I enjoyed the travel sequences of airships and ferries in FFXI. For me, a large part of the allure for MMOs is that it is a huge persistent world inhabited by other real players. The ride sequences really added to that. That's just me though, I tend to play MMOs a little slower than most of the "get in, dress up your barbie doll in cool gear, get out" folks out there. I play them to, for a time, forego reality and enjoy the world Square has created. It may sound cheesy but I'll miss those little intricacies of XI. I wish that Yoshi would at least plug those things in as options....and maybe make the options worthwhile to the less "immersion-centric" players out there like a Ferry with great fishing spots during the ride, or an Airship where you can take place in random fates that occur in mid-air.

That kind of stuff would give them a reason to add it into the game...a reason that would actually make it fun for the majority of folks.

Don't quote me but I think FATEs are be considered for rides. I for one hope this happens.

Yea me too I like to enjoy the game a little and enjoy the scenery. I enjoyed watching the scenery on the ships especially the manaclipper.. I would sit back with Tesee and just listen to the music and fish. We enjoyed the festivals even though they never changed them and for the most part the prizes either, I hope FFXIV does not fall into that trap, 7 years of the same festivals uggggg....

I left FFXI a couple of weeks ago now and almost everyone I know has all jobs to 99.. They just powered through them and never really got to know or enjoy the job... I only had like 4 level 99 jobs but then I was a whm and that is all anyone wanted me for so that's pretty much all I played.

You play this game the way i do, small world! That would be cool fate on the ships.

I hope airship/boat rides make a comeback in some capacity. They made the world feel alive and immersive. Just cut the ridiculously long wait times.

I'll be seriously disappointed if there isn't a ship somewhere, where the Sea Horror doesn't immediately attack the first person exiting, then wipe anyone not capable of soloing it on the spot.

I enjoyed the airship rides too. What I didn't enjoy is rolling up to the entrance and missing the ship by half a second and having to wait 15 minutes to get where I wanted to go.

Once I got to the other cities I almost never used the Airship in ARR this last weekend, Teleport is just too handy.

That's funny, I forgot all about teleport until about 6 hours in to testing. I wish they'd done away with it all together, really. Between Airships and Chocobos there was no real necessity for them.

You have that backwards Smiley: tongue

Frankly doing the main story missions with only Airships and Chocobos would have been a nightmare. One of the NPCs you need to return to over and over is in a town that doesn't have an Aetheryte, so being able to port close and then run the rest of the way was very handy. I see chocobos being more useful for getting across zones or to camps without crystals, Airships I don't know what use they'll have after you get your chocobo.

I agree that seeing airships flying, chocobos running, birds chirping all add to the being in a breathing persistent world. It also adds to the cinematic flair. You see this in sci-fi movies and it makes everything seem more robust.

However I also agree with Yoshi and Wint. A game is supposed to aim to be fun and engaging first. Sitting around waiting in,lines is never fun in itself. Idc if it's real life or game, game, traffic, grocery checkout, movie theater, bathroom, etc. Just look at any major city with major traffic problems and you can see what I mean. You might make it fun through chatting or interactions while waiting or you might make it horrible being negative to those around you.

If they went with fully persistent real time airships. They better have more than one airship going from airdock to airdock/ city to city. And have an one airship always docked that you can click on and get a cs for instant travel. To minimize the negatives that plague real travel times.

I really agree with Yoshi on him holding off until he has content for the actual airships themselves. Beautiful environments are cherished the first time and maybe sometimes appreciated on occasion afterwards. But most of the time after seeing the same scenery day in or day out. The everyday complexities of life tend to drown out your appreciation for that.

Unless we are talking about my fiance. Every morning I wake up, every day, every night, I look at her like it's the first time we met.

I'm happy to not have to deal with the long wait times of a real time travel system, but I do hope they implement something with FATEs as others have mentioned. I remember the first time I went on the boat from Selbina and a Sea Horror popped up. It was frightening and awesome, and then seeing a Summoner solo it was equally amazing. Hoping to see similar types of moments in ARR, while being happy to not be shackled by an outdated transport system.

First time I could Solo the Sea Horror was a happy day... Pirate invasions were fun too. I also spent most of my free time wandering Valkurm, looking for corpses, or nuking trains to town while waiting for the next " Um, are you busy? I'm dead in (insert impossible location) " message.

I always thought the Airship rides could have been spiced up in a similar fashion... Helium lures for Flying fish seemed like a no-brainer.
