Is it common place in all MMOs now to allow other players to also attack your mob? I come from FFXI and only FFXI so maybe my opinion is skewed?

FFXI is the only MMO i've played that locks the mob to the claimer. All other MMOs that I've played allow others to also attack your mob.

Why? The monster dies faster and everybody gets credit. What's the problem?

I never attack anyone else's mob as an act of good faith. I extended the same courtesy to people in FFXI. When the game first started, camps were highly competitive. Being a Dragoon, I was also a heavy soloer and it was an unspoken law among Dragoons, Beastmasters, and other soloers to share camps or work something out so one doesn't get in the other's way. I liked how the community worked because of that specific claim system as opposed to nearly every other MMO I've played where everyone just runs around and attacks everything. FFXI being the MMO I've played and enjoyed most, I've always tried to be as accommodating to others as I could be, and that carried over into the other MMOs I played, including FFXIV.

All that said, with the state the servers are currently in, I don't fault anybody for attacking my mobs. The servers are packed, and with such a difficult time even getting into the game, people probably don't have as much time to play as they'd like. Besides that, you never know when the servers are going to suddenly go down for emergency maintenance or you're just going to get randomly disconnected. So I understand completely if people feel the need to rush and take advantage of every kill possible to get things done.

You shouldn't, because you don't lose anything by having them attack your mob. It's win win for you, you still get full credit, and you spend less time and resources killing it.

I remember the horrors of expansion launch day 20 people trying to kill 10 mobs for 5 quest items that were a 25% drop rate. Trust me it's not fun to play a game like that when quests are your main source of xp.

Does this seem like a really stupid problem to have to anyone else, or is it just me?

Different places have different cultural nuances. In final fantasy 14 ARR it's considered polite to kill other people's mobs.

I see where you're coming from in thinking it's annoying, but that's the culture here.

Do you ever confront anyone in game?

In a real life situation, if someone barges in on whatever I'm doing uninvited, I find that intrusive and offensive. If I were in the gym and someone randomly came over and started helping me lift the weight, I'm not going to be happy because I used less resources lifting the weight and I now have less time to spend in the gym. I'm not getting the experience I need. Likewise, someone showing up and helping me kill a mob that is already easily soloable makes the game quite dull for me, and I don't care that I shaved off a few lousy minutes on the way to the level 50 finish line. So don't act like people are doing me favors.

Furthermore, it's just polite to ask. Do you want to party? Send me a tell. We can go hunt some bigger game so it's fun for both of us. Do you need mobs for a quest or a hunting log? Let me know. I'll move camp, or I'll join up and help if that's what you want. This is an online multiplayer game. I expect people to be as courteous as they would be in real life. Perhaps that is as courteous as they are in real life. As I've said, I'm already being understanding by taking into account the current state of the servers and not getting on people's case about it. So I don't think I'm being unreasonable.

I like when people jump in and help, especially after or during fates, when you are left with mobs that have agro.
