Help build PC to run at max settingsFollow

– Maxing a game should be synonymous with 60 FPS.

– Hardware required to run max settings is dependent on the screen resolution you are playing on.

If you're concerned with visuals, one of the largest upgrades you can make to your playing experience is your monitor. 2560x1440 res is a major step up from 1920x1080, and it demands significantly more from your hardware. Always go with IPS display, stay away from that TN display junk. I use a 1440p Shimian (you can order them from South Korea for half the cost of the equivalent thing in the States) and a single HD 7970 GPU. Nvidia's 680 and 770 cards are roughly on par for a single card setup if you're on 1080p res, but the 7970 fairs a bit better at 1440p.

I'm also running with a Z77 Pro3 MB, i5 3570k CPU, 8GB Samsung RAM, and Crucial M4 SSD. All settings maxed, constant 60 FPS except in Ul'dah where it dipped to 50-55 in a very crowded beta 4.

I built my PC in January for about $950 including OS (took advantage of holiday sales). Monitor was $350. Zero complaints. Feel welcome to copy if you want the same experience.

What about if I wanted to run the game on moderate settings? I've never owned a PC and have only really played WoW on outdated Macs and FFXI (very briefly) on a crappy tv/PS2 set up. So I'm not really worried about graphics, just want it to run the game without worrying about overheating or having to upgrade a week later.

I'm leaning toward getting a PS3 to avoid buying a PC, but the latter option would allow me to play a bunch of games that I've missed out on (Rift, GW, WildStar when it comes out, etc. etc.). Should I just buy an Alienware bundle since I'm not trying to get max settings/performance?

You may want to get it for the PS3 then. Kind of a waste of money to spend $800 after all said and done on a pc when if you spent $200 more it could have actually given you a premium experience. When building a PC you pay for the biggest bang for the dollar, less than that is always a ripoff.

Minimum PC Worth Buying:
Core i5 3.3ghz or better ($300 w/ mobo)
8gB DDR3 (any speed) ($50)
660Ti (honestly minimum is really a 760gtx for another $50 its boss) ($200 or $250)
128GB SSD ($100)

There is very little fat to cut from this setup, and it would destroy the upcoming ps4.

hi, i would like feedback to my problem i think is weird. i just built a PC and have a i5 4670k with a gtx 770 and in town or well crowded areas i get 30-50 fps, other than that its constant 60+ but still i find it weird .

i even tried OC both and not getting much better fps, i have 16gb ram which is not the issue aswell.

You do not need a powerful PC at all to run at max settings. I have a 4 year old PC and I was still able to run FF14 on max.

Seconded. My PC is just short of the 4 year mark and while I did have the best GPU available at the time, it has no problems running XIV. There was one minor hiccup, but it was RAM related.

You have more computer than you need for almost anything else, FFXIV is no different. There's only so much performance you can get and you're pretty much maxed out.

You're running headfirst into a game engine limitation. Nothing you can do about that one.

I am contemplating upgrading my Gigabyte MB (I'll never buy a GB MB again) and Phenom 4 to an i7 Haswell ship and an Asus Sabretooth MB. I read somewhere (it may even have been Zam), that a high end i7 is a bit redundant for gaming - I'm wondering if I should get in i5?

The difference between i5 and i7 is hyper-threading, something that nearly no games make use of. This is the main reason why people don't bother with i7 unless they're going to use programs that will actually make it worth the extra money.

Can anyone confirm that a cooler billed to fit socket LGA1155/56 will work with LGA1150?

I have a Corsair H70 cooler which was out before the 1150 socket, but it seems it will fit - what I'm seeing is ambiguous though, I can't confirm it. Can anyone help?

You're more likely to get a quicker and more accurate response from the corsair forums. They're pretty good for feeding your inner geek too.

Don't know if you already got your answer, but any cooler that fits 1155 will also fit 1150. They have the same socket size/placement.

I'm in the same boat with an i5 4670k @ 4.2 Ghz and OC'ed HD7950. Large numbers of characters on screen bog the engine down more than anything else, in my experience.

Such is the nature of MMOs...

I can confirm this. The mounting holes have the same placement for the two socket types.
