Choosing RaceFollow

For folks that played FFXI, you'll recall that race choice had a fairly significant impact on HP/MP and other stats. In FFXIV, it looks like there are some starting differences but my question is whether or not these are meaningful differences by the time you get to higher levels. I'm planning on starting as a CNJ but would like to have the flexibility to play as archer/ranger once there are more job options.

The stat differences stay at exactly what they start as. They don't scale into the future.

From all of the information we have been provided thus far, race choice will not have an impact as it did in FFXI. It has been said that at lv50 the possible 6 or 7 stats point difference in race starting stats will not be noticeable.

FFXI's race stats didn't make a difference if you didn't suck.

Race stats made a massive difference for certain jobs. If you didn't notice the difference between a TaruTaru and a Galka, I suspect you're not in any position to comment on the skill level of others.

In FF14, the stat differences are very tiny, and make very little difference, especially after the first 10 levels.

I'm thinking your class determines how many HP per VIT you receive.


I did it as a level 20 MRD. It could be the level of the class affecting it. I guess more experimentation is needed.


3 HP @ LV 1-10
8 HP @ LV 11-40
13 HP @ LV 41-50

regardless of class, race, or tail color.


Thus, while the racial stats do no change or scale, the effect that the stats have on your effective HP do scale with level. That would mean that it's possible that, for example, the amount that STR effects you actual damage output actually scales with level.

So in this way the racial stat differences may effectively scale with level.

^this. You clearly didn't play old school FFXI lol, pre-Abyssea in the height of CoP and Aht Urghan. Especially when gear mattered, and it wasn't freely accessible to anyone like it is now (think King gear, Dyna-Xarc drops, Salvage gear). There were times when even the best taru tank would get one-shotted by a cheap unblocked TP move. And the way damage for WS or nukes was calculated with modifiers - there just wasn't getting around the stat differences.

A video showing the difference of race stats at lvl 50. Basically, it really doesn't matter. Go ahead with that big bulking Roagadyn casting spells like a little lalafell.

I don't like it personally. Maybe don't have it as punishing as ffxi's racial differences, but at least have some meaning to choosing our race other than for just vanity reasons. But oh well, it is what it is.

Hatamaz, I agree with you. Something in between FFXI (I guess I was "pre-Abyssea" like Loris mentioned since I remember things exactly as described) and nothing at all makes sense. Sounds like SE took a very conservative route. Pros and cons I guess.

And thanks Gnu for the post - I wonder how that translates to attack power with the STR differences at 50.

I think certain race/job combinations were unfairly misaligned in FFXI. Some people thought only tarus had any business being black Mages but at an endgame boss fight, our Galka blm often out damaged the lot of them on account that he could eat an AoE and keep casting while ankle deep in low hp tarus who couldn't survive.


It's situations like that which made for a good lesson not to dismiss differences based solely on damage stats.

I'm happy with the way it is in FFXIV. Races should always be purely cosmetic. A person shouldn't be pigeon-holed into playing a race they don't like over one they do just to deal more damage or whatever.

I just don't agree. A huge Roegadyn should have a few more HP than a tiny Lalafell. Getting a few points to help define the strengths and weaknesses of your race seems fitting. The races that had equal starting stats seemed a bit disappointing to me.

I think they found a well-balanced approach to what each of us prefer by making the stats somewhere between significant and trivial.

If this were a single player game I would agree with you, but this is a character you're going to be playing for months/years. Aesthetics win out here.
