Some are good, some are really boring or unnecessary.

Actually I find the vast majority of cutscenes in video games poorly written/produced and add little, if anything, to the actual game.
I chalk up the increased use of cutscenes and voice acting to development companies thinking they're some sort of indie art houses instead of game producers.
Occasionally decent voice acting will be done (like in Skyrim) but for the most part the story/writing appears to be done by some guy they found at the nearby Starbuck's who hangs out "writing" on his MacBook.
Homer Simpson once said "I like my beer cold, my TV loud and my homosexuals flaming"..
The corollary for games would be "I like my video produced by Hollywood, my writing done by authors and my games made by **game** developers"..
