Server congestion at launch?Follow

Or Early Access, how will people join their friends?

I have a few friends that want to join in the fun and want to start a new character on Excalibur with me. Are we going to see the same type of congestion that we did in P4, so much so, that people will be unable to join certain servers?

There has to be a limit but I want my friends to join me on the established server. So, how will they handle this issue? Has anyone seen a response on the congestion issue?

In FFXI they had the transfer ticket, where you could invite someone to transfer to your world. Are we going to see something like that? Does this make sense to you all? Something that I can buy to bring someone into my server, even if its full.

Its best if they get the game day one and try to come in but what if they can't for a few days, will the server fill up and we will all have to move?

Does that make sense?

Thanks.

Thats a very good question. I remember when I joined FFXI in 2005, my brothers gave me a World Pass (I think that was what it was called). It was an excellent way to ensure that I could join their world. I'd assume SE would be doing the same thing. I'm hoping so, because my brother made a character on a different server during P4 due to the login difficulties.

I thought world transfers would open up 3 weeks after launch. Not sure on how that will work, as I can't imagine this will include Legacy ==> Non-Legacy worlds. I guess we'll seeSmiley: grin

I would hope they dont throttle the worlds like they did in phase four. That was a debacle that only pisses customers off (Anyone remember RIFTS launch)

Well honestly you have to remember phase 4 was open beta.

Early access / full game is only for people who pay to play, so expect a huge decrease in numbers.

Yes but there is still the potential that there are that many people, just saying not trying to get in a war about numbers with people. If there is a restriction or maybe Excalibur got flooded with subs and its now full, how would that work?

@ RhuarcAllah: Yes, its is called a "World Pass." That's what I'm getting at. I hope they have something because there could be a lot of people being separated. Even more so on the Legacy servers where there is already a large population. On top of that, of course I'm going to convince my friend to join my legacy server as a new player and not start on his own and not be able to play with me.. and I'm not the only one who feels that way.. This does need to be addressed so we can decide how we will invite our friends in the future too.

There is always the potential. I'd suggest trying to at least create a character on the server you want as soon as servers go live.

Hopefully all they have to do is queue. Closing off servers and asking people to make chars on new servers doesn't work when there's already a bunch of communities already formed.

I think it'll be ok. I'm sure they will be monitoring it and be prepared if it gets to congested.

Even in open beta I had problems joining up with friends due to servers filling up so quickly, and it is frustrating to be put in a position of giving up your progress on your character to start over on a less populated server just so you can team up... or even connect at all.

But I'm not convinced a World Pass is a solution since it's not the number of accounts on a server so much as the maximum number of active connections being filled to capacity that's the problem. Even if you had the ability to invite someone to join your busy server, if there's never any room in the wait queue let alone to the server directly, it hasn't done you any good except make the invited character completely inaccessible.

It's only a matter of time before the hype dies down and capacity opens up. Surely, after a couple of weeks post-launch, playing on the server you want won't even be an issue (and if it's still an issue, Yoshi has clearly invented a substitute for crack). They will offer a transfer service down the road (though I think they might charge for it), so if waiting to start is not an option, you can always begin a character on a low population server and transfer when things die down. Anyone can transfer to a Legacy server, if that's the ultimate goal.

But stay informed, keep your options open, and let's all hope for the best!

I thought the characters and servers we picked in phase 4 is what we are stuck with until the world transfer which will cost money opens a few weeks after launch.

I always assume the worst, then you're never disappointed. Within 2-3 days, everything is normal.

The problem is that a lot of people had to settle for a random sever, just to play. My friend was one of them. He tried for 30-45min trying to get into Excalibur with no success. He and those other people will have to start over again on a new character if they want to get into the original server choice.

Secondly, FFXI never had a "que" system, is that normal practice for MMOs? If so, that's BullCrap. They are supposed to limit the number of accounts per server. Example: 4750 accounts per world. This means 4750 can log-in at one time but no more. There should never be a situation where 5000 accounts are registered to a server that only allows 4750 accounts to be logged in at one time. **You can have multiple characters on one account because you can only have one character logged in at a time. Dual boxing = more than one account.*

The above example is what appears to have been happening in P4. They allowed more accounts to register to a world that allowed less people to log in at any given time. There should NEVER be a que to get into a game, especially if you are paying $9.99/$12.99 a month to play.

If it was to many people logging in at once, understandable, that's one thing but if they over booked the servers, that is a little upsetting.

Anyway, I need a way to bring my friend to play with me because I'm not going to give up my Legacy Character for him, nor will I transfer later when I can... Excalibur is this sweetness.

The issue with beta 4 is that people were..... obsessed with it. They went without food or sleep in order to play for 48 hours straight in some cases.

Server capacity estimates are based around the idea that at any given time, 2/3 of your population won't be logged on. (Work, sleep, school.) So a server will allow 30,000 characters with the expectation than only 10K of them will be using the server. But if 20,000 of them ARE playing because they're being (insert stereotypical joke about basement dwellers here), then the server's active capacity is overloaded even if the maximum amount of characters have not been reached.

Exactly SE refuses to add a idle timer logout function so people can log in and leave it logged in forever if they wanted to.
