To craft or not to craft?Follow

#1 Sep 09 2013 at 4:10 PM Rating: Decent
That is the question. For me at least.

Normally I enjoy crafting, but crafting in FF14 seems like a much bigger time sink than in other games.

Is crafting profitable? Tedious? Is it worth the time or should I just level my other classes and make my gil the old fashioned way?

For me its been very profitable, but tremendously time consuming. The average tradecraft levee yields about 220% of the material costs. On the marketboards you can make anywhere between 0/1000% profit, but dont count on it. The money you save by customizing, and adding materia makes crafting very profitable all on its own.

It's like a mini game, it's more strategic. Only true way you'll know is to give it a try

If you can see it through to the end, and after a couple of factors, it's worth it.

1. You won't see a large profit margin at the moment with the exception of the high-end, level 50 gear or craftable consumables. That's due to obvious reasons, such as everyone powerleveling their crafts at the moment. You will still be able to eke out a profit provided you farm your own materials or utilize the leves which grant triple rewards.

2. The market needs a little more stability before low to mid-level items start becoming profitable again. One reason is as listed in #1, the other is SE needs to implement something such as tax-locks, where once you set the price it's done for the tax deduction so that we can reduce some of the insane undercutting happening at the moment. Making sure items expire from a set time when they were put up for sale would help as well, not constantly renew when a new item's put up. I digress....

3. The increase in cost, or removal, of camp-purchased items. Right now, you can buy almost anything that's not given to you as a quest reward for cheaper than a crafter can make it. If you do take up a craft, always try to HQ, and sell that. The rest keep for yourself to spiritbond.

Take up one or two crafts and test them out, it's really fun and not the nutso grind like XI was!

Because you are apparently forbidden to sell anything you get to others players who craft (and put gil into economy) and you somehow that is forced and fun when in reality is neither.

This is a huge debate and part of an ongoing thread over on the official forums at the moment. Many people are raising holy hell about the cost of repairs at 50, and something will have to be done, or there won't be anyone but a handful of players left with any gil in six months. Simple fact is what many are now discovering (and what 1.0 players saw in the first week), more money is going out than coming in.

#8REDACTED, Posted: Sep 09 2013 at 7:22 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Selling to crafters via AH is just another gil sink due to taxes. I love the way the white knights have clung to this crafting idea as if it is an acceptable or valid solution to the lack of gil fountains. Do the math, there is a 66 page thread of people who've done it and the numbers don't add up. What is everyone missing that you aren't?

e.g. do you really think there will be enough crafters doing leves to sustain everyone who prefers combat and doesn't want to make underwear and chop wood? What are they supposed to do, quit, go play something else and take their subscription money with them?

And? That 66 pages thread is 6 days old. There's another 21 pages thread that is less than 1 day old saying the opposite. Do the math, people have done it and the numbers do add up. What is everyone missing that YOU aren't? Oh Em Gee, because some (yes, some, 66 pages whooping threads, 660+ post, even at 1 person per post that's barely a very small fraction of 320k+ concurrent users we are seeing hammering the servers) think it's bad, everyone else need to follow suit. Oh yes, the economy is draining of gil yet people claiming to buy them at cheap gil/real money rate to sustain themself. I wonder where does that gil come from... bots don't do quest, they rather do something else that can be automated.

In 1.0, lvl 50 leve gives 4-5k gil which is now the equivalent of 400-500 gil Battleleves give. It was giving a lot more in the first few months from 1.0 launch but was quickly patched up. You don't get 100k gil per leve in 1.0 unless you do 30+ other leves for faction points to exchange for certain faction leves. And yet, 1.0 gil was inflated so much.

Does crafting in this game have "bind on pickup" type items that only the crafter can use/equip?

If so, are those items comparable/better than quest/dropped items?

Crafting (and gathering) types are actual classes, with their own gear, hot bars, and skills.

To make high quality stuff you need to use your skills while crafting. After you make an item once you can quick synthesis it, which is like normal mmorpg type set and forget spam crafting.

Yes you can make a ton of GIL crafting if you know the markets, same for gathering.
Will you benefit from crafting? Well it really depends on if you plan to level alternate classes and jobs and depends what craft you take (you can do it all)

Will crafted gear compete with raid gear? Too early to tell.
If you don't like crafting, or gathering, farming dungeons and raids at endgame might become rough since GIL doesn't get any easier to make, and you start to get really expensive repair bills, teleporting starts to really add up as well.

You could also farm fates for seals to buy gear from your GC vendor...

I would suggest picking up at least one gathering or crafting...just so you have stuff you can sell for some GIL

For debates like these it's best to keep in mind the following formula:

(Random Person) + (Internet) = (Seasoned Economist)

I don't mean to be too pedantic, but you forgot to add " Smiley: rolleyes " at the end there, Kirby.

Thanks for the tips.

I'm starting to think I'd really rather play other classes than spend that much time crafting. (it's really the gathering I'm not that interested in leveling.) Still though, crafting is interesting. Maybe I'll try later.
