Nice, this was a great read for me. I am a 1.0 player but I still enjoyed this. Thanks Wint.

Thanks Wint.

I was actually wondering, are those subclasses still required? I thought I had heard they got rid of that.

Since BLM can only cross-class ACN and ARC, I'm going to assume the information in the chart is wrong.

I don't think SE has announced anything about it either way. Hopefully, someone will data-mine the quests in P4 to eliminate any confusion prior to the official release.

There is a difference between the Classes you can select Cross-class abilities from for Advanced Jobs, and the Class you need at 15 to unlock the Advanced Job in the first place.

Wint, I'm curious where you heard about them doing away with the level 15 sub-class requirement? As confusing as the Class/Job system is at first glance, a bit of simplification would be welcome!

something ive wondered about the solo class quests/missions lets say i start off as pugilist.... you can switch classes as simply as changing weapons right? so I pick pugilist have a hand to hand weapon do my first solo class quest/mission go out and buy a polearm switch to polearm kill a few enemies outside then when i level Ill get to do the lancer class quests or will it keep me going forward with pugilists quest since that was my first pick?

Also i though a mage job was also a requirement to get monk?

The other thing i dindt get was you unlock a dungeon at level 15 but you cant enter or do it? why unlock something before i can actually use it? I mean so if i hit 15 and unlock a dungeon I cant party up and do it with my level 15 friend before meeting some other requirements first? What would those requirements be?

I think in ARR you have to first reach level 10, and then actually go to the Class's Guild and complete a quest to unlock new classes.

Simply changing weapons does not work to unlock a new class.

So in your case you will start in Ul'dah as a Pugilist, level up to Lvl 10, and then you will need to travel to Gridania to complete the Lancer Quest at the Lancer's Guild.

ok also according to the graph you posted subclasses for mnk/pug are LNC and MRD.. does that mean that pugilist can only use abilities cross class from lnc and mrd and NO other class? if so whats the highest level you can level a subclass before you cant cross class any of its abilities anymore?

i.,e as a Pugilist i know i need LNC at level 15 to unlock mnk but would leveling LNC to lets sy 20 benefit my Pugilist or Monk in any way that a level 15 LNC doesnt do? Also what level would I have to lvl MRD to get the full benefit of it?

Base classes can use Cross-class abilities from more available classes than Advanced Jobs can. See more below.

Just to break that chart down a bit further. The "Name" is the Job title. "Abbreviation" is the game-designated term for the job. "Base Class" is the "origin" class, the one that levels concurrently with the job e.g. Wearing a Bard job stone will make you a Bard, but level Archer at the same time. "Subclasses" are a little trickier.

At 50, a class gets 10 cross-class abilities, from any equippable versions. A job, however, gets 5 job-specific abilities (from the job quests), and 5 cross-class abilities from the 2 listed subclasses ONLY. To unlock the job in the first place (to pick up the quest that gives the job stone), one of these subclasses must also be level 15, in addition to the base class being 30. I can't recall which one it is now in 2.0 (since those leaks were nerfed by SE), but it isn't random, or a choice - the quest will always have the same requirements.

For a concrete example, let's say you have a 30 GLA. You can have up to 6 cross-class skills, maybe you have a mix of LNC, PGL & MRD stuff for damage + survivability. BUT you want to become a PLD. The quest tells you that you have to have a 15 CNJ as well. You run off to Gridinia, and level CNJ to 15, then return to the quest, picking it up. You bust some heads, hand the quest in, and get a shiny new job stone. You slap it on, you're now a 30 PLD - grats! You now also have a shiny new job ability for PLD. BUT, you only have 3 cross-class ability slots to add to it, AND they can only be CNJ or MRD abilities, as they are your subclasses. You run around for a little while, and ding to 32. You take your job stone off. You're now a 32 GLA, and all those restrictions to cross-class abilities have lifted

The recommended strategy is to focus on a Base Class at first. According to Yoshi-P, you will not really need an Advanced Job until very specific scenarios at End Game.

It doesn't make sense that THM have to level PUG to 15 in order for my THM to unlock BLM and then have ARC and ACN as subclasses.

It makes better sense in THM could either level ARC or ACN to level 15 in order to unlock BLM on the level 30 THM.

I agree. This is the source of confusion for many. We don't even have a term for the required lvl 15 class, as Sub-class is really something else (having to do with cross-class abilities for Advanced Jobs).

I hope Wint heard right and the secondary lvl 15 requirement is just out the window altogether.

This information is definitely useful. A good post for those that didn't know.

I gathered most of this information a while back by watching Mr. Happy's YouTube videos, though.

Yes, that is what I thought. I am paying closer attention now that I am more closely considering BLM as a play option (I have a feeling that I will need THM and maybe PGL to get Blue Mage eventually)

PGL was the required second class in 1.xx but I wouldn't be surprised if that will be updated for ARR. The list now seems to make a lot more sense for the jobs, although I'm a little surprised SMN and SCH both use CNJ and THM, I would've thought SCH would maybe take GLA for some of the defensive abilities instead of THM, and BLM would've taken CNJ now instead of ARC.

I haven't really poured over the abilities that can be cross classed so maybe it will make more sense after seeing that.
