So that's right. IGN gets the exclusive right to broadcast early, basically giving them tons of views from people who want to see the game streamed, yet the fans who jammed the beta and earned SE a world record in the process get threatened with being banned if they dare to stream.

Good going, SE!

Monday is early access. Tuesday is official launch.

Someone on Twitter talked about streaming a day early, but NDA for video/streaming doesn't lift till Tuesday, basically meaning anything posted before then is grounds for being banned.

Edit:

I mean, FFS it's one goddamn day! I get it, you're sucking in IGN's engorged member SE, but **** man, no one cares! It's 1 2-hour stream that is offering prizes, it will get traffic. Let your fans actually share their passion!

I'm o.k. with it...but I understand the twitch/youtube accounts that make money off of viewership and being 12 hours behind in something like this will hurt their bottom line.

A Community Member will be at IGN giving out items if you tweet in during the broadcast. This isn't IGN doing this on their own. SE is going to be there with them. Please check your facts.

Hell it's not even for the money. It's just nasty. People are excited to share this game, and we've (mostly) held back. I so badly wanted to record footage from Beta 3, it was killing me not to. I just don't get why the NDA is even in effect any more.

The current price of tea in China is: £ 6.98

How, exactly. Shadow's post? Oh, you mean that SE is endorsing the stream and having a member of the community team there to give out prizes? Right... and how does that help anyone who actually planned on streaming themselves on Monday?

It doesn't. Hence the price of tea in China. It's not even relevant to this post.

It is relevant because SE is the only group that can post video footage until the 27th. Because a Community Member of SE is there with IGN, this is NO different than Yoshi's producer videos.

Wait, they're not going to allow people to stream the game live for early access? They really are trying to avoid any kind of hype for this game. I don't get it. There were several thousand people tuned in to see people stream screenshots for the open beta. When they realized that the game was in open beta and still under NDA, they got bored and left. You'd never guess where they went...

It's supposed to help people who want to stream on Monday? That seems like it's about as relevant as the price of tea in china as well. :)

This is no different than Yoshi-P videos as stated.

Oh, right, because SE has no access to anywhere they could stream themselves, I forgot.

Exactly. Imagine Twitch's or UStream's Now Broadcasting COATED in FFXIV players. It would be awesome publicity. But no, no. Do it, and get caught: Banned.

Basically, if you dare stream on Monday, a whole fracking day early, just like IGN, you get the ban hammer. Why? Because IGN. I don't get it. Let people stream. It's one bloody day, and there will already be a stream offering prizes just for watching it, run by a major gaming network (that not many people care about but whatever...). Let your fans have some fun! Let us take over every streaming site on early access so tons of eyes get on this game.

At the least, they get banned from Twitch. Several did while streaming during open beta. It still doesn't explain their apparent motivation to kill the hype though. Almost everyone I saw streaming(the legit ones with no video or audio of the game) gave up on it(some due to low views because of the A/V ban and some because of the 3102/90k errors) and are now streaming Hearthstone. Say what you want about that game, but I checked just now and in the 4 days it's been since then, it went from a couple thousand during peak time to more than 30k.

SE you updated your game to be more like other modern MMOs and I commend you for that, but how about your policies now?

They are worried it will be as bad as beta phase 4 and the risk of massive negative publicity outweighs the positive.

You should just stream old 1.0 footage and talk about how bad the game is..... Smiley: lol

The publicity they did get was grainy screenshots while people talked about how it was pretty much the same as WoW with better graphics and worse combat. The chat seemed excited about FFXIV overall because the streamers liked it so far and then 3102 hit. It peaked out around 5k viewers on the first day and fizzled out after the errors started popping up.

There are still people who are going to stream it without the audio or video, but most of the people who would watch don't actually have the game or they would be playing it. I don't see how watching someone on webcam describing FFXIV would get people excited. Most streamers spent most of their time explaining how the game was like some other game they might know of or answering questions about when it releases, what server they're going to be on, ect.

My caring level is minimal. This is being done under SE supervision and it's on IGN to gain more viewers. The average consumer isn't going to go to SE's websites like we do. The only way they'd notice is having it on a major site like IGN.

It's no different than a major torrent site, a movie company, or a rock band.

They want to have some control over the presentation. How can it be cast in the best light for first impressions? Filtered through a major broadcast or displayed across multiple users where they have no control, like a viral video? Will that user broadcast it while running 10 other apps in the background causing lag? With anonymity, the user has free reign to talk good or bad and their descriptions can range from bubbly to soul sucking rage. Perhaps SE is trying to alleviate a few bugs before global launch.

Will some people stream regardless of risk. Yeah.

And come the 27th, no matter what state the game is in. The truth will be seen. Negative or positive.

It's not hard, they have press contacts, and arguably, advertising it to every major site would have been better than selecting a single one.

OK, first, it's one, 2 hour broadcast on a single day. They aren't even doing multiple for multiple time zones. Second, the very next day everyone can stream, so right there they lose control. Third, they lost control of their PR the moment they did an open beta, where everyone and anyone could try and join in the open beta, then do a write-up with screenshots. Fourth, people are going to hate or love this game for reasons beyond any presenter's control. Look on here, we have a couple absolute morons saying the graphics are worse than 1995/2001 level of graphics. Forcing control of this through one outlet makes them look more like they do have something to hide.

And finally, SE is known for being draconian when it comes to dealing with its playerbase. They should have taken this opportunity to change that, and therefore show that they've fully modernized their product, rather than having the customer support lagging behind, again.

Edit:

And yea, it might seem petty of me to want it for those who can stream (RL issues are more important so I haven't been gaming much at all recently), but I just feel that it would be awesome to have live streams all over, getting people hyped for the game.
