Is materia worth using at lower levels? I'm seeing gear with slots starting at around level 15 but honestly I feel I'd be getting newer better gear far too soon to bother with putting materia into it.

Is there a good level where its ok to meld materia into your gear? Many people I know say they wont bother until they get level 50 gear since it's pretty much a waste of time otherwise. Does that sound about right?

No i feel if it has slots it should be filled with materia, i started putting materia into my jewerly and armor at level 15, to me it helps im a gladiator and all the added parry and vit i added to my gear made dungeons pretty easy, i fought ifirt and he barely hurt me. I juat really enjoy crafting and materia melding i find it a fun part of the game, i know you can beat the main story with just quest gear and droped gear, plus pink droped gear is on par with HQ melded gear. For me i see no point in waiting till level 50 to add materia, for me i wanna use every item i can craft out in the battle feild insttead of just ruahing a crafting class to level 50, and if you start early you will have all the gear you need to turn into materia. Thats my two cents on materia.

What is the best way to acquire lower level materia? Craft it yourself? Purchase from NPC or other players?

Once you get lv 19 with a job the quest will open up at the Bon Fire (like suggested up above) to show you how to make materia and then a quest from the lady in same area will pop up but you will need to be in a DOH class to do the quest

Yes - once you are able to convert your own gear to materia, you will end up with a truckload of tier 1 materia, that *really* doesn't have much use for endgame stuff, where you are expecting to max out your gear. And while it isn't necessary to fully kit out your level 20 DPS to clear the content at that level, it is certainly always useful to have more stats. More stats = more boom!

In short, your tier 1 materia doesn't have any other use, and obtaining grade 1 carbonized matter is fairly simple (level 16 BTN/MNR). Might as well put it to use!

But you need someone to meld it into the item for you, unless you plan on leveling whatever craft is needed to meld it. Most of the people I've asked aren't high enough level.

if you check the board regularly you'll find materia sold super cheap.

Another things about adding gear to your low level materia is that you're likely to use that gear again. For example, a lot of the gear on my CNJ I'll be using for ACN & THM. So its worth it to have that gear already setup.

Level 1 and 2 materias and level 1 and 2 catalysts are super cheap on Cactuar's market. I've got all of my goldsmithable stuff equipped with materia myself, too. You've just gotta find some reliable crafters to do the synths to add the materia for you depending on what DoH job is required to do so for any given piece of gear.

At low levels I'm finding materia to be largely a waste of time. The issue isn't that you can't increase your stats, but that you can't increase the stats which matter. It seems every item has an upper limit to how much of a particular stat can be added, and low level gear seems to sit close to this cap. After being repeat attempts to attach mind materia to my various gear for Conjurer it was clear that none of my gear would benefit from it (getting a +0 bonus).

When melding gear, you have to consider the reduced effectiveness when adding it to stat-heavy equipment, and in the early levels where you're more likely to see +1 materia rather than anything higher, it doesn't seem worth the effort. Still, you can always pile on different stats if you're so inclined, just don't expect any significant impact.
