WoW doesnt have those problems because there's a whole lot less communication between the player and the server as far as locations and actions go. FFXIV currently updates everything retardedly often, from movement accurate to single steps and milimeters even on the exact moment it happens, mostly due to the new red targeting grids it needs to calculate if it hits or misses. If you've ever played WoW, you should know characters there jump around like crazy on someone else's screen. Not from actual jumping, but more that the locations and movements dont get updated nearly as much. It's not all that important there anyhow to know exactly where someone is standing during combat.
So since there's less back-and-forth between the server on WoW, they can host a whole lot more people without problems. FFXIV on the other hand sends every little thing to the server, and due to that overload of communication cant really manage more than 5000 people without giving us some problems. Even with the new caps, the latency and stuttering (server-wise not graphic wise) is slowly increasing and influencing the game's quality.
I liked WoW, dont get me wrong. I just absolutely hated the immature community. I actually hope FFXIV stays small and DOESNT sap people away from WoW or similar games...
