Right now though, it's just another modern MMORPG with forgettable and trivial leveling content where the game starts at endgame and is nothing but instanced dungeon raids for better ilvl stats. There's dozens of MMORPGs like that on the market right now, I have no interest in adding yet another one to my library.

Hey, you're like me! I never understood the argument that only a certain kind of MMORPG can be successful in the modern market, since making a "modern" MMORPG only gives players one more choice out of the droves of others -- others which always seem to fall short of their grand designs.

I'm not subscribing, either, but I'm going to keep a close eye on the game. Perhaps, after a few large-scale patches, there will be enough varied and long-term content to justify the time. As it is now, though, I know exactly what to expect, and I know that I could play (and have played) auto-group instance-runner a dozen other places.

I feel like some need to accept that an MMO can be successful without someone personally wanting to play it, either. WoW's art style grates the bejeezus out of me, but I can understand its done things for the better and worse of the genre. And while I always pressure devs who insist on a monthly fee to pump out updates aggressively, I'm not so unhealthily attached to any of my avatars or MMO friends that playing another game for a month or three while waiting for a good content patch is anathema or some sign of lacking loyalty. If anything, it's blind loyalty that gets people in trouble with MMOs because they simply think something will be fixed, an uber-patch will come as long as they keep subbing, or that their game did X better when it's fundamentally the same in another game with their own coat of paint.

You and me both!

In addition to being flat-out fun, this game is incredibly friendly for multiplayer. My wife is playing this with me, and last night we did her first dungeon together. She played on her laptop, while I played on the PS3 (I usually play on my gaming rig in the man cave). Thanks to the duty finder, I was able to mine for iron ores while she updated her client and got logged in. With virtually no waiting, we queued up and were off on the dungeon run. I let the party know it was my first time healing, and that it was my wife's first dungeon, and off we went!

During the run, we each gained a level, and the wife got a couple cool gear pieces for her archer. Then, the game dropped us off again in our respective locations, and I went back to mining for awhile before going to bed.

In the olden days of FFXI, this night would have been:

1) Me logging in and running to the dungeon.
2) Me waiting for 20 minutes
3) Dungeon run
4) I'm now stranded in the middle of nowhere, and I need to spend time/resources getting back to where I was!

So, yeah... this game is VERY social friendly. The community is very talkative and helpful, and finding linkshells and FCs is easy. You can talk in dungeon runs, too... you just can't be afraid to initiate conversation. That's exactly how FFXI used to be, too.

It seems as if you are simplifying facts to suit your hypothesis a little bit here.

you lost me right at the part where you said you played 1.0 but not 2.0...mostly because 2.0 has just about everything 1.0 had, plus heaps of content. A lot of that content necessitates a group, as well. What were the non-gimmicky mechanics in 1.0? Am confused. Do you want your bosses to just be tank and spank?

I mean, the game shares some pretty obvious similarities with the modern themepark model, I'll give you that. But it still retains the good stuff from 1.0, only now its actually playable. Sure, I'd like to see more open world party-based content. I feel like that's a big part of what you feel is lacking here, and I'll share that criticism.

Ultimately, I fall closer to what I think your stance is when it comes to good MMO design, but I'm still really enjoying this game. I think of it as a Final Fantasy game first, and an MMO second. Maybe that's why I'm having so much fun with it. I honestly think it would be worth 50$ just to play the main storyline and nothing else.

I think it will last for more than 12 months (almost every mmo is still running no matter how few players they seem to sink to), the quality of content is usually toned down once they see the actual numbers of players on the servers though. Content is directly linked to number of players. Then again ARR already had the quality toned down though, as can be seen in the lack of voice acting in most of the game compared to original launch, low number of servers and unwillingness to add more than the bare minimum also says quite a lot about how the company views the game.

Expansions and content is linked to number of players so we will have to see how the game fairs given time, it's surely not everyones cup of tea. Nothing wrong with being a niche title, as long as that niche isn't too small to support a large dev team or publish expansions that might not have very good sales.

None of us really know how it will go but given that almost every single mmo launched since WoW has flat out failed and most gone free to play it's hard to see what this game has that will make this game any different. I certainly can't see anything that is a difference maker in that regard here.

Yeah I know it was a very long a tedious process. The game was design in a different era. When it was released it was fun, I've met good people but then things just went south. Joined a LS, got sky, I never did limbus etc. I actually got sea solo with the level increase. It was like another job. I was in this one LS and I was leveling a job in CN and the leader of the LS was like we have sky now, everyone drop what you doing and head to sky. He would get angry even though there was ample people already there. So I joined a social LS and I just took it easy. Quit a few times. Came back when Aby was released then quit now for good. I felt like it was alot of work for gears that don't make sense. A freaking EP can kill you...man im so done with that game.

What is this about theme park mmos not being successful? I can think of quite a few that are highly profitable and will probably continue to be for years to come. Wow level of success? No. Profitable? Thriving? Absolutely. Dcuo is my prime example of a 'failing' mmo that has constant updates and a publisher laughing all the way to the bank. How many expansions has lotro had? Isn't one about to be released at near full retail price? Shall I go on? By what metrics are these games failures. Many of them are profitable with thriving communities. I have much more to say on this topic but I have to go so ill just leave it at that

**** i hope most of the people leave, NOT like a huge amount but for the people who (i know cliche) didn't grow up playing FF series won't appreciate the depth this game is starting to dig into, which to me i did not get to fully play 11 because i got to the game way to late as my parents hated monthly payments on games. but i will say they are making strides in 14 and for the people who do not think it will last a year, then you aren't playing it right, I've made multiple friends on my server and have had an excellent time raiding with strangers ive never met before and learned a lot from, just shut up play the game if you like it, and wait patiently. it gonna get better always, **** i mean comon they finally started adding "NM" style fates like Odin, give it time, it will flourish.

I tried WoW once a few years ago after it had a few years to build content. I was end-game raiding within a month with a full-time job. That game seems to still be running strong.

And to people comparing the progression to FFXI, you shuoldn't be using FFXI as your standard, because it was simply not a standard MMO in those terms. I think LOTRO is one of the more polished and balanced MMOs I have played and I think levelling 1-50 doesn't take considerably longer than FFXIV does now in its infancy.

I don't know, in my eyes (and I'd like to think the eyes of most gamers that actually had them open), that would be the exact definition of failure. A publisher beaming with pride on the way to the bank? I'll give you success on that one.

People these days tend to think that a game that started sub based going F2P is some sort of a failure. I don't understand it. I wonder if F2P games switching to sub based models would be seen as successful.

Indeed.. I just read an article that had Rift's revenue at 300% after its free-to-play conversion.

And actually, there's an MMO trying to convert the other way. Allods Online is a f2p game that's switching to a sub model. It's a first, we'll see how it goes.

I don't know....a lot of people in my free company came from other MMO's like WoW, FFXI, and SWTOR and are already getting bored of the game. I'm kind of getting bored of it as well now that I've been grinding the same few dungeons over and over and over at 50. The journey and story was fun but the end game is just awful. The materia system is even more dumb. I either have to level up a trade class or find somebody with that trade to meld on materia for me. It just makes the game more cumbersome and have to run around trying to find somebody to meld stuff either by tell (a lot of people just ignore you) or spam the chat with your shouts which usually gets overlooked because of all the gold seller spammers. Also there's a lot of noob tanks that doesn't know the basics of holding aggro even at 50 thanks to fate grinds.

The word is trial. T R I A L. It is pronounced "try-ul" and is phonetically different from "trail" which is pronounced "tray-ul" if you're in the south and rhymes with stale everywhere else.

Please stop calling it a "free trail" before I shoot myself.

#74REDACTED, Posted: Sep 14 2013 at 6:26 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I'd suggest that many of you hardcore anti F2P players wise up and get with the program, this game will be forced to go free to play same as all the others and the harder you rail against it the worse it will hit you when it does happen. It is going to happen because this game has nothing that will change the pattern every other mmo has gone through, new mmos come out too fast, leveling is incredibly fast and easy to cap out and endgame gets boring fast (dat grind). It will be impossible to add content faster than it can be cleared because of the audience they are trying to aim at, if they make it too grindy to make content last longer (XI tactic) they lose the casuals they wanted to attract anyway. Lose lose.
#75 Sep 14 2013 at 8:05 AM Rating: Excellent
Free to play did exist in virtual worlds. They got away with it because the worlds were pretty sh*tty and largely driven by user created content. (For example, Cybertown.) Other worlds had cash shops long before it was cool, such as Dreamscape.

Stop making sh*t up. FFXI charged a sub fee because, like Everquest, SE intended to keep a dedicated support team on hand wanted to be able to pay those folks salaries.

I can't think of a game that didn't go downhill as a result of going F2P.
