Are Gladiators the only tanking class?Follow

I really enjoy tanking and am pretty good at it. I'm running a Gladiator (right now at 21), but the intention is to play with my wife on that class, so I'm looking for another class to level without her so that we don't get so far apart that we can't play together.

I've got a lancer at 18 and a Thaumaturge at 16, both fun but not as engaging for me. Any suggestion?

To elaborate, a GLA/PLD Tank using damage mitigation techniques, whereas a MRD/WAR use damage absorption. That's why a level 50 WAR has an insane HP total! Both can be effective tanks, but the general consensus seems to favour the GLA/PLD as a solo tank, and MRD/WAR as a crowd control tank.

I wouldnt say this is entirely true, although this is how alot of people base their group off.

War is just as good as a Pld solo tanking due to being able to use alot of self heals for large chunks of Hp, which makes up for the slight extra damage taken.

Overall, both are great tanks and can use either for every situation i have come up against, thus far.

Thanks all for the info!

So it's by virtue of heavy armor then?

How do I pull enmity off a group member that got a little aggressive? I can use provoke as cross class ability, but is there something alng the same lines for a marauder?

Provoke is a cross class ability, Overpower is good for getting mobs attention. If we were still playing 1.0 I'd point you in the direction of Warby's excellent Marauder guide, but we're not, and he's not made one (that I know of) for 2.0.

Yes, this pretty well describes the situation. In my humble opinion (as a main PLD, btw), there is
zero difference in effectiveness between MRD and PLD, be it boss or group mobs. The notion that
MRDs/WARs are sponge tanks stems from the inability of sword & board traditionalists to accept
the notion that you do not need a shield to shield your party.

The common argument assumes that PLD must be the better boss tank, because one of its stances
makes it take 20% less damage. Arguably, however, this line of thought does not take into consideration
the whole picture: only MRDs have access to the (incredibly, incredibly powerful!) haymaker counter,
which, at least for 20 seconds every minute (because of resistance buildups), reduces a bosses *overall*
damage output (that is, including AOEs affecting the whole group!) by 20%.

Perhaps you can tell I am absolutely envious by now. If not for my strange shield fetish, I would have
gone MRD for that skill alone. Also, MRD feels a little more "action-oriented", and thus may demand
(once again, personal opinion here) more skill and attention from the player, because it not only requires
you to focus on the survival of your group, but also on exact timing of your skills in order to recover the
maximum amount of damage taken with the respective skills (like, e.g., bloodbath). So if you feel up to
the task and want to literally revel in the intestines of your enemies - go MRD/WAR. If you expect to deal
with a lot of bonehead group leaders or want to be the traditional "immobile rock" tank, go PLD/GLA.

From conversations I have listened to in dungeons, it appears that the ability to hold hate from multiple targets is easier with WAR's aoe

MAR/WAR has the ability to use other class AoE abilities such as Flash too for enmity. I'd have to look, but I'm almost certain that GLD can't use most or any of MAR's class AOE abilities.

In my experience, one of our LS mates always tanks for us and according to him GLA isnt as good at getting hate as MRD. We're at 35 and there's a noticable difference in his ability to hold hate as GLA. Now maybe he just favors MRD, maybe GLA gets better in the later levels, I dont know. But I can pull hate off him any time he goes GLA but never can when he goes MRD, and I'm a THM.
