We posted at the exact same minute LOL... oh well, I'm just super excited that they managed to add another job! I've always loved the idea of scholar and am seriously considering maining it.

Do you guys think Onion Scholar has a good ring to it? XD

I am curious because they answered the question about a new healer as "there might be a new healer job in the future" or something like it. This was after SCH was announced, I wonder if SCH actually won't be healing in ARR or if they just didn't want to reveal anything about SCH before E3.

So this potential and unconfirmed? Job tree thing... I wonder where Thief would slide into? Pug? Just speculation of course.

I'm interested to see how/if Arcanist is going to branch to Summoner and Scholar.

I hope not. I wish people would give up the branching job theories and just be satisfied by an entire new class and job. 1:1 for now. It might be more viable after a massive raise in the level cap though.

But it isn't is it? According to the site you need one class at 30, and another at 15 before unlocking jobs... so 2:1 ?

Seems like it would be easier with 2:1 or 3:1 because the devs could add more jobs without having to add base classes. Also, one could simply jump right into the new job (assuming prerequisites already met) without needing to level a class one doesn't necessarily want to play.

If there's a 1:1 ratio, then two classes both using books would be very confusing.

Nah they'll just state the requirement on it, which class it's for. No more confusing than THMs and CNJs each having a 2H "staff" or 1H "wand". For now I like the idea of a new class though, I'd like to see more variety before we start pairing off similar jobs.

I suppose, but, I don't know.

I think we need more information on what exactly Arcanist is and how it plays. We know it gets Carbuncle, but...what else? That might explain or clear up how it evolves into the job.

Excuse my very strong thoughts on the subject of Scholar branching from Arcanist, but here is my wall-o-text:

- "They didn't announce a class." The "announcement" was basically "So, about Sch.. 'Yes, we have sch, more at E3." There was no fanfare, no balloons, and definitely no info. It makes no sense to take the games 1 pet job and make it branch into Sch

- Whm and blm already share weapons. Their Relics are both Staves.

- Scholars can just use Grimoires, Smn uses Tomes.

- The job system is complex enough as it is, without mixing in that 1 and only 1 class can branch off. Think about it from a new player perspective, splitting jobs is somethign that makes sense down the line, to an established and knowledgable player-base who wants more diversity.

- Additionally, they want more jobs for us to level. Timesinks.

- Think about the job from a LORE perspective. They gave an example of a job that could split:

Glad > PLD or DRK

This makes sense. You embrace the path of dark or light. But how would the Arcanist plotline go?

"Oh you have master the arcane art of summoning carbuncle, go forth and learn to tap into the power of the greater primals!"

Awesome. Not so awesome for scholar though.

For 35 levels, you are not a scholar, or anythign resembling one. This is the story you follow:

"You have mastered the art of summoning! Now, go forth and abandon your ability to summon and master the art of studying sh*t and read enemy weaknesses with SCAN!"

- Summoner/Scholar would be forced, and contrived. Bard vs Ranger, YES. Pld vs Drk, YES. Scholar to summoner? no.

- LASTLY, they have not finalized what weapon Arcanist/SMN will use. They can easily use a different weapon. The box art shows them weaponless. I know it was previously said they would use a book, but things can change and in the lore of 1.0, Arcanist NPC's (Both the guy in the GC story and the guild in 1.0 used this steam-punky stave.

Here is a picture of a GM, gears as an Arcanist

He is also an Arcanist

TL;DR: Scholar will get it's own class.

isn't summoner the 8th job?

seems kind of odd they would even say anything about SCH, since the game releases in 3 months and as far as we know, won't be out for the launch. Maybe they will surprise us though with a reveal right before the game comes out lol.

SMN is 8th, later on they clarified that they meant 9th job. I suppose I should edit the original post to match it up.

There's some flawed logic here. It may not have been confirmed by the dev team what Arcanist would use during initial development of ARR. But what we have been shown was the announcement of Arcanist and Summoner at the same time, both of which are holding a book.

Link of Arcanist holding book.

You're also assuming the Scholar can scan. FFXI's iteration of SCH has it as a hybrid of being WHM and BLM. We don't know FFXIV's role for Scholar. We do know that Arcanist is a debuffer. Would Summoner become a debuffer as well? Or would Scholar take the debuffing element from Arcanist in its evolution?

TL;DR: We don't know what will happen. We can only speculate.

Huh? They did not clarify it during the live letter itself... was it corrected later?
And even the job soul board in the armoury board showed only 8 entries...?

Ha, the scan was just a joke, and you're right in that we know nothing.

But this isn't like bard, which is the largest leap in class to job. You are taking a pet job and completely eliminating the pet aspect.

You have to assume that Arcanist will have PET abilities, as it does have carbuncle. We also know that Carbuncle is only summonable by Arcanist.

This leaves 2 options: Scholar will also summon something, or Scholar will have a handful of unusable abilities from Arcanist.

I guess the third option is that Acn has no pet abilities besides "Summon Carbuncle" which is highly unlikely.
