Hi. Not sure if anyone else is having a hard time on the last boss, but the party I ran with got wiped almost 7 times. Due to the dragons ridiculous weaponskill. The problem isn't the weaponskill itself. It's what happens before hand. The dragon will throw out poison pools and cover the floor, so you're pretty much on pins and needles trying to keep off the floor. He then lines you up like pool shot and smacks you with his poison breath which will do one of two things.

1. OHKO you. (Non Tanks)
2. Nearly OHKO you. (Tank)

Which then leaves the healer scrambling to keep up the heals. Does anyone have a game plan for this? I'm going to get my tank friend and tell him to hoarde Antidotes and see if that helps.

Any strategies/tips? :D I'm running as a 32 Scholar and I can keep up the heals UNTIL his poison hits, that's when I'm struggling. I've been playing a healer class since XI so I know what I'm doing....but at the same time I'm in tears because I'm watching my friends die. D: Should I push for 35 and just get Succor?

Run and gun my friend. That is your first taste. My advice is to zoom your camera all the way out so you can see the entire field. And just like driving and paying attention to both the road and the speed, you have to pay attention to the party members and the aoe on the floor. It gets more complex in later missions. And tell your people to do the same. It wil help them see the poison easier.

I haven't reached that far ahead but I always like to stay at max cap level for duty/battle.

As a 50 PLD I commonly queue for this dungeon looking for "Party In Progress" and join anything with progress 3/4, there are far too many tanks who are not ready for the responsibility here, and I feel bad for people getting stuckhere. And you should know it gets harder from here on out, I'm happy SQ ramps up difficulty.

Anyways the tactic you should use is:

Ranged your job is stay stand near the poison pools but not directly in them, and stand together, therefore keeping the poison pools isolated to one side of the dungeon. When you get shot at by poison don't find a nice new clean patch of ground, stand NEAR the poison, keep it contained.

Tank pulls it to the back wall, mages stand "together" on one side like above, if the dragon chooses to poison the tank or melee DPS, the tank pulls it along the other side of the wall. Pull it slowly, don't use up too much room, you just need to pull it sort of out of the poison, a bit of practice and you'll know how far to pull it. You wanna save as much space as possible.

I usually kill the boss by the time I pull it to the entrance, pulling it along the right side wall. If I do get to the entrance due to bad DPS, I just keep going along the wall and the mages keep rotating too.

Another tip, if you're the tank and you have bad latency or have a hard time dodging the dragon breath, try strafing (moving left and right) constantly while spamming your skills, you'll find that when he does the breath and you're already moving it's easier to just keep moving in that direction out of the way.

Also a plea to other tanks who can do this well, please queue for party in progress and help out any 3/4 progress on Brayflox, you'd be amazed I get a couple of these every hour and it's easy enough to tank a dragon for 10 mins, to help out the community.

Don't bring antidotes to this boss, he uses "Poison+1" which normal (or even HQ) antidotes can't cure.

None of the other alchemy-made potions seem to cure Poison+1, either. You have to tough it out, so this is kind of a Healer's Test / DPS race.

I heard that many players find constantly spinning around the boss as the tank is the easiest way to avoid his damage. I'm not a big fan of that tactic myself.

I've done this run a few times w/ my SCH and the most i've had to repeat this boss on any run was twice. As previously stated, run-and-gun if your a DPS. If your a TANK, this boss teaches you that one failed avoidance of a move can be the difference between victory and defeat. From a Healers stand point, the dragon is only tough if the DPS's and Tank don't hold up their ends. I usually try and keep Eos as close to the tank as possible and let her spam her own moves, this way all the buffs will always hit the tank. Then i just keep midway between the DPS's and TANK, this way i know i can hit either of them w/ cures. The biggest problem I have is if the tank runs one way and the DPS's run the opposite and someone usually ends up out of my cure range, and that is where placement of Eos is critical.

As a tank, I could not straight tank the boss and avoid its Dragon Breath due to the latency of that fight. What I tried and ended up working really well was to get enough hate to be able to hold it, smack it around a little, and then kite it around the battle field. The party members knew to stay behind it and damage it over time and there weren't any deaths.

Granted, this was after hearing stories of the party saying their tank just took the hit from dragon breath. When you're kiting, it's your responsibility to not bring it into the poison pools to heal it.

Also, run in and do some hate combos and flashes to keep control immediately following the end of every Dragon Breath.

What? Don't kite it, you can stand your ground, just move it out of the poison field, otherwise it becomes a giant mess.

And don't spin around the dragon, you may accidentally get someone else caught in the dragon breath, just strafe left and right, this becomes even more important by the time you get to Aurum Vale, those marlboros have a nasty AOE you really gotta be straffing sometimes if it gets messy.

I wouldn't suggest kiting the dragon.
However, if you have bad server latency like me I'd recommend going with a cast interrupting skill-- shield bash for me. Seemingly, Dragon's Breath was on a fixed interval for recast. So I basically timed it with my rotation of skills and would be prepared to shield bash around the time the dragon was about to cast Dragon Breath. I found this much easier than trying to flat-out avoid the breath.

Yep bash works, but like you said CD is an issue, a melee DPS can also do it, I still strafe constantly and dodge regardless "just in case"

I never thought to just queue up for parties in progress. I didn't have a problem with tanking this guy the first time around after one of the people I ran with told us the strategy.

I'll queue up more often so I can get more practice in tanking.

Yes please do so, it's also a nice 5k exp if they happen to be right at the 3/4 progress, you just run in and tank it and get the first-time completion sometimes too (8k exp).

Does anyone know what determines who the dragon will target with the poison pool? So far I've seen no rhyme or reason but, then again, it's a hectic fight so my attention is usually on the matter at hand.

I believe it's whoever is 2nd or 3rd on the hate list (not sure which or if it could be both).

This boss fight really relies on a smart tank. I did this with a WAR tank who was spot on with keeping it out of the green sauce and never took a single breath shot and kept the breath shots aimed away from the rest of us. Really, it's largely up to the tank to do a good job here.
#19 Sep 06 2013 at 7:45 PM Rating: Good
Perhaps my suggestion didn't come off as intended. I didn't literally kite it around the whole battlefield running around the perimeter. I never stood still. As long as you're not standing still just waiting for the damage circle to appear waiting for Dragon Breath, you will be fine. Just constantly move around, you can run under him or in a small circle, but every time I sat there and waited for the move to begin charging before strafing/moving/what have you, I always got hit, even when outside of the damage circle. It doesn't rely on a "smart" tank, sometimes the latency just can't be avoided.

Granted, I did this when the duty finder servers were bogged down, so maybe latency was more of an issue then than it was now, but the time we won with my above method, my party members never got hit by the breath, nor was it really aimed at them.

I killed him using the kite strategy with my friend. I had him trail the dragon around away from us. It worked and all his breathes missed except 2 which were at the very end.

Wait till you do sunken temple.

First mini-boss is generally considered the hardest mini-boss in the game.

On behalf of monks everywhere... please for the love of punching things, DON'T DO THAT.

I can't tell you how frustrating it is for a boss to be constantly changing orientation when you're trying to rapidly line up rear and flanking attacks, especially a boss as big as this one is.

If you're standing close enough to him, the breath weapon is not that difficult to move out of, and you have plenty of warning. Just pull him out of the poison and don't stand in it yourself. Then all he can do is body slam you, which gets you maybe a tick of poison before you just run out of it and get back in position.

As a monk myself, I've ended up tanking this boss a whole bunch of times when our tank went down, and I'm completely certain this can be done without ever getting hit by the breath weapon, and without having to do any kind of preemptive strafing to move out of it.

The single biggest problem people have with this fight, is the boss not being pulled out of the poison pools. Boss gets healed, fight takes longer than it needs to, healer eventually runs out of MP which causes other problems as they try to keep up with no resources. Solve that, and you're golden.

I've done this before and I didn't find it difficult at all. I even partied with random people from duty finder which I'm not too fond of, because usually I get paired with a bunch of nub nubs. Maybe I got lucky and got put into a good group?

It isn't a hard dungeon. The mechanics are all very simple and it hould go fine almost every time yet is does not - you got lucky. I'm not sure if it is because these kinds of moving/dodging mechanics are new to a lot of people who many have only played ffxi or not any MMOs, because SE's code/servers make dodging seem more awkward than in other games, or a bizarre combination of both and some other element but a lot of tanks seem to just not be able to do this. I did Qarn once and seem to have got lucky as we cleared it without a single wipe and only one death but after this boss I doubt I will ever DF it. Finding a good FC and/or LS is beginning to seem more and more important...
