In this game a LinkShell is just a chat channel and a Free Company would be you guild or FFXI LinkShell.

I think the idea is similar to guild buffs etc in other games. We don't know for sure because there wasn't anything available in Phase 3. So it might be that your membership earns points etc for the guild and the guild can then spend them on buffing members.

In other games this is things like items which give xp bonus for a time etc. Not sure how ARR is going to address it but it seems Free Companies are going to be more than just chat channels with housing.

There's a rather intense discussion of FC, taxes and RMT's on the SE forums. I am clueless about it all. Never played WOW no the concept is rather foreign.
Edited to say, I think I mixed up Free Company with Grand Company.
I may just steer clear of this until I hit endgame stuff.

I did join (FC) , or rather was auto-invited to one. There was a LOT of drama, arguing about leadership roles and ranking, none of which I understood, so I left.

It's why you should make thorough consideration as to who you join. Unlike XI's linkshells, you can only commit yourself to one guild/FC.

I consider Linkshells to be glorified chat rooms and FC's to be the actual guilds. I'm not sure what the features of a FC are or what have been announced, but I would expect the typical stuff like being able to set member ranks, set various permissions based on those ranks, have message of the day options, etc. Hopefully we'll get a FC bank. And if they really work on it, hopefully we get further options like scheduling events and such through them.

@Grandmomma you shouldn't join a FC on a whim. I would be especially wary of FC's that auto invite members or accept anyone asking to join. People are different have different goals and interests and personalities. Blind auto invites increase the odds of clashes a lot more than at least some research.

Also important to realize free companies aren't ''free'' to create. I believe it costs 15k to create one, and you must be level 25. Linkshells can be created for free as soon as you'd like.

That's good advice. I've found that guilds doing mass invites are almost universally awful.

As a rule when you're looking for a guild (or FC, or whatever term you want), you're looking for a group of players with similar goals. Guilds are usually used for organized gameplay, whether that means endgame content, or leveling content, or pvp, or coordinated knitting.

XIV actually has a small advantage in this area, because it also has linkshells. Linkshells can fill the role of a purely social environment just fine. And in fact, that's exactly what they're for. FCs are a bit more directed at gameplay goals.

Yea those are zerg FC with no rule all anarchy. The ones you want are the ones who won't just invited every tom, ****, or harry. I grouped with 3 people who were in the same FC and they knew each other for years, was friendly and we had a good dungeon run. At the end one of them gave me their website and said to me "We all really worked well together if you feel interested here is the site and sign up. Even if you don't want to join keep in touch b.c we had a good time." Those are the good FCs people that have been together for a while, not the zerg FC that tried to get you to join.

Good advice. I'll just check here for the FC's that Zam has and decide at some point. thanks.

Thanks, I'll take it slow and go with Zam suggested FC's. Will be on the Ultros Server again, and hopefully there will develop a nice FC from that.

I can see I've got a lot to learn. With FFXI I was in several LS Sky, Sea and beyond for end game runs.
