A little surprised this wasn't already posted! I'm very excited about this.

Greetings,

Below is an update from Hiroshi Minagawa in regards to window and font sizes.

To start out the below three sizes will be possible:
  • 80% (smaller)

  • 120% (larger)

Below are a couple of things to note about this as well:
  • You can indicate different sizes for each window.
  • The display size is saved on a window to window basis and will be maintained even if you re-open a window.
  • The size settings will be saved even when logging in again.

Display process-wise it is possible to address this for 5% or even 300% size changes, so after launch we will be expanding the customizability range to be 50%-200% and making it possible to make even more minute changes.

Below is an image illustrating the three different sizes:

*These size changes will also apply to buffs/debuffs since they are part of the HUD.
*These changes can also be made on the PS3 version.

Edit: I'm a sucker for cleanliness. ^_~

This is pretty good. The UI is pretty cluttered as it is especially with a cross hotbar, so just making everything smaller is a good option.

Oh thank god! This was actually one of my bigger gripes, trying to read 12 point font on a 46" tv screen. I literally had to sit like 3 feet away in order to be able to read all the text. This will be fantastic (and is pretty necessary)!

While I'm glad they're putting this in.. I'm a little confused as to why it's so limited.

That's cool and all, but how much more time would it have taken to make it so you could click and drag a corner of the window and expand it to whatever size you wanted? Jus sayin

200% at release is limited? I mean, different strokes for different folks and all, but I'd think that would be large enough for someone of legal blindness to be able to see when it comes to most of the UI.

Hyperbole aside though, one big question is whether this will also affect the mini-map, since ...

Developer Feedback: All of the UI size will be adjustable by the official release. However, it won't be possible to adjust the size of the mini-map because it's graphical data.

Yeah, as you can see, they've struck down in the past the possibility of being able to adjust the size of the mini-map, something I think several people have lamented through the beta so far. The question is whether this new development means something has changed and they've yet to update the master feedback list, or if things still stand as they did before in regards to that part of the UI.

I was talking about the limited options.. 80%, 100%, or 120%. What if, for some windows, I want 75%? 90%? Maybe for the minimap I'd like 115%? Maybe 120% is too big, but 100% isn't big enough. Scaling of UI elements isn't exactly a revolutionary development in interface design.

Smiley: dubious

That sounds like a failure of design right there.

Fair enough, and I agree completely. As Filth said, I'd prefer scalable windows which I can drag to resize as well, much like how the chat boxes already work at the moment. They were able to do that in 1.0 when it came to several UI features if I recall as well, including HP/MP/TP bars, enemy HP, and ... I think the map? Possibly? I honestly can't remember, it's been so long. Smiley: confused Someone feel free to correct me on that one.

And yes, the UI map in ARR being untweakable does seem pretty 'ehhh'. I never had an issue with it, but I can definitely see how others could.

I think they said they'll be allowing add-on support something like six months down the line, and that before then they will be working on the UI based on user feedback to fix things natively.

This is great news, truly. However, I wish they would, in addition, give the option to increase or decrease font size within a window.

I would like to see a font size scale separate from the window size scale created. As it appears now, when altering the window size the font size will scale accordingly to keep a particular window to font size ratio.

For example: the size of the chat window is ideal for me, though the font is so large within that window that there is hardly enough room to see more than 4-5 lines of text. I would like to be able to decrease my font size without increasing the window size to be able to see more of the chat text.

Depending on how they implement the scaling for that window, you might be able to cheat your way into the result you want... scale the window down (so the font is smaller), then drag the window out to the desired size.

Have to wait and see if that's possible.

Um... PS3 limitations?

I would just chock it up to design philosophy. When I resize a window by clicking on and dragging a corner of the window, I expect the contents of the window to stay the same size. So if I were going to make a feature that caused the contents of the window to scale in size as well, I might not choose to tie it to traditional window resizing controls.

It would be cool if they made it completely customizable, and that may come in time! But this is a step in the right direction, and I think that's what we should take away from this. :) They will probably improve it more in the future.

There isn't that I could find, and that kindof drives me crazy I liked in XI if I just pressed escape, it would close them out layer by layer. I want that. lol

You can do that in ARR as well. Just hit Esc. however many times is needed and any and all open windows will close out until you either have nothing open beyond the primary UI, or open the system menu.
