure what exactly the Scholar job is going to bring to the table yet.

I was waiting on speculation to begin! xD As many as won't want to hear it, there is a chance that Scholar is as close to the stereotypical RDM as we will get this time. I said there's a CHANCE, not trying to start a flame war nor do I wish to argue about it! I also think it could end up being more focused on being an "Oracle/Mystic" type of job. Encompassing "crowd control", wide variety of debuffs, DoT spells, etc. All depends on the path SE wants to take it down. I'm calling it now tho....the general class name for SCH will be either Sage or Mystic probably leaning more towards the latter ^_^

A bit off topic but....The above being said if they were to include an official "Red Mage" into the game I have a feeling they'll make it a bit more fluent in melee this time.... especially if they were to name it's general class "Fencer" not to mention to keep the massing from QQing about lolmeleerdm.... just sayin O_O

Edit: I take that back I feel like they'll use Sage for Scholar and Mystic for Oracle somewhere down the line if they were to implement it.
