The Climb From 40 to 50 QuestionsFollow

#1 Sep 12 2013 at 11:57 PM Rating: Decent
Just a few questions, I don't want to progress any further until I really hit 45. That's when my AF Quest opens up I do believe. My question is, do I need to be in the story past a certain point to get it or do they just open up like Job Quest do upon hitting certain levels, because I'm not sure if I could go get my AF gear, then roll back and do my story missions with it to make the task that much easier. I don't feel like having to fight Garuda in what I am in. Here's what I am.

Level 42 SCH. I'm up to the quest Representing The Representative and I want to push for 45 tonight as my goal marker. People are saying FATEs are the way to go. Now my problem is, I am trying to keep up with FATEs as they spawn in, but I get no luck and end up with 900-1k Exp at the end of it.

Here's a plethora of questions for those who wish to answer.

-Do FATE's give experience based on level only?
-When Level Sync'd does the FATE give exp that's appropriate to your current un-synced level?
-What is the point of a FATE party exactly? Does getting experience come easier?
-Where are some Locations besides Dragonhead to farm FATEs from 40-45 then from 45-50?

-Do FATE's give experience based on level only?
Yes, based around the FATE level.

-When Level Sync'd does the FATE give exp that's appropriate to your current un-synced level?
No, see above.

-What is the point of a FATE party exactly? Does getting experience come easier?
Yes, quick, fast, easy and mindless EXP.

-Where are some Locations besides Dragonhead to farm FATEs from 40-45 then from 45-50?
Camp Bluefog for 40-45, Mor Dhona's Saint Coinach's Find for 45-50.

Blackbrush Station, north of Ul'dah. Then just move north from there to Northern Thanalan and you hit Camp Bluefog right off the start.

Are there any non story line quests available at 40+?

I've checked all the level appropriate areas for FATEs and have not found a single one (other than Levemets).

Are all quests 40+ opened via the main story line or is the expectation that you will do FATE, instance and kill grinding?

you get your AF gear from job quests. story has no impact on this\

quests open up as you do story quests. this has been said over and over and over...if your not doing story quests, quests dont become active

the answer to everything is just do your story quests

What he said, The reason for this, is because a lot of the side quests in the area tie in and add flavor to a certain story quest in the area. They wanna make sure you have done the appropriate story quest before allowing you to do a side quest that would throw the timeline out of whack.

Thanks - I was afraid that was the answer but I guess there's no choice but to put on the hard hat and go back down into the Story Line coal mine :)

This is the one time I wish I had a young kid around the house still...

You don't wanna skip the story on this. Trust me. It's not your average MMO fare.

Join a FATE party and you'll do better on XP. Solo its near impossible to get credit, much less even barely tag a few mobs once before they die, if you don't have high damage or AOE.

I've done well going solo with them for the most part. I've joined a few of the parties and maybe that helped at times. I haven't felt that I "needed" to join a party though.

I know this is heresy but this is my first FF experience so I;m not invested with the lore like a lot of people are.

For me I can only compare it to the writing/story of other computer games, which I generally find mediocre at best.

I can appreciate the love people have for the lore but for those of us that can;t get into that aspect of the game the "on the rails" aspect of the story line is kind of a downer.

I don't understand why they give so low exp for killing a mob 1 on 1, what is the reason when everything else is so easy, it would take forever to grind a level and im trying to skip as many quests so i will have them when i go back to lvl Blm.

The thing is, the "lore" in XIV is unique to XIV. The only thing the story is related to is the 1.0 version of the game, which few people played. All previous 13+ final fantasy games occurred in their own separate universes, with little overlap. While monsters and some characters are re-occuring, they are more like cameos in each new game than anything else. Take Cid - the Cid of XIV is not the same as the Cid of XI, the Cid of X, the Cid of VII, or the Cid of III where he was introduced twenty years ago. The character requirement for Cid is that he be a middle aged guy who messes around with airships. That's the extent of his cross universe lore. In X he was Rikku's father and the leader of the Al Bhed. In XI he was the head engineer of Bastok.

(Actually, I think giving him that epic beard between version 1.0 and ARR was a means of bringing him better into alignment with the standard Cid archetype. 1.0 Cid was too young and good looking.)

So if you're skipping the story content because you feel it has no meaning for you, you're doing yourself a disservice. The narrative of ARR is completely unique.

Actually, Cid was first introduced in FF2. And they retroactively mention him in the first FF in the modern re-releases of the game just so he could be in every single one. There's a fascinating article on everything you need to know about Cid right here:

Even so I think the "flavor" and "style" of the FF lore in general makes the game far more enjoyable to those who are familiar with it.

It partly could be a cultural thing or just "stylistic" but I've never encountered an MMO that so heavily relied on lore before.

The possible exception was SWToR and Bioware gambled (incorrectly) that people would pay a subscription rate for "story" as content.

Fortunately FF14 is a vastly deeper/broader game and the one saving grace for appeal to "traditional" MMOers is that the main story line does not have to be repeated in order to play other classes (i.e. alts).

You guys are off-topic. But anyways. I just hit 45 early this morning, got my AF, beat Garuda over the head with a big bag of bird seed. (Her fight was easy.) so now I am wondering what to do for 45->50 Do I just do Darkhold until 50?

I'd stick to Northern Thanalan (Bluefog) personally. There may not be as many FATEs as Coerthas, but at least on Diabolos, they weren't steamrolled by the time you get to them. As well, there's a staged FATE in the eastern end of the zone where smart groups will farm the endlessly spawning minions until just before the timer ends. It's not uncommon to get 150k+ EXP for that FATE alone from the EXP chains. Also reason to party up. Just be warned, this chain will probably knock of 2/5 of your armor's durability or more, so expect to repair afterwards.

The "Go, Go, Gomeira" FATE can be rough if you don't have many people in the zone, though. Good tank and healer is pivotal, and under a certain HP% he gets mean. Nevermind the adds.

There a part in the quest line in Aleport at around 42-43 that takes you on the boat to "the forbidden isle". Can't remember the name at the moment but there are two FATE's on the island pretty close to each other. Typically there aren't a lot of people around either so you can cap out on EXP every time. Not sure if it's possible to go back to the location but it's definitely worth soaking up a bunch of fates while you're there, given my time again i'd probably try to push through to the next level there. The only catch is not having enough people to take down the "King" mob in one of the fates with fewer people.

You speak of the Isle of Umbra and it is possible to go back at any time. You simply needs speak with the ferry skipper again.

If you have friends who are around the level and willing, running Darkhold till 47 then Aurum Vale to 50 will both give you very nice gear as starter for lvl 50 and even enough Philosophy Tomestone to buy 2-3 pieces of Darklight after you finished Main Story.

Very good.

I think I might just do that tonight. Although, having just posted a honey hole on a public forum I don't expect it to be as quiet as it was yesterday...

Also, as others have eluded to, you should be spamming your highest level dungeon through the 40's for gear and EXP. Although the EXP reward for finishing dungeons isn't that great I find that I easily pick up 100K of normal EXP off monsters in a dungeon like Stone Vigil. There's also the drops for gear rewards, which you'll want to be accumulating.
