PS3 Graphics Follow

#1 Aug 11 2013 at 10:14 AM Rating: Good
Hello all.

Been looking through all the videos of FFXIV recently and notice the PS3 screens look alot more "dulled" down compared to the PC version. Obviously the PC will outperform the PS3 in many aspects but I'm worried it's just going to affect how I feel about the game itself. What do you think?
And I know graphics are not everything but it sure helps to create a wonderful game.

In my opinion, if I was using a PS3 over PC, I wouldn't care, I would get used to it. People did the same thing with PC vs PS2 for FFXI...(I know this because I played on PS2 for the majority of my FFXI career.) It doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the game to most people, as a lot of people did play on PS2. I'm looking forward to how the PS4 will look, though...

I know this will shock people, but I actually think the PS3 version not as good looking as the PC version (There, I said something negative about the game Smiley: tongue).

I played both versions in the last beta phase, and the PS3 version was OK, but if you have a choice between the two, I would say go with PC. Not saying the PS3 version is unplayable, it's a good alternative if you're not a PC gamer or you want to kick back on your couch and play (I have spent a lot of time and money on my desk set up so I prefer my desk anyway).

However, when I was playing on the PS3 I was sitting at my desk and had the PS3 hooked up to one of my monitors, so the screen was only about 1.5' away from me, I daresay it probably looks better when the screen isn't so close.

You played the PS3 from your desk through your monitor? That seems a tad silly. Smiley: lol

It's expected it won't look as good... PCs are a lot more suited for optimal settings than a console. But you knew that already. The thing is the PS3 is better if you already own a PS3 and don't want to buy a new computer/upgrade your computer, the game is still available to you.

Why? it's pretty awesome to be able to play while I'm working Smiley: tongue

I'm not knocking PS3 players at all, but if I had a choice between the two it would be PC hands down.

I have a ps3 and played it. I just simply can't justify getting a pc to play the game. I don't have that kind of disposable cash.

I was satisfied with what I have. I was thinking of getting a better tv, but so far can't justify all the trouble and expense, since I have 2 pefectly working tv's.

Yeah, I think I'll stick with the PS3 I guess. Considering I'm getting the PS4 now I don't think I'll waste about £600 on a good PC just to play it. I'm guessing the PS4 will run it on max settings.

Buying a PC for one game really is a tough sell. I've always been a combination gamer, I have a fairly updated PC, and a current gen console (the last few generations have been Sony-based). I'll always play a game on a PC for the visual superiority, unless I know I have friends who are playing on the lesser option.

I've built computers for friends and family who were playing a specific game, and for them it ends up thing of the moment. Sometimes 3 months down the line when they burn out or return to consoles, that $1,000 PC goes relatively unused, reduced to a powerful Facebook checker (ZOMG Candy Crush is OP).

So decide where your money is better spent.

Before I played in beta phase 3, I was a bit nervous about the same things. When images of the PC and PS3 versions are shown side by side like in the Tour of Eorzea trailers, it does make the PS3 version seem a bit unpolished. However, once you get in and start playing, the PS3 version looks just fine.

The most important thing seems to be adjusting your TV settings. I played the Beta on two different TVs and the settings ended up being pretty different. I think the game even prompts you to adjust your TV settings before the opening trailer. Definitely worth playing around with it.

My only concern is that, in a few years, having the game on PS3 won't end up being a handicap. I still believe that PS2 limitations really held FFXI back.

I'm going to play on PS3, but I've seen what it looks like on PC, and it clearly looks better. It doesn't mean it doesn't look good on PS3 however. The game is still beautiful and (in my opinion) more importantly it runs very smoothly with no slowdown no matter what's going on around you.

I played it on both and the PS3 (at least on a 46" LCD TV through HDMI hook ups) looked as good as it did on my PC (32" HD using HDMI) when I had the settings set in the mid-range. Now when I raised the PC setting to high, there was a noticable differance, but before that there really wasn't any with the exception of the number of PCs and NPCs that were visible on the screen at one time... and that was mainly an issue during FATEs. As to the people who keep harping on the PS3 holding the PC back, I call BS. The PS3 runs the game at mid-range. If anything is "holding the game back" it is the low end PCs and if it gets the game a larger player base then that isn't a bad thing.

#13garethrogue, Posted: Aug 11 2013 at 1:04 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You'd have to have a PS6 or 7 to match the graphical, processing, RAM, and storage capacity of a PC. That's why I play my PC version on my big screen TV, with a wireless keyboard and controller. It's the console experience with the power of a PC.

Another thing to make note of is that if you have an option to turn off overscan, be sure to do so. Otherwise, you're going to have to spend a whole lot of time tweaking your user interface to make sure that everything fits on the screen.

I played on the PS3 during phase 3 and felt the graphics were decent enough. So long as you sit further away than Wint, you probably won't find too much to complain about. As princessary said, the biggest issue seems to be the limited number of characters that can appear onscreen. Then again, you might find that to be a good thing. After dealing with Jeuno in FFXI, I can see that limitation being handy.

I liked the graphics, but I am a fairly easy man to please. This comment comes from a person who would rather play SNES and PSX games than most high profile games nowadays.

The only time that the graphics bugged me is when there was a lalafell parade on Ultros during phase 3. I could only see like 10 lalas at a time, compared to the PC users being able to see a never ending line of lalas. Other than that , I have had no problems. I really have no choice as I don't have a PC, so maybe I am just forcing myself into liking it, but I doubt it. Again, I am a pretty easy man to please.

The PS4 will probably run it a bit higher than the PS3, but I don't think it will run it on maximum settings still. If it does, you will probably lag quite a bit. If you want the maximum settings with no lag, you need to invest into a computer.

PS3 is perfectly fine for playing the game, if you can't do the gamer PC right now just play on the PS3 and maybe some time later you can get a pc and run it.

No sweet.

I somewhat agree in that I feel that FFXI being on PS2 at all is what was holding it back. When you develop solely for PC you can expect people to upgrade and update over time; something you can't do when you back yourself into the console corner. I'm still a bit curious as to the reason SE decided so shortly after the announcement that FFXI had overtaken FFVII as the most lucrative FF game in the history of the franchise; why would you split your MMO player base....

There is a huge difference in graphics quality between PS3 and a good PC running on max.

I played for around 8 hours on each of PS3 and PC during the last beta. My PC was running at 1920x1080, max settings and the game looks amazing, textures are great (except the grass), details are awesome, colours are vibrant. The PS3 by comparison lacks detail, clarity and definition (though I was playing on a 42 inch TV), and suffers stutter and slow down on frame rates in the town - my PC showed virtually no slow down.

The colours on PS3 look bland also and not as many player characters load up in towns.

In fact, there was such a difference that I considered cancelling my PS3 pre-order (I already have on PC obviously) and waiting for PS4 release.

I will still get the game but all I will be doing on my PS3 is gathering and crafting when I want to just sit on the lounge and play.

I love this game, and I don't understand the negative comments about the graphics (which on PC are fantastic but you wouldnt think it reading the official forums) but I question the wisdom of releasing on PS3 with PS4 so imminent. The PS3 just does not cut it.

I suppose if you are used to only playing on PS3, you wont know any difference but for those moving back and forth, the difference is huge.

Yoshi told me in my interview with him that they intended to continually revamp the game's graphics to make sure it's always a competitor with other PC games. I took that to mean that there won't be any PS# limitations for ARR.

Then we can also take that to mean the PS3 will be left in the dust in terms of graphics? Gameplay rules supreme for me, but there are a lot of people out there who this might bother. Personally, I'd be happy if they decided not to tie PC down to the constraints of PS3 as they did in FFXI. I could think of more than a few reasons XI isn't as popular as it once was, but this one is toward the top of the list.

I take it to mean they will do the best they can with the PS3 hardware. If you're going to play on the PS3 I should think you are already making compromises and if you want the best graphics then PC should be your platform of choice.

As a PS3 only player I agree completely. It's just so much easier for me to justify the expense to buy a console every 6+ years than upgrading a PC all the time. I'm 99% sure I'll be picking up a PS 4. That will be my graphics/ram/storage upgrade for the '10s decade lol

I feel pretty much the same way. I can't see myself buying a new computer in order to play just one game. When my laptop finally dies, I'll grab one capable of running it. Until then, a console will have to do. As such, I'm fine with PC users having certain advantages over me.

Very true. You pay for what you get.

I'm relatively new to PC gaming, and I don't regret it one bit. Once you get the PC, as long as you care for it, and upgrade it every now and then, it will stay as a nice investment.
