How many crafting and/or gathering skills can each toon have? Meaning, are there main and sub? Can I have all crafting and gathering jobs or only 1 or 2?

You can have as many crafting and gathering jobs as you'd like :D

I was afraid of that. That might kill the economy.

How do you figure? It's not like EVERYONE is going to go and cap all craft/gather jobs

You can get them all but in the end im sure most people will only farm mats for 1-2. Most people will lvl them to repair gear.

Due to inventory restrictions, most people will probably only level up one or two at any given time. (Probably complementary stuff, like fishing + cooking, or mining+blacksmithing, botany+woodworking, etc.)

It happened in SWTOR. When you "CAN" have every skill, and people will, you eliminate the need to buy from other people. Thus limiting the economy. In 11 you could only max out 1 main skill and if I remember correctly another would cap at 60 (this was years ago and might be different now).

There will always be a need for crafting. No way can 1 person farm mats and hold mats for every dol/doh. Im starting with Cooking/fishing/bot. Food will always be needed and people will not wanna farm it for themselves thus buying it off AH. Even if they have max fishing and cooking but have no time to farm them they need to buy mats and have the time to craft.

AH economy is for people who want things fast, and people make money off AH who have the time to farm.

Um, no? You can have 1 main crafting profession and 2 gathering professions in SWTOR. Yes, you can have alts for the rest of them if you wanted, but you can do that in literally every game that has crafting. The economy was not effected at all by this, the AH was still very healthy and tons of players relied on crafters for the top end mods, since they required a lucky reverse engineer of raid gear mods.

XI had a really restrictive crafting system. It was a massive pain in the butt to level any craft, and being able to only level 1 craft did nothing to help the economy. It led to a crazy amount of craft bots making food, shihei, bolts, etc and actually was a hindrance to the economy in a lot of ways.

Is that how it was in 1.0 as well?

The more crafters the lower the item price. Full time crafters know if you put items up and they sell before they log out to raise them higher. You'll learn who the in game seller bots are and price your item just below. fewer crafters = monopoly Smiley: nod

Sorry, I stand corrected about SWTOR. It's been a minute since I played. I just remember not needing the AH to craft unless I was being impatient.

This is every game regardless of the crafting situation. You can farm mats for anything you want and have a friend make it for you. But like i said be for and you just said.. its for people who want things now.

While I agree with your statement and it "could" happen in reality, I shall give you my viewpoint as I had everything leveled in 1.0.

If I wanted to make items for spiritbonding / mass crafting sessions I wouldnt go out and farm the base materials just to turn it into another item which I would then use as another base item for the required armour, It was just too long a process. I would run to the retainer market and buy as much as I could to save me time and only craft what I really needed.

If it became apparent that said items were not available, which was rare even towards the end of 1.0, and I could make good profit vs time It would take to get the items, I would farm for those items and then sell some of it on for profit and use the rest for crafting.

People will always level gathering crafts, people will always level a / multiple crafts to make money. Some may stop at a level which allows them to make a profit on fast selling consumables. This happened in FFXI, it happened in FFXIV 1.0 ( Cannot comment on others as I haven't played anything else ) and I can pretty much guarentee it will happen in 2.0 as well.

In time, undercutting is what will kill the economy. Too many crafters and too much supply outweighing the demand is a valid concern. This is what happened in XI, but that's natural. New crafting recipes will be introduced over time, and the same recession will happen again. It's just a matter of constantly watching the market and being on the lookout for the best ratio of time and profit. That's what keeps crafting/gathering exciting, at least to me.

So you can have as many craft/gathering skills as you want but can they all be maxed? Or will 1 or 2 be able to be maxed and the others capped at a certain level?

When I played 1.0 I found most people leveled a few intertwined craft/gathering jobs. For example, the master Armorer in my LS leveled Armorer, Blacksmith and Miner. Our master Leatherworker leveled Leatherworking and Weaver. I was the jack of all trades, leveling all crafts and gathering except Fishing and Cooking. This made me the repair guy as I could usually repair gear, if not people could go to one of the specialists.

Since you had everything capped did you use the AH for mat a lot?

I didn't have everything capped when I quit but all my crafts were in the 30ish range. There was no AH. There was the market wards which was a bloody mess. There were a lot flat trades too, you could be in the guild house crafting when someone would ask for a certain type of plank for leather strips. You would either sell to them or just trade for something you needed. Having all crafts and gathering leveled I found that I was pretty self sufficient mat-wise. Generally, if I needed it I could make it myself or gather it. The nice thing was in my LS there were a lot people that didn't craft at all, but they supplied us with drop only mats in exchange for gear and repairs. It was a good system, as we kept them in the field and they kept us in hides and scales and such.

LOL, each answer is just opening things up for more questions. August 27th can't get here fast enough. So will 2.0 have a real AH?

IIRC there will be an AH, but not at launch. I could be confusing housing with AH though...

There will be an AH at launch. This is what Yoshi has said about it.

Quote:
The retainer system has been revamped from the ground up. We are planning to implement new functions such as the auction house system, which was requested by a ton of players. Additionally, you will be able to display the retainer of your liking while in the wards. It’s quite difficult to explain so please see for yourself in the Beta Test!

So what would you say is the best craft to start as a starter craft? Not so much as to make money, but as to make the other crafts even easier to level, and to fix your armor to be more self sufficient.

If you're going for self-sufficiency, first decide on which class you'll want to focus on. If you're more of a mage, you'll want to look into Botany and Weaving, not only to make your own robes but to repair them as well. For armored classes, Mining and Blacksmithing will help out. You should compliment your crafts with your combat class if you're not so much focused on making money. Once those are leveled, you can branch out if you'd like.

If like FF11 then having mules in each city will help with storage for you crafts. That's what I did, as well as send gil back and forth to get items from the Guilds and Auction house.

Cooking was my favorite. I would hand out food and drinks to party members. Great stuff.

leveled up the crafts while waiting for a party.
