How did you come up with a last name for your character?Follow

So, with phase 3 around the corner and official release of ARR in less than 3 months, I guess lots of people are getting excited.

Being a FFXI player, I always love one word name, but understand the reason having a last name is good for some people, because they will squeeze the two words into one.
I'm sure lots of people out there are just like me, think one word name is more convenient and easy to remember the other players you have encountered.

I want to see how people come up with a last name for their character.
I was Mostwanted in FFXI, but I certainly do not want to be Most Wanted.
I use Mos Taru in 1.0 as I was a lalafell.

so... tell us yours and see how creative you are!

I haven't decided yet but I've been leaning toward bird names. Like Swift or Thrush or Finch maybe

I'm not set on a name yet but most likely I'll be Pink first name cause people on ps3 who have known me for a long time call me that from my old username, with a word I like for my last name that means something to me personally. Not sure what yet, maybe a word from one of my favorite songs titles or something.

Broken Fox - the name was inspired by Gray Fox from Metal Gear Solid and Broken Sword from Hero (the Jet Li movie).

I just made the first name Evil and combined the MadMike as my last. Just a nickname I always had when I was growing up. People would say I look mad at a alot or I have a evil mind. Neither one are true but oh well lol

In FFXI my name was Kaikyaku but it was too long that no one ever typed it. It was always just Kaik.

I was still attached to my FFXI name when XIV came out but knew no one would ever type the whole thing out.

... So I decided on a short first name and my FFXI name as the last name.

Ketch Kaikyaku

Edit: Also wanted to go for that dorky Stan Lee naming style.

Onion Thief. As I'm sure you can appreciate, it wasn't very difficult.

Catwho became Cat Who. Easy enough.

For my new character, Ornlona Wistuwyn, I'm going full on "lore" - that's very much a Roegadyn Seawolf name. ("Maple Gatherer, Daughter of West Dew.")

I spent a long time thinking of a last name. I finally settled on Bartel Hayward, as I thought it fit very well. The whole name has a very olde english feel to it, and reminds me of a name you'd find in medieval times.

Edy Sormr - purely random and nothing to do with old FFXI servers or anything :P

I did have two in-game brothers with the same second name when 1.0 first came out, one of them I knew from FFXI and another random guy - they both quit so it was just the older brother left to fend off the Garleans!

Long-ish story inc.

My FFXI name was Hank. A year or so after I started playing, I would get this random tells, with just "Soandso>> you" in the text box, about once a month. I was really confused why people kept sending me "you" and nothing else, especially from strangers I had never met or played with.

This went on for two years or so, and then I had a revelation: people were mixing up a slash command. Instead of saying /thankyou, they were mistakenly adding spaces to the line, saying /t hank you.

So, in 1.0, my character's name was Hank You, obviously. And of course, my friends would send me tells, saying "very much" just to ***** with me.

I'm really leaning towards the name "Jekyll Hyde" as an allegory for my character. I'd like to level a white mage, healer, and then maybe a black mage or some sort of damage dealer. So it would play into the character of being really good and helpful or someone who can become violent.

Yes, I've been thinking about this for a while.

Probably a dumb question, but do you have to have a surname or can it just be one word?

Thanks

Just like the lack of creativity that helped me choose my first name, my surname is Korsair. I just took the word corsair and changed the C to a K. But not because I liked the corsair job, but because I had a box of Corsair memory sitting on my desk at the time.

I'm glad I have two months to make up names. I guess they have first and last to create a larger name pool.

Is it only letters or can you include numbers in the name?

I googled "miq'ote names" and I found a couple of useful links. One link was a lodestone thread about miqote naming conventions, and I also found some name generators (the best was on a site for a RP ls/guild).

These are from my Tolkien Bestiary

Olorin (named after some wizard dude, I don't know ;) )

and

Laiquendi (means Green-elves)

So when I roll it will either be Ronyn/Barretjax Olorin/Laiquendi.

Viertel has been a name I've used in every single MMO for the main character and/or usually the first one I create. In music it's quarter note (German) and that's the usual base mark for metronome markings in music just like your character is the base of your adventure in an MMO.

Haineka is an anagram of one of the declensions of kaihi (essive singular iirc, but I could be wrong). It's Finnish for cataract and while it refers to the medical condition it can also be used as an adjective describing a waterfall (or referring to the waterfall itself) and one of the many implications is tireless and considering an MMO character never sleeps it seemed appriopriate.

Hence, Viertel Haineka, or "tireless pulse/beat".

In 1.0 my name was Akua Aumoe. In Hawaiian, Akua means god, goddess or spirit. Aumoe means midnight, so Goddess of Midnight. In 2.0 my name will be Delmonte Niblet. Green Giant actually makes niblets, but Greengiant doesn't work as a first name so I took the name of another canned vegetable company. Niblet just feels right for a lalafell...and I really, really like corn Smiley: tongue

If I ever decide to make an alt it'll be a dunes lalafell... something. Probably Black Mage. And I'll call him Krayt Asuran. Krayt was my XI character (named after the Krayt dragons from Star Wars Smiley: cool /nerd) and Asura was my server. It'll be a tribute to that awesome little dude.
