Weapon variety all classes Follow

What I liked about ffxi is that one job could equip many weapons with varying effectiveness. My question, do you find the lack of variety frustrating? I would like to smash faces with a great sword or dual wield axes. Even ranged is limited to bow, where is the crossbow? I know that switching weapons with jobs go hand in hand. But at the same time I feel forced to use the one weapon.

I was pretty much forced to use the 'A' weapon of whichever class I played if I wanted to be in pt on XI. Granted it was nice throwing on a dagger as rdm for a quick skill cap when tooling around but no one wanted to see me show up with it.

What I didn't like about FFXI's system was that it was convoluted. If a Warrior was an A skill in Axe, why was it given an Onion Sword (B- skill) when the game started? I think the armoury system is a nice way to streamline things in that regard.

I enjoyed having some fun with other weapons. Like equipping a staff or club on my monk and using hundred fists. One of those silly things to do when I was bored. It made me happy. I don't see it as being a huge negative to not be able to do that in XIV. If we could I probably would goof off in a similar manner though.

I agree for group content for RDM, for solo many different weapens were effective from dual wield to shield/sword.

I saw that once, with a MNK friend skilling up staff. We both agreed that an Elvaan MNK using Hundred Fists with a staff looked like he was wailing on something with a baseball bat.

I didn't care for it very much at first, but it seems like all the weapons do similar damage. It would have been nice to use a Greatsword on Paladin when soloing. In FFXI you usually stuck to one weapon type in "serious" situations with most jobs. And then with jobs like WAR and DRK that could use several different weapon types you usually ended up losing out because at a given level one weapon would have the best WS and you would have to skill them all up.

My biggest beef with the FFXIV weapon system is that Gladiators have daggers... I understand that it's just another blade, but I feel like they should have just renamed them to another type of sword to save the dagger class for Thief/Ninja. I suppose they could just have them use the Knife class... That would allow for more Ninja-esque short blades to be thrown into the mix.

Personally I would like to see NIN evolve with katana. Kunai? Stop it already!

I wouldn't mind that either, and I suppose it could allow for SAM and NIN to branch from the same starting class. Otherwise It would be hard to get that idea across with SAM having the monopoly on Katana use in FFs currently. Dual wield is another NIN staple that they would most likely have to bring across lest the fanmob don pitchforks and Firaga spells.

So we give SAM odachi and let NIN get all jedi with Katana. Maybe?

I used to play as a COR in FFXI and I do feel this armory system is a bit limiting. In the good old days, I used to wield "Joyeuse" sword which helped me during combat to gain TP and thus execute my WS with my gun (marksmanship). I had both caped and I really enjoy this versality. Perhaps is too early to draw conclusions, but I do feel this armoury system gives players less freedom.

Rose colored nostalgia is strong in this thread.

Stop kidding yourselves because the only reason you realistically didn't use your highest grade weapons was due to one of two things:

A) One of the weapons was a multi-hit weapon, i.e. Joyeuse, Ridill, Mercurial Kris, etc., and it's all you could use in that slot.

B) You were skilling up.

Warriors used an Axe and Ridill because of TP generation and due to 2 handers being terrible at the time. The moment the adjustments to 2H weapons came to pass they switched en mass because of the massive attack and accuracy bonus.

If you used Joyeuse on a COR it's because you couldn't be bothered to buy the Mercurial Kris, not because of any "flavor". The TP generation was much, much higher than Joyeuse and dramatically offset any damage rating bonus Joyeuse had especially considering you'd use ranged weaponskills anyway.

Paladins that used Great Swords might have seemed like they did more damage because the white swings were higher, but put that same attack gear on a sword and board (or dual wield swords) and you see more damage in WS potency because of their high cap on swords that pushed beyond the native benefit of using a GS.

A Monk that used club or staff pre-proc days wasn't very intelligent because all three were blunt weapons and a massive attack and accuracy hit over H2H. Plus, there was one H2H that did slashing damage and one that did piercing damage so there literally was no need to switch weapons (plus considering club and staff WSes pre-Cataclysm were dramatically inferior).

So yeah, sure, you could use alternate weapons. The problem is those "alternate choices" sucked dramatically. I know I'm not the only one that remembers *SWORD* and board WARs trying to tank back in the day.

I'm ok with the current Armory system we have. I don't see it being feasible to diversify it without ruining that system.

There is some variety now. DoMs have a choice between staves and wands (which lets you equip a shield). Gladiators have different sized blades from daggers to broadswords.

Dual wield might open up some variation however. Maybe a Gladiator could offhand an axe, for example. We'll have to see how that gets implemented.

I concur, and you are right. However, you miss the point, which is having options. For instance, as long as you can equip a crossbow, anyone is able to use it. A THF was able to pull because he had this option available, even if his/hers main wapon were daggers. With FFXIV system, perhaps roles will be more defined, since evidently a WAR can't use anything else but an axe (at least for now). Call it Joyeuse or Mercurial Kris, it doesn't change the fact that two (or more) different weapons were available to me.

In a perfect world, I would enjoy seeing class-specific weapons of all varieties (e.g. great sword: mrd only). That having been said, it's not really something I'm concerned about, and if it never happened, I would still enjoy the game.

I'm not really that upset over the lack of variety. Although maybe down the line with branching classes we may get more variety? At least with classes.

For example they could introduce Greatswords for Gladiators. So Gladiators can wield 1h swords or greatswords. But a Paladin can only wield a 1h sword and a Dark Knight can wield only a greatsword.
