So it has begun. The RMT spam.Follow

#1 Sep 07 2013 at 3:43 AM Rating: Decent
I noticed this before but very little. Just a shout or 2 per day with 1 on the banlist.
....
Today was a different story.
I zone into town and do not see a shout/yell every 10 mins or 1 mins, but a fill the chat box spam every few seconds.
I have already banned like 6 ppl with long weird names plus as i write this i have already received 3 /tell.

I hope SE fixes this spam thing or at least makes it a bit easier to right click add to banlist.

Yeah it's pretty bad on Excalibur. City chat is just wave after wave of gil seller spam.

The RMT spam is bad than on top of that there are players botting non stop. I know they have been at it for almost a week and there still in game when a lot of people have reported. Get rid of bots and they won't have the gil to sell..

SE should make a brand new server. Then every single account found to be spamming should be moved there and left alone. Let's see how long it would take them to figure it out.

All is quiet on the Ultros server. I think I have a total of four people on my black list.

What is a quick way to block the gilsellers? I thought /blist add <name> was supposed to work, but I keep getting an error.

There is no fast fix other than opening your social menu afaik right now. I know SE has said that they will add it too the right click menu.

I add shouts to the city of "You can Blacklist a person on your social menu - press O". It's a good way to help the newbs not get spammed.

..and its in standout orange color too. Seems like today it happened across different servers. Noticed it spammed differently than before.

You have to put quotes around a full name. Classic SE right?

If you get a tell, '/blist add <r>' works though.

/blist add "Spammer Name"

With quotes, not angle brackets. Apparently that command expects a string.

Those angle brackets are a tag, in my example's case 'r' being 'reply', or the last person to send you a tell. This is an FFXI syntax. There's also still <t> (target), <bt> (battle target, red name), and <st> (subtarget, handy secondary selector), but <r> is actually new(?) and kinda cool. They weren't implying the name be in angle brackets, but just that it appear there. What they were lacking was the quotes, which most tags add implicatively.

The only solution is for people to stop using the RMT traders.

So long as people keep paying them real money to be there...they will be here.

Tangentially related. I just wanted to take a moment to make sure you all are aware of the forum policy on RMT spammers. It's essentially this: "shoot on sight".

We don't allow selling of accounts, items, in game money, or anything tied to a game account for real money. Selling an in game sword for in game currancy? Thats fine. But anything that deals with RMT or pay powerleveling or anything of the sort, we ban, no exceptions, no appeals. That includes people posting blog links that are obvious fronts for gilspammers, etc.

So, if you see it anywhere here on the site, report it. You should also not ever see a gilseller banner ad anywhere on the site, though we have had an occasional one of those slip by in the past from the third party ad providers. if you see one, it isn't intentional, report it and we'll get it removed immidiatly.

We also continually add knwon RMT sites to the forum filters. If you ever see a <cannotlinkto> that isn't a specific example like that one was in an admin thread, its probably a spam attempt, and you'll want to report it.

I currently ban about 6 such gilspammers myself from this particular segment of the forum every day, which doesn't include the ones the other Admins kill before I get a chance. They are a plague, and removing them is one of the more satisfying and enjoyable aspects of the job. Anything we can do to help improve our response time to remove spammers is a good thing, so if you have any ideas along those lines, feel free to let us know!

THANK YOU! I try to avoid menus when I can and this was driving me crazy. And yes, very typical of SE to make you have to use parenthesis. lol! Kinda like how macro commands are case sensitive..

If you don't even want to type in the person's name, my friend made a macro for it: /blist add <r>

It will add to your black list the last person who sent a tell to you.

On Faerie, Ul'da seems to be the worst. I've haven't seen it so bad since a few ftp mmo's back in the day. It's disgusting to see, especially with all the little stars and hearts they put in the message in a vein attempt to personalize their spam. It cheapens the game.
I've set up a custom channel I switch to whenever I go back to town.

I went back to Ul'dah yesterday in Midgard and I swear there were 2 rmt competing against each other. It was the worst spam war I've personally been subjected to. I'm in the 'make blist easier' camp. It needs to be the last action when you click a player's name.

Twas pretty bad and continued on until this morning.

This thread has been pretty useful, though, with the shortcut text command to BLISt someone in two easy sequences.

I do wonder what the GMs are doing. The minute someone starts to do this, usually a few reports go out (they need to make this easier to find). A GM should probably be on the scene in ~10 minutes.

I think that since you have to be on someones friend list to send gil back and forth, SE should not only ban or move the gil-sellers themselves but also anyone who is or has been on their friends list. It would be akin to taking a network down from the inside out.

In fact, I'll take it even further. SE should leave the gil-sellers completely alone for the next month or two and THEN take everyone out. Like a spider waiting in its web.

I could be wrong, but it seems like a lot of the RMT spammers may be hacked accounts (basing this soley on the fact their names aren't random strings of letters like you used to see in XI). If that is the case, it would be horribly unfair to ban anyone who happened to be on this person's /flist prior to losing their account.
