Kind of feel bad for Square-EnixFollow

Square-Enix are the undisputed masters of presentation. Their CGI intro movies are beyond spectacular-- FFXIV's being the best so far... yet this is what they put together to represent their game...

I don't watch TV but once in a blue moon. There's no telling how long this has been running. I just saw it today. I can kind of see where they were going with it. Louisoix is calling to arms the mighty adventurers to return to Eorzea after its brush with total annihilation. It probably looked really good on paper... but its really just... not good. I mean, the words "weak" and "underwhelming" come to mind. Props to whoever did Louisoix's makeup. They really made him look the way he is suppose to, but at the same time he also kind of looks like an Oompa Loompa or something. I actually feel somewhat embarrassed that I play "the game from that really lame commercial." People who don't play will be all like "Oh, is that the game where you run down into the hole and try to escape from reality in? Yeah..."

"Escape from reality, live the fantasy" it says. It almost sounds like they're deliberately advocating anti-social behavior.

I'd be pretty upset if I were the one who paid money to have this commercial produced, and furious to have to keep paying for its airtime.

Yeah the commercials pretty dumb, the limit break trailer or a gameplay video would've been way more effective.

I gotta agree. The reasoning they put behind it is they want people to be interested in the story, or the journey or something like that.. But I don't see why they couldn't showcase all of it in the trailer. They have before!

Personally, I liked the commercial for Japan better.

Makes you wonder why they didnt just do a simple CGI thing instead. I mean, they put in all the work to "morph" the people into the player characters at the end. Why not just do it entirely CGI... except for it being kinda... lame... :/

Have you got the feeling, that playing a char in a fantasyworld is reality? Then put your sword away dude... your neighbour isnt a morbol...

But what if they have extremely bad breath?!

As an aside, yesterday morning I'm in Northern Thanalan working on the last legs of the story quests when the 4-stage FATE starts up. I know how it works with how people like to grind the basic spawns in the first stage. I was 50, though, so EXP doesn't concern me and I just wanted some seals. Knowing everyone else tends to lose a minute or two to actually kill the lambs before the timer expires, I decide to take a few out so they get a bit more time to grind. This proceeds to occur. Senseless profanity warning.

Could understand once, especially if someone doesn't know how people tend to handle that FATE. I'd even let the f-bomb and being called an idiot slide. But when you go on to spam it, bluntly, I have no qualms GMing the guy at that point because if something like that sets him off, I can only imagine what kind of annoyance he'd be to others later. And for the record, I stopped when the bar was about 3/4 full and just stood there while others continued to grind the fodder.

Edit: And derp me for thinking this the 50 tank behavior thread. Wake up, Seri~

MMO companies do market research and came up with the idea that the best way to bring in "casual" players that don't play an mmo usually is to push the human aspect. I can't think of one mmo advert that went either fully rendered or lacked some kind of real life garbage in it.

That ad is pretty horrible to mmo players but who knows what impact it has with the audeince it was intended to appeal to.

This - I don't understand marketing, but I do understand that it makes of people lots of money.

Commercial offers no hint as to what type of game, what gameplay is like, highlights anything good about the actual game, and people have to watch the entire commercial before they even know its Final Fantasy.

Also minus points for depicting the player base as a diverse group of well groomed fit people when we all know it should be unshaven neckbeards. (I kid...or do I?)

But yeah if I were ever interested in watching TV again (been years since I cared about anything on TV) I would have certainly changed the channel about half a second into that commercial. Hell I don't even watch internet based commercials for when I do need to see something typically shown on TV such as game of thrones ect.

Make a commercial highlighting the game world, graphics, music, and game play. That is what will draw in people....

Hard to make video game commercials not awkward, but that was pretty bad. At least it was a commercial though, the original release never got advertised.

I think it's "so bad it's good" - at least it's getting the name out there. It's not as if it makes the gameplay look bad or anything (which would really be bad for the game). It's just a bad commercial.

But it's been running for several weeks now on several big channels. I don't know whether its more the commercial or ARR's presence on big gaming sites, but their marketing actually is working.

Honestly?

The target demographic for this game doesn't watch that much television.

Ads would be more effective on Netflix.

I have to disagree,

I think SE's "target audience" isn't the "legacy" FF fans but young and first time MMO players. And those players spend a LOT of time in front of a TV.

Many, many things I've seen so far reinforce that feeling for me: "on the rails" RPG console type gameplay, simplistic/easy to master game mechanics, protection from "accidents" (invisible walls), the number of "cutesy" NPC/charcter models (friendly to younger players) and on and on.

SE probably took a lesson on not relying on an IP/lore to drive a tier 1 MMO from Bioware and SWToR. You need broad based appeal and a product that is easily accessible to new/young players.

Wow what the hell was that.

Anyone remember that old PlayOnline promo video? It's pretty terrible but it's a major nostalgia bomb.

1.0 actually did have a commercial, but it was basically FMV footage. I distinctly recall some mithra backflipping onto a float in Ul'dah. But other than that, don't think there was gameplay, either.

No. No it's not. You don't understand marketing at all.

I think I'm the only person who gets the commercial. It's an MMORPG. Every player is actually a person. Maybe they could have shown all the girls and guys transforming as they run along into AF gear or something, but the concept is there. You guys need to chill out with the "they might judge me"-ism. You act like Lord of the Rings wasn't a massive hit or Harry Potter. Hell, even the Star Trek movies are doing well these days.

If the dudebros and guidettes won't like the presentation of a commercial for an MMORPG, do you really care that much?

I also see nothing wrong with the commercial. It is a visual depiction of why most of us play games of this genre.

I agree, I mean the target demo DOES watch tv... it's just that as a whole we consume way more digitally now. So instead of being in front of >cable tv<, we're behind a smartphone/tablet/pc/laptop or tv+console(+/- ps3/360/wii)
