Is there a program that will allow me to play on my pc with a PS3 controller? ?

Having tried this, I have the following recommendation. Use the wired Xbox 360 controller.

Motionjoy is, I felt, an unstable 3rd-party program that can cause problems and frustrations. For example, pushing two buttons at once seems to confuse it. You may also see sticky-button type glitches that cause Motionjoy to just input one button repeatedly.

The wireless 360 controller turns itself off when you are busying in menus or taking a short break. In 1.0, you had to restart the whole game to get it to go active again. Or you could just leave it plugged into the charger at all times.

Therefore, having tried all the options myself, I highly recommend the wired 360 controller for playing on PC.
You can go to a website to download the support files, which will support your key-mapping in a much more functional and stable program.

That stinks! Maybe I can find another program.

99% of the time I'll be keyboard+mouse but for times I'm gathering or crafting or just being plain lazy it would be nice to use a PS3 controller as I already own one.

Buy one of these. It is an excellent controller that functions exactly the same as a PS3 controller, and even feels very similar. I used it a little for beta weekend and loved it. The only reason I won't use it exclusively is because I absolutely hate that you have to hold down trigger buttons to access your abilities. I wish it was just a hotbar that you could use the dpad to move through.

I think once they actually give us some controller options it would be nice if there was an optional setting where just hitting R2 or L2 would keep that half of the hotbar open without needing to hold the button down. I'd also like an invert axis option for controllers. Other wise, I think the controller worked really well. I did notice some targeting issues, but I never went into the options and tried to adjust anything. I will be messing with it on the next test time though.

I saw an option under I think "Character settings" that changed the L2 and R2 to "toggle". Did not try this myself. There was another option, like "press once" or something as well. Might want to take a look.

Also, I know for sure that the option to invert the controller is available. Are you on PC or PS3?

The option to invert camera is separated for controller and keyboard, so you shouldn't have trouble finding this. The option for the hotbar toggling was a bit more obscure to find.

I highly suggest opening each and every settings menu and scrolling down to see the options available!

Well then it's a good thing Yoshi-P made up for it by signing your journal.

Hmm, I thought I had looked pretty thoroughly in all those menus (it's usually the first thing I do in a game until I'm comfortable with the controls), but it's quite possible I missed it. I'll take a look again this beta weekend. Thanks for the info.

Now that you mention it, the ability to just "Toggle" will probably work very well. Especially at the beginning when you are just spamming 3 skills.

Like true action-game controller mapping where you just press x,y,a,b to trigger skills!

Will have to try this myself. :D

The triggers on controller are needed if you want access to more than 8-12 skills without scrolling through menus or hotbars. There is only 12 buttons on a standard controller. Many websites are praising the hotbar system. I really hope Yoshi doesn't remove the number of available actions via the hotbar and revert to the basic A,B,X,Y and scroll.

That could put console players back at a severe disadvantage in terms of speed.

Wint, I want a mmo controller specific for ARR as well. Only I want a keyboard/gamepad hybrid. Smiley: grin

A toggle is fine though so you do not have to hold triggers down. I can see myself not using a toggle so much though. That would require me to pay attention to what triggers I have activated versus just choosing on the fly.

I guess the playstyle matters more when it comes to PVP. I would never even think about playing pvp with keyboard only as moving the camera would be way too slow for that.

I used to play FFXI using WASD for movement and arrow keys for camera. Was easy to use ctrl + macro or whatever that way for me aswell. But FFXIV has done keyboard + mouse gameplay as it should be so i will be using that for FFXIV as i feel more in control of my character that way (no mouse just feels kinda clumsy for me, even though i will probably play with gamepad aswell for some relaxed gameplay).

You make a good point Silverhope.

The PC version will support a programmable gaming mouse. (Although it may be considered a 3rd party macro device by the TOS.)

While you can use a gaming mouse on PS3, there will likely not be any way to program the extra buttons.
