Crafting / Repair questionFollow

So I saw there were armor menders almost every encampment, but;
1. Is it possible to repair your own armor and weapons?
2. Do you have to level a different craft for weapons vs. armor
3. Do you have to level a different craft for different types of weapons or armor (i.e. cloth vs. leather vs. plate)
4. It seemed in the beta that the costs to repair items went up as you leveled up, and the rate at which they "wore out" increased as my level increased. Did anyone else experience this, or was I just dying too much? :p
5. And lastly, do you have to have crafts leveled to the level of the gear to repair them, or is there a basic repair level (or something like that) you can level crafts to, to gain access to repair things yourself?

Thanks for your help with all my questions guys :)

In a way the answer to all of those except #4 would be kind of yes.

#1 Yes you can
#2 Yes you do
#3 see #2
#5 while it may not be the same level of the gear item you will need to be a certain level to repair a item

I never even noticed what you mentioned in #4 so can't help you on that one, but yes as you level up you get better gear so of course the price to repair will go up. If I'm not mistaken its based of the gear level and not yours. One thing they did in v1 was the same with the armor mender he will repair any gear up to 99%, you needed to have someone do it for you or yourself to get that last 1%. Didnt really worry about lvn up a craft in beta but did play around with it a little on my v1

Only thing I don't like is you need the exact craft to repair certain items. So I would have to switch my gear set for every different piece of gear I have. I should be able to stay CNJ and just repair as long as I have the appropriate crafts leveled up.

Your questions have been answered, but I would like to add to it.

It is a pain to have to change into several crafting jobs in order to repair armor and weapons.
Its so annoying, that I rather pay the repair guy then go through the hassle.

That being said, I did try to get GSM leveled up enough to use materia, but never got there because I ran out of inventory and armor inventory, then out of crystals, so had to change to miner to go farm them. Then got bored.

Talk about tedium.

I'll have to read up on material before the game starts so that I don't waste time.

Out of all the crafts, mining was cool because: YOU GET SNEAK. Yes, you move slowly, but it got me passed many a mob camp to do certain quests etc. I just changed back to my main to continue on.

Cheers!

I leveled Weaving and Leathercrafting enough to make myself gear, but I didn't get a chance to try and repair any of it. I did notice that the gear I made as a lvl 15 Leathercrafter, which I used on my lvl 13 ~ 15 Thaumaturge, had information on the gear about what was needed to repair it. The gear would say things like "Level 2 Goldsmith" or "Level 3 Weaver".

For instance, Hempen Robe is a lvl 12 piece of armor. I don't remember the exact level to craft it, but it was probably in the lvl 10 to 15 range for a Weaver. But the repair requirement is level 2 Weaving.

From what I'm seeing on a database site, it looks like the crafting level required to repair gear is equal to the level required to equip the gear minus 10.

That was my goal for beta was get GSM high enough so i can meld materia, i gotta say the materia melding is alot of fun, if you wear jewerly wile crafting or gathering you will get materia that has stats for those classes (like +cp or +gathering) if you wear jewerly wile fighting or casting magic you will get materia for those classes (like +acc or +int) what ever spirt you put into a item you will get materia related to the spirt! I love how jewerly has materia slots, for the the funnest part of crafting is getting those HQs, if you check my lodestone you can see some items iv made and melded!

Perhaps your threshold for tolerating tedium is lower than mine. But I found that once you get used to managing gear sets, it isn't so bad. At first, I would go to the armory, find the right main weapon, equip it, then go to the character menu to equip the gear set for that class. That was very tedious.

However, after watching the developer's video on Duty Finder, I noticed that equipping the main weapon first was an unnecessary step. You can go right into the gear set menu, right click a gear set, and that will change you to the right class and equip all of your gear in one step. Once I started doing it that way, I didn't find it to be a big deal.

Making sure you keep your gear set updated whenever you get new gear is the only down side that I could find. I got into the habit of always reassigning the gear I was wearing to a gear set before changing to a different class.

FYI, Botany gets the same "Stealth" ability as Mining. I expect Fishing to be quite a bit different from Botany and Mining, but I wouldn't be surprised if it also had Stealth.

Also worth noting is that Stealth may not work on higher level mobs. I could have sworn that the in game text indicated that whether Stealth would be effective depended on the level of the mob relative to your Botany/Mining level. The information I can find right now makes it sounds like Stealth only works on mobs lvl 20 and under, regardless of your level.

Either way, if you get a DoW or DoM class leveled high enough, you may be safer running around as that class rather than relying on Stealth.

One more note about Stealth: you can mine/harvest with Stealth up. You don't have to drop it in order to mine/harvest like you did with Invisible in FFXI.

You get new traits as you level that improve your stealth against higher level mobs.

If you don't die, the repair bill is usually manageable. However, since I tend to level all tradeskills, I usually end up repairing my own gear, so it only costs me the cost of swinging a pickaxe or hatchet once for each repair. The more of the bar you fill, the more XP you get from repairing (to the point that I have been surprised by a leveled up off of repairs before).

Yes, as the tier of the equipment you get go up, the expense for repairing goes up as well. However, it costs exactly the same to repair at 80% compared to repairing at 10%, so there is no real benefit with repairing at a higher percentage unless you're planning on doing something that may drop a significant chunk of durability quickly, like dungeons.

^ This. I changed to Miner and just went wandering around all the areas with the big angry mobs, it was awesome.

One thing that I meant to try but totally forgot about is changing classes in dungeons when using the DF. Anyone know if you can change to DoH classes for repairs if in a DF party?

I'm pretty sure you can't, although I honestly don't remember now.

No changing class (or even from class -> job) in Dungeon.

I have to agree. Not a big fan of all the restrictions on duties. I really would like to be able to enter a dungeon or Guildheist in a party of four with any job combo we so choose, and be able to change jobs at will just like in the outside world (level sync applied of course).

Not sure why SE feels the need to micromanage parties that form prior to starting a dungeon run. I can understand a little with the automatic duty finder, but seriously, give me and my teammates a little room to have some fun and try something different on the 10th or 20th run.

I believe it's because you would be able to roll need on any loot then.

I don't know anything about developing video games, but would it really be that difficult to allow switching to DoH jobs only? In the grand scheme of things, I guess it's not that big a deal, but I would like to see this change at some point in the future.
